Day 30 of the Tolkien drawing challenge brings us to the Barrow Wight. These creatures of darkness are akin to the Nazgûl, in service to Sauron, if nowhere as powerful. Wights stick to dark places like tombs, and prey on weak creatures. What description exists of them describes glowing eyes and skeletal hands. I was struck by the thought that they sounded more like the make-believe costume villains of old Scooby Doo cartoons than very fearsome fantasy creatures. My birthday is tomorrow (send LOTR memes and hobbit doodles), and I was gifted this set of LOTR from my dad. 📚☺️ He found it at a used bookstore for $5. I did already have worn copies of TTT and ROTK but I love having the actual box. I’ll find good homes for my duplicate copies! Frodo y la redención de Gollum 👇👇👇 En la ciénaga de los muertos, las películas nos relata una escena preciosa, entre Frodo y Gollum y como en ella vivimos la redención. Gollum esta mascullando sus repetidas y tristes palabras como siempre. Frodo le pregunta: Quien eres tú ? Gollum como una buena víctima del pecado y la culpabilidad le dice: “No nos pregunten, no le importa”. Gollum reacciona negando el contacto, el recuerdo de su yo humano, ya que ello le llevaría a recordar el porqué de su miseria. Frodo le insiste asegurando que su vida es una triste historia, Gollum casi sin querer se lo afirma con un “poema”. “Frías las manos y el corazón del viajero alejado de su región”, Gollum ha realizado un penoso viaje de la vida a la muerte del pecado y la soledad infernal, sus recuerdos sus palabras su propia vida es una fría y triste historia que helaría a la propia muerte “No pueden seguir la vereda con el sol escondido y la luna muerta”. Pero, Frodo le recuerda algo que ninguna otra criatura le ha recordado. Colmado de llanto y pena la grimosa criatura reacciona a esta frase llena de significado, “No fuiste muy distinto a un hobbit un día, verdad Smeagol ?”. Frodo no solo se interesa por la vida, el porqué de su dolor y su pena a Gollum, si no que le recuerda lo que fue, y algo mucho más profundo, le recuerda su nombre. Smeagol, le recuerda que antes de ser dueño del anillo/pecado, era dueña de alguien más, De Dios. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings By JRR Tolkien It’s been nearly 10 years since I last read The Lord of the Rings, so it was definitely time to read them again, and I absolutely love this cover and artstyle. What can I say, these books just bring me joy and happiness. Tolkien’s world is so much more than fantasy, in many ways it is a reflection of our own world, and a reminder of the Good. It is so easy to get lost in the chaos of the world, to think that the will of Evil is triumphant, to forget that there are other forces at work in this world. While it is common to view Lord of the Rings as just a simple fantasy story, and there are many who view it that way, that is missing the deeper meaning that Tolkien intentionally, if not at first, was trying to tell the world. 📚 Little Book Haul 📚 Yesterday, I popped into my usual used bookstore on a whim to see what was there. Honestly it felt like every author I was looking for had been bought up by someone & only the stained torn up copies were left. Sometimes that happens... But I found another copy of the Hobbit that I didn't have (I'll feature it more on Tolkien Tuesday) which is always nice. 😌 That was worth the trip alone for me. The other two books were cheap & caught me by a synopsis, hopefully they're alright! I'll try to sum up the synopsis for both below. 🎃 Raising The Horseman by Serena Valentino 🎃 This is a Disney story set 200 years after the Headless Horseman's haunting of Sleepy Hollow, about a young descendant of Katrina van Tassel named Kat. Duty to fulfill a legacy & a desire for a life outside of Sleepy Hollow leads Kat down a path of unraveling secrets & romance. I like Sleepy Hollow, the cover is cool, it has LGBTQIA+ representation, and it was $3. I'll give it a shot sometime. 🧠 Danger In Numbers by Heather Graham 🧠 A ritualistic murder on the side of a remote road brings in the Florida police. Special Agent Amy Larson meets FBI Special Agent Hunter Forrest, an agent who has extensive knowledge of violent cults, to aid her in her work in this 1st of 4 cop fiction thriller series. What secrets will they unravel?
