The three facets of Parasitical development. CAD, Quarter-Scale, and Real Life. The dash bar is in, and I narrowed the rear track width, to tidy things up. The idea here is to present a fanciful, three-dimensional, real world, line drawing of an antique Ford pickup truck. It is sooo tiny, lol. With the rear narrowed, I think I can make this fold up and fit in a 5x5’ storage unit, or on a large pallet. That means I can tow, transport, or keep the little critter almost anywhere (civilized) on the planet. I’ve been apprehensive about compacting it this much, because the ‘Murica in me really loves BIG vehicles. I was born and raised when the American big car was so long it wouldn’t fit in a small garage. At least not with the door closed. 😄 Small cars were more of a novelty. I liked them, but always returned to my beasties. The McMurtry Spéirling hypercar hitting the scene recently, and obliterating everything in its path, helps. It’s roughly the same size as Parasite. FaceOff (comparison) likely coming soon. The Spéirling (Irish for Thunderstorm) also has a projected top speed in excess of 200mph, which eases my concerns about Parasite’s almost identical 78-inch wheelbase. I Spent the weekend on Lake Cooper and Gaynor swamp wildlife reserve protecting ducks from shooters with a group of really rad people from CADS over the weekend. (Coalition against duck shooting) One of the most rewarding but hard weekends I have ever had in my life. I have kept my photos of this weekend G rated as no one should have to see the horrific damage that duck shooters cause. Duck shooting season commenced last week in Victoria. 2.5 months of the year where shooting ducks is legal every. Single. Day. Even though other states in Australia have banned this disgusting ‘hobby’ the Victorian government still allows this to occur.. This disgraceful act litters nature with bullet cassings and sees hundreds of thousands inocent ducks killed throughout Victoria’s wetlands, and leaves many more injured to die slow and painful deaths. The killed and injured ducks include many endangered breeds.. all in the name of ‘fun’ CADS- a organisations made up of 100% volunteers station volunteers across Victoria throughout this period to make it harder for shooters by putting ourselves in harms warm to protect these beautiful innocent animals. We did many things to accomplish this even though the Victoria law makes it very hard for us. It is illegal for a non shooter to be in possession of an injured duck to help them. Upskilling and capacity building in the Goldfields !!! HOPE recently facilitated two safeTALK suicide prevention workshops in Coolgardie and Menzies, both hosted by Bega. The training was delivered by Stephen Morrison, HOPE’s Justice & Community Manager and Hannah Matanda, HOPE’s Suicide Prevention Coordinator in the Goldfields. The safeTALK sessions are a free half day workshop that teach attendees the skills to recognise people that may be struggling with mental health, and assist them by taking action to help them connect with life-saving resources. The power of suggestion. The more *necessary* ingredients I pasted on the CAD model, the further away from the initial spark I found myself. The quarter-scale model has, purposely, been sitting beside me on the build plate, with nothing but the main exoskeleton cage and four wheels. That’s what reignited this spark in the first place. So, I started deleting stuff. First the bed, which was a modified grab from the vault; originally crafted for Buzz. Just suggest a bed, don’t actually make one. I decided on two, big, tubular, wood rails, with smaller lower support rails. I Frenched ‘59 Caddy taillights in the ends, with matching smaller marker lights in the lower rails. Yeah. It lets the exo cab be the star of the little show, but continues its aesthetic to the end. Then, I hacked the hood into what is essentially a center trim piece, and shortened the windshield glass. There will a bit more there eventually, but for now it cleaned and focused the aesthetic.There will be a “dash” bar that runs side to side, and picks up the hood trim piece. I think. A copper (probably leaf over carbon) Model T grille shell, with a carbon filler panel. I’m repurposing my Shure studio mic style taillights into Gothic headlights. Yeah. Now we’re back on the right track. The Victorian duck hunting season has started once again 💔 Today we joined the Coalition Against Duck Shooting out on the wetlands at Wooroonook Lake for the opening day of the season. We documented the important life-saving work of the rescue teams, some of whom have been working tirelessly for decades to stop this violent ‘sport’, as well as the wounding and deaths of many ducks, including protected species who had been left behind by shooters. Despite the majority of Victorians wanting to see an end to duck shooting, the Labor government has gone against their own parliamentary committee’s recommendation and allowed the bloodbath to continue for yet another year. Plot Twists Pt 1: The Jeep thing, at this moment in time, seems to be a bigger bite than I want to chew. With the help of the scale model, I realized how much, in total resources, the Jeep body alone was going to cost vs the benefits it would bring. I modeled this bright idea months ago, but went with the Jeep instead, and tucked this away in the vault. I tried Bella’s (1/4-scale) exoskeleton cage on the developing Parasite quarter-scale model, and the rest, as they say… The effort required, compared to the Jeep body, is fractional. The challenge will be to make all of the individual design components speak as one cohesive statement. All the many, exposed, parts and pieces must conspire to sing a certain melody. Can you hear it? The second issue uncovered with the scale model is that the Jeep felt kind of *normal*. 🙄 This thing is my pitch, my gateway, into TPD’s future. All or freaking nothing. This exoskeleton, ‘25 C-Cab, Model TT Ford truck concept, is anything but “normal”… As rendered here, the raw carbon-composite exoskeleton cage is finished with TPD “Dukie Stick” 😂🎶 (brown) tinted clear, to complement a host of black and bare metal finishes on the chassis, brown leather, and natural wood. Yes, it’s pretty crude. It’s not meant to be pretty, it’s a physical design review. Some really positive developments here. One, from the minute the laser starting cutting the first panel, until I stopped to type this, I couldn’t leave this thing alone. Pure adrenaline. That’s what I need for me to really get into the real-world build of a project like this. Scratch-building is crazy intense, and requires a good energy loop to reach the most effective conclusion. Looking over my shoulder at the developing quarter-scale Parasite, as I’m typing this, it has *presence*; an essential element in developing my “machine” quality. As a business tool, this could work quite well in communications with existing and prospective clients. I paused here, because I have an idea for using some of the cores I printed for Bella’s C-Cab exoskeleton to build Parasite’s RagTop frame. That’s part of the point of the quarter-scale builds - to reveal the opportunities for improvement, and expose the time and resource sinkholes. And, I have all those, already printed, core tubes just sitting there. I am also figuring out where I need templates and fixtures to accelerate development of the foam body core, and improve accuracy and detail. Riddled with indecision, I have decided to lock the design here, and see what happens when it transfers to real life. Those are the actual cut files. First the quarter-scale, then a full-scale cardboard rough-in, and on to the actual full-scale foam-core. If I make it that far, and I am still uninspired, I’ll have less than $100 worth of materials invested and you know me, it’ll find its way to the dumpster. Don’t get me wrong, I love this little Jeep, and am happy with where it took me in design. Making that a real-world, functional, *thing* is a whole ‘nother matter though. It takes massive doses of adrenaline, to kick enough dopamine, to trigger more adrenaline, etc, etc, to keep my interest in these projects. Betwixt, between… 🤔 Still wrestling with a fair bit of uncertainty with Parasite. Dunno why, just something… 🤷 🙄 Over the weekend, I did a FaceOff with my coveted, possible all-time fav, the LaFerrari. It’s not about which is best, that’s a $2-3 million dollar Ferrari lol. It’s more what do I think, how do I feel, seeing my little creation beside it?! Not bad really. I think Parasite kinda stands its proverbial ground. Annoyingly, this little experiment had almost zero effect on my indecision. 😶 Should I decide to I barrel on, it would be based more on logic than passion. Which brings me to an interesting vantage: I am 100% as passionate as ever about *design* in general, mechanical things especially, and personal transportation most specifically. However, I don’t know that I have so much zeal for actually owning *anything* anymore. Minimalism is my way, my place of zen. Things, in my possession or care, feel increasingly burdensome.
