Old shoes-New shoes We spent a lot of time and energy hunting down these brake shoes. Many people across the country were using their resources to help find these. After over a week, we were thinking of having them relined. How did we (mostly Susan) distress these signs? We left them outside (in the desert) for several months, impaled, burned, scratched, and beat up the signs, and even sanded away stain on the wood after it dried. When we hang up the signs, they will look like they’ve been there for 60 years! Pretty blue butterflies were all over the wild buckwheat, and a flower crab spider looked a bit like a tiny yellow elephant on the buckwheat. A ladybug shook her from right leg up at Susan for interrupting her sun-gazing. At the end of the day, a bee fly lay in a marigold with all its legs collapsed underneath. So between power outages, monsoon rains and sleepless nights, I haven't gotten a ton done this weekend. Plan C (or A, depending on who you ask) worked! The ceiling is almost complete. I was done doing hard stuff today, so I stopped work on the ceiling and opted to finally install the stained board covering the raw end of the dividing wall. I've been wanting to see that in real life for weeks! . We are headed to finally retreive the mattress from storage. Funny story... had we finished the build Friday in time to leave and tried to put in the bed platform, it wouldn't have fit. The back of the dividing wall had toe-in of about 3/4". So, we spent time fixing that yesterday, thus the missing window molding. Ah, bus building. Gotta love it! . I am hoping to get the seats in tomorrow. Rotted floors have been removed!!! Next we’ll be preparing any metal that was underneath the rot for some fresh wood. This will mean sanding back any surface rust, properly treating the metal with rust protectant, a healthy coat of a silicone based paint (like bedliner) and then the new wood can be cut and attached! We see a lot of conversions where people skip repairing the floor and just lay new floor over the top of any rot. But it seems so pointless to us as all you’re ultimately doing is bandaid fixing the issue. It’s even worse when you think that our bus had comparatively very little rot - and we still had a few parts where the wood was about to give way! Looking forward to getting the floors done. Realizing I’d been avoiding taking pictures in our beautiful home because to me, it’s still not done. There are so many things in this bus that either need to be finished or redone because we wanted to get back on the road. (The rattan cabinets underneath the bed being one of them. 🤦♀️) But today it hit me that we have no pics of us together in this big beautiful bus we built together. And why? Because I’m being hyper critical about something that we literally put together from scratch, just the two of us. Is it perfectly, 100% done? No, but seldom is anything, ever. Sometimes the gratitude of the beautiful home we live in and life we live slips away from me, I get caught up in wanting things done NOW. And wanting everything to be perfect. Yet here we are living in this stunning bus that is totally customized, and has brought us to so many amazing places, giving us passage to exciting destinations and also a cozy and comfortable home to come back to at the end of each day, no matter where we are. And so when I start to get ahead of myself, I have to look at those minor projects that are incomplete and rather than nitpicking them, use them as a reminder of just how far we’ve come. Ahhhhhhhh!!!!! Sometimes you just need to let it all out!!!! Remember when our bus wouldn’t shift up from 4th gear? And then we went to a mechanic in Corpus Christi who reset the transmission and the then the bus shifted great? Well it shifted great until it didn’t again. Because Eleutheria had been driving so great we decided to make our way out of Texas. We left Fredericksburg (wine country) to head to Las Cruces, New Mexico. There’s a whole bunch of nothing between there. This is when we started having shifting problems again, AND it was worse. We started getting stuck in 2nd gear. Not good when you are on the highway and the speed limit is 80 miles/hr. Well spoiler alert, we limped our way to New Mexico with some rather stressful moments. We pulled into a Harvest Host for the night and New Mexico greeted us with a killer sunset. It felt like a sign, we are where we need to be right now. List -1 Us - 0 . We worked so hard this week... literally, sun up to sun down every day. Ultimately, the list of stuff to do was just too big for 6 days. After setbacks mounting the solar and a huge fail on vision-to-reality on the ceiling yesterday, at 10pm last night, we surrendered. . Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the festival this weekend; we will definitely plan on the next one. Until then, we will start Plan C on the ceiling and finally get our seating out of the garage and into the bus. . Despite my disappointment, today I will choose to focus on the wins. The kitchen is beautiful. The floors look great. All of Jason's efforts with the electrical were successful; we have lights and outlets everywhere, and they all work! We have solar on the roof, which was a huge win for him. . This is our first bus build, and we are definitely learning as we go. Everything is easier the second time. . Our next big trip is planned for June... plenty of time to figure out those unfinished items. Keep following along. Took Trixie out for a spin recently for the first time this year—she started great by the way—but experienced a weird smell on the drive. Got back home okay and when I looked under the hood to check things out I discovered coolant EVERYWHERE!! Apparently she sprung a leak in the coolant reservoir hose. No problem changing out the damaged portion since there was already a connector in the line. Only it looked shot. A bit of cleanup with a wire brush on the grinder and it was practicality new again.
