In the course of our IP practice, we have advised Clients who were looking to protect their Brand(s) in Africa. However, as enthusiastic they sounded, we observed that the recurring approach to brand protection in Africa does not really cover specific countries. In some interesting cases, one country registration is used as adequate cover for Africa. For example, protection in Nigeria is assumed to be enough protection in Africa. If you are looking to cover Africa in your brand protection, there are 2 strategies you can adopt to give you comfort and ensure that your brand has adequate spread in Africa. 1. Regional Giants Protection (RGP) Here you can pick out regional giants and register in those countries. Examples of regional giants include: NIGERIA (West) SOUTH AFRICA (South) EGYPT (North) Kenya (East) This basically gives you visibility because of the size and powerful effect of these countries. However, in terms of adequacy, it can be argued that registration in Nigeria for example, does not in any way affect or impact other busy neighbouring countries such as Benin & Ghana who have active commercial activities. This also applies to registering in South Africa and leaving Zimbabwe with an active IP regime. 2. Strategic Blocs Protection (SBP) Here you can take advantage of the various IP Blocs available in Africa. For example, we have: ARIPO - which is an IP bloc covering 13 Anglophone Countries namely Botswana, Cape Verde, Kingdom of Eswatini, The Gambia, Kingdom of Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Sao Tome and Principe, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. A single registration under ARIPO will conveniently cover 13 out of 54 Countries in Africa. OAPI - this is an IP bloc covering 17 Francophone Countries namely Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, the Comoros, the Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, the Niger, Senegal, and Togo A single registration under OAPI will cover 17 out of 54 Countries in Africa As you can see, with just 2 registrations under the blocs mentioned, you would have covered 30 Countries in Africa.

The Jade Buddha Temple is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai. In 1882, a temple was built to keep two jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that ended the Qing Dynasty. The statues were saved and a new temple was built in 1928. 🏮 The temple is famous for the two pieces of Jade Buddha carved with whole white jade; the sitting Buddha of 1.95 meters tall and the reclining Jade Buddha of 0.96 meters tall. Moreover, the temple houses one of the largest collections of Buddhist scripture in China. Yu Garden (Yuyuan Garden) is a classical garden in the old town of Shanghai, dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and was privately owned. 🌿🪷 The garden is small in size (20,000 sq metres), but it contains all elements that a classical Chinese garden should have. The pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds and cloisters all have unique characteristics. Second-day morning of The Law Society of Hong Kong’s visit in Beijing: Visit to HKSAR Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress The Law Society of Hong Kong conducted its second day’s visit in Beijing on 17 April. In the morning, President Mr C. M. Chan led Law Society Council members to pay a visit to the HKSAR Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (”NPCSC“) in the Great Hall of the People. The Law Society was warmly received by Mr Shen Chunyao (Chairman) and Mr Zhang Yong (Vice-Chairman) of the HKSAR Basic Law Committee and the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPCSC. At the meeting, Mr Shen pointed out that Hong Kong recently completed national security legislation and has fulfilled its constitutional obligation to safeguard national security. In the future, Hong Kong will open a new chapter of development. He encouraged the Law Society to continue to adhere to its duties, uphold the principle of the rule of law, and ensure the stability and long-term implementation of “One Country, Two Systems” in Hong Kong. President Mr C. M. Chan said that Hong Kong is the only common law jurisdiction in China. Under the country’s strategic policy of rigorously developing new quality productive forces, Hong Kong legal profession can use its inherent advantages to enhance high-level development of industries in Hong Kong and the Mainland. For example, in relation to intellectual property, Hong Kong lawyers can assist in registering copyrights, patents and trademarks at cross-jurisdiction level, thereby contributing to the protection of national intellectual property rights. After the meeting, the delegation was invited to a working lunch in the Hong Kong Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
