I've been knitting this winter instead of sewing, and I have projects completed! First up is this one I shared a while back; took about 3 weeks all up. The very popular and well written Flax by @tincanknits. My first top down sweater knit and I knew I was going to be a convert because I despise seaming knits (even though in general I don't mind a bit of hand sewing). One of my favourite yarns, the good old @bendigowoollenmills Luxury in 10ply (colour Aquarium), which I've used for a few other projects. 200g balls with no joins has got to be a winner for garment knitting right? When my Grandad got put into a nursing home last year, I took possession of a bunch of family photographs that belonged to my great-grandma originally. One of them was this photo of my Mum as a baby and my great-grandma had written on the back that this shawl had been knitted for my Mum by my great-great Grandma, Eda Mary Frost nee. Wild. The second photo shows Eda with my great-grandma Sylvia Quayle as a little girl. This woman had a lot of tragedy in her life. She lost her first husband in WW1 and baby boy within months of each other, not long after this photo was taken. She later remarried and emigrated to Australia. She then lost her youngest son in WW2 and another son in an accident Anyone who knows me, knows how obsessed with family history and heirlooms I am. The shawl isn’t in our family anymore, so I decided to knit a replica. I was lucky enough to track down the EXACT pattern that my great-great grandma had used. I spent months and months knitting this. At times it was laborious, but throughout my time knitting I often thought about my great-great grandma. I imagine all the thoughts she would have had about the little baby she was knitting this for. To some people this is just an old-fashioned baby shawl, but some will understand the love that is woven into something like this. Sensible cardigan project no 3: the deluxe grandpa edition. Very happy with this one. Own pattern (glorified rectangles! with pockets!) and yarn is @bendigowoollenmills Luxury 8ply in Stone. This is the one that I started in Wickerwork twist stitch and then frogged. I'm glad I did. The stockinette was good for my broken brain, and sometimes it's best not to overdo a simple idea right? The buttons are just whatevers from the stash because I couldn't get to the button shop in lockdown, but I think they're growing on me too.
