Self care is an overused word no doubt. But I choose to see it for what it serves for me. What do I need to turn up as the best mum, wife, friend and well…person? To be honest I need space to breathe and be just ‘me’. Yes, sometimes the feelings of guilt creep in. Why didn’t I join them at the cinema to watch migration for the second time? Should I use this free time to get things sorted for E’s birthday? But then I realise…if I don’t take that pause for myself no one else will impose it for me. We are raised to wait for permission to do something..old enough to drink, to drive, the right grades to study something…but then you’re an adult with a child…and POOF…no one is standing there saying ohhh yes, ‘well done Jenny you’ve done so well you deserve a break.’ 🤪 So my point is…if I don’t give myself the flowers, the internal praise, the solo times with a hot cup of coffee and a podcast…no one is going to tell me to. My overarching "why" for embracing change revolves around my little family now and the dreams we hold for our future. Yet, grief quietly fuels this motivation. Experiencing a miscarriage in 2022 shook me to the core. It's not just the event itself but the aftermath—the emotional turbulance, the physical changes, relentless hormonal imbalances, the shattering of faith in my body, and the daunting prospects moving forward. It feels like the loss that keeps taking. But from this loss emerges a drive to transform. Ironically, what changed me now propels me towards making changes for myself. Late last year, I took the leap with small changes, like swapping household cleaners for low-tox alternatives. This simple adjustment encouraged me to continue making more tiny changes in my life to prioritise my wellness. What stood out for me the most at that time was this feeling of gaining control over my body and what it consumes, especially after experiencing something so painfully beyond my control. Reclaiming agency over my body, treating it with kindness, and understanding its needs was powerful for me. Why 'On the Bright Side'? The name reminds me of husband and my favourite trait of his—his unwavering ability to find silver linings in every situation. In a world filled with toxicity of all kinds—whether in chemicals, relationships, or uncontrollable circumstances—we always have a choice, not always in the matter, but in how we navigate it. We can choose growth over stagnation. We can choose wellness for ourselves and our loved ones. We can choose to extract lessons from situation. We can choose to distance ourselves from what no longer serves us. We can choose to learn and grow through uncertainty. Though we can't evade all toxicity, we can control how we navigate it. April has been busy and stressful. From appointments, extracurricular activities, school, birthdays, to getting over colds, we’ve been nonstop. As I take a moment to REALLY sit down and reflect, I realize that my babies are truly my motivation. My son turned 5 this month, had surgery, started a new activity and handled every new experience like it was just another day! My daughter has been dealing with ear pain and seeing specialists and she too continues her day unbothered and content. Today was my graduation from Samford University's FNP program. When I signed on to start back to school, I understood the sacrifices I would have to make, even if I didn't fully grasp how much it would truly be. What I didn't anticipate were the sacrifices my family would make to get me here. The picking up slack in everyday life. The missed vacations and family time. The planning of life minute to minute to make things run. The mom and wife with the short fuse and emotional breakdowns. Every bit of this accomplishment is theirs, too. I was filled with so much emotion all day today, but searching for and seeing my family in the crowd of people after walking across that stage brought out the ugly cry. We did it, even if we felt battered and bruised by the end of it. Mom and dad even flew all the way to Alabama for a one day trip to watch me walk! One commencement speech said that we all need to search for our "why." Why we do the work we do and why we live life the way we do. Our purpose. Hi my friends....if you love South West cuisine like me....you are welcome...lol. Richard makes this once a week, and uses the George Foreman Grill. Black Bean Quesadillas Ingredients ½ onion, sliced ½ bell pepper, sliced 1 tablespoon evoo 1 can black beans, rinsed and drained 1 tablespoon, taco seasoning 4 medium whole grain tortillas or gluten-free 2 avocados, peeled, halved, and sliced ¼ cup minced cilantro 1 lime, cut in half 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese Instructions In a pan over medium-high heat, saute onion and bell pepper in 1 tablespoon evoo for 2-3 minutes or until tender. Add the black beans and taco seasoning. Cook for another minute. Transfer mixture to a small bowl and set aside. In a small bowl, lightly mash the avocados with a fork. Stir in cilantro and juice of ½ lime, season with salt and pepper to taste. Spread the desired amount of mashed avocado onto half of a tortilla. Top with bean mixture and cheese, if using. Fold the tortilla closed over the veggies. Repeat until all tortillas are filled and all fillings are used. Cook on medium-high heat in frying pan for 2-3 minutes per side or until the outside is crispy. Serve with salsa!

If you think back to the time when you had your first child or the first time you got to be a parent (for me that was almost 25 years ago) & how much you loved adored, wanting to protect them, do right by them & be the best version of yourself for them.. Well you get a second chance at it becoming a grandparent only this time your an improved version of that parent you were at the beginning. My son was 19 when he had Alaia our first Moko, the beginning of our next chapter in life.. Today Miss Alaia Rose is 5yrs 2mths & 3 weeks & her sister Remy May is 3yrs 3mths & 3 weeks old & my life has never felt more meaningful & more intuned as a grandmother then I feel as a mother. There is just something extra Phenomenal about being a Nana to my mokos, the importance of parenting skills amped up to 1000+. I once thought, there was no higher love then a mothers love for her children until I became a grandmother, now I just want to better care for myself to be around as long as possible to see them evolve from little ladies to beautiful woman. 👩❤️👩 #mywhy
