First bloom on my remake of Phalaenopsis Corning’s Violet (Phal violacea v indigo x Phal corningiana var blue). Second to last slide is compared to one of the sister plants expressing the dominant genetics for magenta versus coerulea, and last slide are the parent plants on pollination day. When I made this cross in 2020, of course this is the result I desired, but the chances of the coerulea/violet color coming through felt like a fool’s dream. Here we are, second plant from the cross to bloom and I have SO many more to bloom. I absolutely cannot wait to watch these grow up and bloom!

My first registered orchid hybrid 💜 here are the first two plants to bloom. Third slide shows the parents used on the day I made the cross with my friend and mentor @kenavant1 Phalaenopsis Pendragon’s Cloudburst Pendragon is the Pseudonym I use, inspired by Studio Ghibli’s Howl’s Moving Castle, the Great Wizard Pendragon, an alias Howl the main character uses. A Cloudburst is a sudden downpour in a short amount of time, but in this instance named after a choral piece of music by the composer Eric Whitacre in which the audience and choir create a rainstorm with sound in the performance hall. Music is my biggest inspiration, so I want to theme my hybrid names after important music to me. Cloudburst inspired me as a 16yo. I hope that my hybrids will inspire others one day too.

Phalaenopsis hieroglyphica- endemic to the Philippines, once considered a variety of Phal lueddemanniana. I find this species to generally lack any real discernible fragrance, the faintest hint of black pepper to my nose if any. Flowers are on the larger side, and typically blooms in the fall. Shown here are siblings from what I considered to be the best x sib of this species to date- Phal hieroglyphica ’ViClii’ FCC/AOS x ‘Marvelous’ AM/AOS, made by @kenavant1 Also of his creation, the final slide shows the ‘flava’ variety, which is promising to be extraordinary, Phal hieroglyphica ‘Tejas Sun’ x ‘Marvelously Yellow’ AM/AOS 🥰 Which one is your favorite?

This cross marks the second ever man-made Phalaenopsis hybrid, although the original was likely made with Phal bellina, which up until the 1990s was known as Phal violacea v Borneo. Another first bloom seedling from my hybridizing program! Phalaenopsis Jennifer Palermo under every lighting situation I could capture. Last slide compares to a sister plant from the same cross. I’m very happy to see this coerulea color coming through on one of these- out of 3 to spike, this is the only one expressing the coerulea or ‘Orchid Blue’ pigment. My monstera deliciosa recently started to push new growth after being dormant for almost a year. I assumed the plant wasn’t getting enough light and perhaps wasn’t going to grow much moving forward. To my surprise, it appears that the aerial roots managed to grow long enough and somehow found themselves digging into the soil. This (I assume) is what accelerated the growth of the plant in recent weeks. Two leaves have sprouted in the last 6 or so weeks and I can already see a third one pushing through the stem.
