Painted by John Constable in 1821, The Hay Wain is an iconic English landscape painting that will be featured in the 'Truth to Nature' exhibition at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition aims to explore the meaning of landscape art throughout history and its relevance in addressing issues such as climate crisis, colonialism, and migration. Alongside Constable's work, the exhibition will showcase historic and modern landscape art, as well as delve into his influence on 20th-century painting. Additionally, there will be events where artists such as Richard Long will discuss their work, with curatorial tours in July and August. 🇯🇲 Resilience 🇬🇧 An artwork by Sara Smith (@slow.stitch.life) featured in our new exhibition ‘Answering the call’ now available for all to view @glenside_museum “Appliqué, paint and hand stitch on a school shirt The brightly coloured top of the shirt represents Pat Rose’s early childhood in Jamaica 🇯🇲 I used Kantha stitching - a style of running stitch that allows for curves and swirls. Below this, I cut and slashed the fabric to symbolize Pat’s abrupt transition at the age of 10 when she moved to join her mother in the UK 🇬🇧 The squares and grids on the bottom half of the shirt represent the cold, urban landscape she found herself in. These squares are hand-painted fabric, appliqued and stitched over in straight lines. In between these grids, I have hand-embroidered quotes from Pat’s interview, expressing the difficulties she experienced in adjusting to life in Britain. Several lines of brightly coloured thread have been stitched down the piece to the bottom, suggesting Pat’s resilience, her determination to forge an amazing career as a social worker, and her Caribbean heritage.” 💬 Pat Rose’s story Pat’s mother left Jamaica ‘answering the call’ when Pat was two years old, leaving her behind to live with relatives until the age of 10. Reluctantly, boarding a plane alone, Pat flew to England to be met by a mother she no longer recognised, a new stepfather and siblings she didn’t know. They lived in Southmead, an urban, working class area of Bristol. Pat remembers thinking, “the houses all look the same, how will I know mine?” Adapting to school was difficult for Pat, who was not accepted among the children - “I always felt apart”. Pat moved to St Pauls at the age of 16 where she felt she had “come home”. She studied to become a social worker where she has forged a career working with the homeless, drug and alcohol groups and postnatal care for ethnic groups. She has recently been presented with an “All in the Mind” award.

Glenside Hospital Museum will be open from 10am this morning. It’s the perfect day to come and check out our fresh new exhibition! This tender artwork is by Sue Franco Hadlum and is even more striking when viewed in person 🤍 Inspired by the women she met whilst a student nurse on one of the long stay wards at Glenside Hospital @suefrancohadlum13 used the medium of glass to reflect their fragility and vulnerability.
