When in doubt…Always Champagne. Learned this lesson years ago from my Somm friend/wine mentor. It has stayed with me and has yet to steer me wrong! A couple nights ago I was inspired to grill seafood and opportunistically picked up tuna steaks and scallops (they both looked unusually good and fresh at the seafood counter). Their preparations were vastly different. Naturally, choosing a wine that suited both presented a momentary challenge. Abandoning the ideas of a red or white Burgundy or Aligoté, I looked around for a Billecarte Salmon Brut Rosé hoping I had one stashed away and instead found an Egly Ouriet NV Extra Brut Premier Cru ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ composed of 100% Pinot Meunier I had yet to try. At this moment, I remembered one other truth: Always Egly-Ouriet if you can come by one. This striking Champagne of pure Pinot Meunier having seen no oak, was crisp and fresh with deep citrus (lemon and orange) and almond notes and razor sharp acidity…satisfying the pairing role with both sesame-soy crusted seared tuna as well as scallops grilled in lemon, butter, and white wine. The grilled pineapple planks and Shanghai tips (baby Bok choy) also played remarkably well with the versatile champagne. The whimsical simultaneous sake exploration didn’t go far, as the one I chose to open didn’t offer enough acidity or intensity to stand up to the bold flavors on the plate or clear the palate between bites. It was clearly a distraction and not an enhancement. Worth a shot though. I’m just getting my head around which sakes I enjoy and with which foods. So far, wine is still holding a strong lead in most cases. Alois Lageder 2021 Manzoni Bianco, Alto Adige, Italy First time for me to try a wine from the Manzoni Bianco grape. This grape is a crossing of pinot blanc and riesling, created about a century ago by Luigi Manzoni, who was a professor at the Oenologic school in Conegliano. This wine is pure, and juicy, it has some mineral touch from wet rocks, like riesling can have, from the pinot blanc it has some floral tones and pear.
