We spent a day roaming around the Huangling old village near Wuyuan in Jiangxi province. While far from being the prettiest, it was still a nice detour during our trip to the northeast part of the province. Seven years ago, MIX was commissioned by Jiangshan Fishing Village to formulate a rural renewal plan. It is hoped that from the perspective of the “man” of the village origin, the small fishing village can be changed by using fragmented transformation and construction. The first phase of the Plan consists the construction of rural public health facilities, to meet villagers’ needs of nearby toilets in their daily life and working. The two public toilets are located at the entrance of the village and the groves in the village. The most basic forms and architectural methods of construction ensure that a simple modern aesthetic can still be presented in less capital and regional construction conditions. And through the dislocation of buildings, a “gap” is formed, allowing the building to enjoy good ventilation and lighting effects with only a small amount of equipment. The renovation originates from the simplest life and cultural needs of the villagers, and it affects the genes of the village from the very beginning. Kolejne zakręty przede mną i moim skuterem 🤣 A po drodze zostałam zaproszona w maleńkiej wiosce do tańczącego korowodu, zmierzającego do świątyni. Zaraz potem moje 👀 były szeroko otwarte. I to nie tylko z powodu ciemności. ❇️ Nam Lod Cave - imponująca jaskinia, zrobiła na mnie niesamowite wrażenie. Olbrzymie przestrzenie i niezliczona ilość stalaktytów, stalagmitów i stalagnatów. Niektóre z tych formacji liczą sobie 20 tys. lat. Na koniec spływ rzeką Nam Lang na bambusowych tratwach, w otoczeniu sumów gigantów, czekających na jedzonko. ❇️ Ban Rak Thai czyli cel tego etapu podróży. Mała mieścina 1 km od granicy z Mjanma (Birmą), położona na wysokości 1800 m n.p.m. Można mieć wrażenie, że zajechałam za daleko i trafiłam do Chin. Miasto bowiem, założone w 1948 roku przez imigrantów uciekających przed komunistyczną rewolucją , przesycone jest chińską tradycją, kulturą i smakiem. Króluje tu herbata, której liście dodawane są do wielu potraw lub też jako samodzielne danie. Ban Rak Thai można podziwiać, delektując się pyszną herbatą, z bambusowej łodzi wiosłowej pływającej niespiesznie po jeziorze. Kulinarnie również pełne zaskoczenie. Matcha dodawana chyba do każdego napoju, matcha w formie ciasta, matcha w formie lodów. A wieczorna kolacja to ziejące ogniem chińskie specjały. Nawet nocleg może być specyficzny 😂. Sharing a rural renewal project MIX Architecture did in 2017-2018. Seven years ago, MIX was commissioned by Jiangshan Fishing Village to formulate a rural renewal plan. It is hoped that from the perspective of the “man” of the village origin, the small fishing village can be changed by using fragmented transformation and construction. The first phase of the Plan consists the renovation of the vacant old homes. The design retains the external appearance of the rare old houses with the maximum degree in this village, hoping to emphasize the importance of regional characteristics and cultural heritage. At the same time, disruptive functional replacement and spatial reconstruction of the interior of the building were implemented. A bookcase wrapped in a patio and a glass tea pavilion facing the courtyard were implanted. শহর থেকে ঘণ্টা তিনেক দূরে চাইনিজদের একটি গ্রামে ঘুরতে গিয়েছিলাম। সেখানেই ওনাদের সাথে দেখা। একত্রে যৌথ পরিবারে সবার বসবাস। ছেলেপেলেরা লেখাপড়ার জন্য শহরে থাকে। বৃদ্ধরা বাড়ি পাহারা দিচ্ছে। কর্তাদের অধিকাংশ উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে কৃষিকাজের সাথে সম্পৃক্ত। তাঁরাও গ্রামে থাকে। হালচাষের এই লিগ্যাসি যুগ যুগ ধরে বংশ পরম্পরায় বহন করছে। মায়েরাও এক্ষেত্রে সমান সমান। ঘর সামলিয়ে ক্ষেত খামারে তাঁদের অবদান কোনো অংশে কম নয়। পরিবারের সবার বড় বড় আঙুর বাগান আছে। কেউ কেউ গ্রীনহাউজে শাকসবজিও চাষ করেন। সকলে মিলে বাড়ির সামনের জায়গাটাতে বসে চায়ের জন্য গাছের ডাল থেকে কচি পাতা সংগ্রহ করছিলো। তখনই আমরা গিয়ে ঢুঁ মেরেছি। উদ্দেশ্যে, সবাই এত মনোযোগ দিয়ে কি করছে তা দেখা। আমাদের উপস্থিতিতে ওনারা যে বিরক্ত হয়নি আশা করি তা ছবি দেখেই বোঝা যাচ্ছে। এক বৃদ্ধা চা নিয়ে কতক্ষণ জ্ঞান দিয়েছে। আমাদের চাইনিজ ভাষায় দক্ষতা অতি নগন্য হওয়ার কারণে কিছুই বুঝিনি। জ্ঞান দিলেই তো হচ্ছে না, নেওয়ার মতো যোগ্যতাও তো থাকতে হবে! এক্ষেত্রে আমরা কিছুটা পিছিয়ে। এক মাঝবয়সী চাচা ঘরে বসার জন্য আহ্বান করলেন। আমাদের দেশের খোঁজখবর নিলেন। অনেকের মতো এরা বাংলাদেশকে ইন্ডিয়ার অংশ মনে করেনি দেখে ভালোলেগেছে। বাংলাদেশের চাইনিজ নামটি বলার সাথে সাথে খুব সহজেই চিনে ফেলেছে! ফেরার সময় যাতে ওনাদের ঘরে কিছুক্ষণের জন্য বসে যাই সেই নিমন্ত্রণ করেছে একজন। চায়ের দাওয়াত পেয়ে আমরাও ওনাদের আতিথেয়তায় মুগ্ধ হয়েছি। যদিও সেই সুযোগ ছিল না। আমরা ফিরেছিলাম ভিন্ন পথে। ওনাদের চা বানানোর প্রক্রিয়া নিয়ে পরবর্তীতে লিখবো। সেটাও বেশ ইন্টারেস্টিং! আপাতত এই হাসিমুখগুলো দেখে তুষ্ট হোন। #travelwithforkan #forkan_alam #China #chinesevillage #chinesepeople #চীন #চায়না

Set Designs for “DISNEY’S MULAN” (Mulan’s Village) Generated using Midjourney Continuing with my concept for Disney’s Mulan that centres each scene/location around a traditional Chinese material, I imagine Mulan’s village made out of paper, specifically rice paper. Rice paper has many qualities that seem right for this sequence, strong but delicate, opaque but lets light through...which would be great for lighting, and speaks to Mulans struggles with her public expectations versus private dreams.
