Here’s why I can’t capture my process in a reel ⤵️ The process of turning rocks into paint requires numerous steps and loads of patience. Not only is it a long multi step process of finding, crushing, filtering, drying, mixing, and mulling rocks), it’s also a s l o w process. Nothing about my artwork is “fast”. Each step requires time and patience along with the physical demands you could imagine crushing up rocks would take. But wow is it worth it in the end. 💫 A 7 second reel can’t capture everything about this beautiful process. So follow along and join me in my studio as I go to work and share more of what I do. 🥰 #intuitiveabstract #chanelljoyfineart #studiovibe #modernneutrals #earthinspiredhome # #wabisabidesign

Making paint from ashes and coals ⬇️ I was recently hired to do a huge commission for the restaurant emberandiron. Because they’re known for the flavors their dishes gain cooked in cast iron over a wood burning grill, I suggested using some of the ashes and coals from their kitchen fires to create pigment for their artwork. Now they have artwork hanging that not only adds beauty and texture to their space, but also tells the story of who they are and what they stand for. I love that. And I love that I was involved in making this happen. #naturalpigmentart #neutraltextures #blackandwhiteinteriors #blackandwhitedecor #artcurator #chanelljoyfineart

How did I start painting with rocks? I get this question a lot. Obviously, it’s not a new art form. It’s the oldest form of art in existence and still practiced in many cultures today. But it’s not something I thought to try until I was reminded as an adult of something I loved as a child. Thinking of how resilient we become each time we work through a difficult experience in our lives. We may be left changed—emotionally scarred, physically exhausted, mentally drained. But on the other side of it all we’ve grown stronger. The cracks are still there. But there’s beauty in the cracks because we stay intact despite them. This piece will be part of my upcoming collection, The Delicate Dance. What should I name it? #chanelljoyfineart #thedelicatedancecollection #abstractartist

Some of the things I did this month in the studio ⤵️ After a summer away this month was all about waking up this space so that my creativity could flow. Cleaning, organizing and assessing my supplies were first priority. Sketching and experimenting with a few rock pigments followed as a creative warmup once my space felt in order. I also gathered inspiration to create a mood board and began planning next steps for new work. Thanks for joining me on this little recap. Slowed down Art. One aspect of rest that benefits me personally is slowing down my artistic process and not rushing through the creation of my art. I’ve definitely landed on the perfect medium for that concept of slow haven’t I?? Breaking down these rocks into pigment for usable paint is quite a long and labor intensive process. Many of you have been here long enough to see my process from beginning to end and are shocked at how much work I have to do for such a small amount of pigment. So why do I consider this restful? It’s because it requires me to be very present in the stages both leading up to making the art, and during the art’s creations. Being rushed and hurried stresses me out. But with modern conveniences we are often encouraged to tackle tasks in the fastest, most efficient way. Beneficial sometimes for sure. Yet, more and more people are adopting this idea of slowed down living. It’s why we are trying to make sour dough starters when we could easily go purchase a loaf ready made. Why we try our hardest to nurse little seed starter trays when the plant nurseries have the vegetables already grown. And It’s why I will take the time to crush rocks or soil into pigments when the art stores have tubes ready to go. There’s something so satisfying when you buy out the time to do things the slower way. And this feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment leaves me feeling rested and whole. Perhaps what I love most about my process is the way it incorporates the senses. My eyes watch the colors blend, I smell the earthiness of the rock powder, I feel for the change in consistency as I mull, I hear the soft scraping of my tools… it’s a very tactile, tangible experience. My mind is focused on the task but not with any aggressive intensity. It’s gentle, intentional. #chanelljoyfineart #tactileartist #studioscenes #rockpigmentpaint #creativeflow #intentionalwork

The studio is gently shifting back into creative mode as I work on several recent commissions. I love seeing canvases lying everywhere in various stages of completion. It does get a bit cramped in my small studio sometimes as I shuffle between shipping off works and creating new ones. I woke up to 100,000 of you here with me in this space. 100,000…Wow. I’m humbled, excited, and—if I’m being honest—a little bit terrified😅. This is the most people interaction I’ve ever had to have! LOL! That so many of you would choose to take time out of your day to peek into my studio practice and show appreciation for my work is amazing to me. I’m so happy each one of you have hit that follow button. I love the conversations, the questions, the insight I gain from you all… Social media is so strange to me sometimes, but being able to use it for something positive and show you all glimpses into my creative world is pretty rewarding. I see there’s a new reel trend where you list a bunch of fun facts for people to know about you over some B-roll footage. So maybe instead of doing that in this caption, I’ll make one of those videos instead. What fun facts do y’all want to know about me (my use of the word ‘y’all’ just gave you one fact: I’m from the south)?? Let me know in the comments and I’ll include some of them when I make my reel because I never know what type of info to include! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a new series of rock pigment paintings releasing tomorrow so I’ve got some work to do! 🙌 #allowmetoreintroducemyself #chanelljoyfineart #rockpaintingart #rockpigments #natureinspiredart #floridaartists #artstudio_post

Appreciating the hours and hours of work it took to fill each of these jars. My process for crushing rocks into fine pigment powders is not for the faint of heart. It’s not easy and it’s not fast. I got back into the studio today. It’s been a while since I’ve been in it…I mean REALLY been in it. Not just running inside to grab something then leave again. Our summer was busy and amazing and exciting and I knew I’d be taking a studio break. I prepared for it. But I never prepare for how strange it feels to start up again... So today I opened the doors and windows, let in fresh air and starting making a plan to wake this studio (and myself🫣) back up. I decided to complete one task a day this week to flex my stiff creative muscles. I’ll share what I do each day if you want to follow along. #studioreset #studiorefresh #neutralart #inspiredbynature #organicmodern #texturedneutrals #slowliving #warmneutrals #artfulinteriors #foragedhome #earthinspiredhome #texturedart #intentionalhome #intentionalspaces #soothingspaces #chanelljoyfineart

I’m going to bring you all along as I start one of the largest pieces I’ve been commissioned to do to date. But this is no ordinary commission.
