Yesterday was the yartzeit of Reb Shayale. Rav Yeshaya Steiner was known as Reb Shayale of Kerestir (Kerestirer). He lived from 1851 until 1925 and was a Rebbe in the town of Kerestir in Hungary. In Kerestir, Reb Shaye became a Hasidic Rebbe and became known as a miracle worker, and tens of thousands of Hasidim came to his court. He know for his hachnasos orchim on an institutional scale. Even when deeply studying Torah or davening, he would stop everything if a fellow Jew needed food, drink or a warm bed. He belonged to his people, and they to him. Many believe his portrait can be used as a segula and offers protection against misfortune, as well as to keeps away mice. More recently many chassidim and non-chassidim have made special trips to Keristir, Hungary to daven at his kever. Today is the Yartzeit of Rav Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld. A talmid of the Ksav Sofer of Pressburg, Rav Yosef Chaim Zonnenfeld moved to Ottoman controlled Eretz Yisroel in 1873. He became the right-hand man of Rabbi Yehoshua Leib Diskin and assisted him in numerous activities including founding of the Diskin Orphanage, and the fight against secularism. Although he initially worked closely with the future Chief Rabbi of Israel under the British mandate - Rav Avrohom Yitzchok Kook, they famously disagreed on many areas of Jewish life with Rav Zonnenfeld feeling that Rav Kook could best serve the general community outside of Jerusalem.
