When MONTANA got brought in as a stray at the end of February, it was clear he had once been a loved and adored member of the family - his coat was shiny and clean, he was well fed and had amazing manners. We were not at all surprised when we found he was already neutered and chipped so of course we immediately reached out to the owner on the chip. He had been adopted as a puppy from the Humane Society Of North Texas to someone with an Austin address. We called, we texted, we e-mailed, we scoured social media for his owner but sadly, nothing led to us finding his owner and they never came looking for him. Sadly, this is a weekly occurrence here at HSNBA and we can't help but feel for these poor souls who have been discarded when life somehow got in the way and the person/animal bond has broken and we are left to pick up the pieces..... Now reaching the 2 month mark of being in the shelter, Montana is understandably starting to loose his cool. As you know, we do everything in our power to keep our guests as happy and healthy as possible but there's nothing that compares to a HOME for these pets and we need to find MONTANA somewhere to go FAST. Montana is about a year old, 60 pounds and some kind of bull dog mix. He is neutered, chipped, vaccinated and heartworm negative. Let's get this dog from CAGE to COUCH! Of course an ADOPTION would be best, but he would also really benefit from a foster home where he could decompress a little and we can learn even more about him and continue to look for his forever home together. Saturday Caturday Adoption Update! "Sandy" came to HSNBA in a trap in 2017 as just a tiny kitten. After getting fixed and vaccinated and microchipped, he was adopted! All these years later, we got a great little update! "This is Sandy now. He looks like he belongs on a Hallmark card. He lost his big brother in Nov. 2020, but in 2022 he acquired a little brother whose picture is included. A stray that attached itself to us. Sandy had a bout of urinary tract problems a year or so ago. But staying on the proper food has cured the problem. Otherwise, I am pleased to report he is a healthy, well cared for, and loved feline!" Did you see OSCAR in the paper this week? He's our Pet of the Week! While we are guessing he's about 11 years old, he has SO MUCH SPUNK and PERSONALITY, you'd think he was just a young'un! We suspect he's seen some things as he came in as a stray but we found a microchip and immediately called the listed owner (who lives in Corpus....) and they had no idea how he got here and were unable to come get him. Who loves an UNDERDOG??? We suspect "Ellie" had a pretty rough life before she got picked up as a stray in down town New Braunfels. Her coat was dull and spotty, she was terribly skinny and had probably been used for breeding and then tossed away like trash. Prior to getting picked up, there were reports of her attacking cats in the neighborhood, so we feel she needs a place to go where she won't be tempted by any felines. Sadly, she also tested heartworm positive. Heartworms is DEADLY and not only preventable but expensive to treat. In order for us to begin her treatment, we MUST find her a safe, quiet environment to recover so a local foster or adopter is a must so you can work closely with our veterinarian to get these heartworms eradicated once and for all. Ideally, her foster home would have no other pets - due to her heartworm status, we haven't been comfortable doing any meet and greets with other dogs because as long as there are worms growing in her heart, any intensive physical activity - like playing with another dog - could put her at risk, so we really don't know how she is with other dogs. Heartworm treatment typically takes 6-8 weeks so we would need a foster who could commit at least that long to her care. We will provide everything you need to care for her, and thanks to our Extra Mile Fund, we have funds available to cover her heartworm treatment. Ellie has the deck stacked against her, and we need your help to save her. We need to find an approved adopter or foster by MONDAY 4/29 or sadly, we will have to consider euthanasia. Every day that goes by without her getting treatment is another day she gets sicker so she is DESPERATE to find a safe place to go and FAST. We don't know how many people have let her down so far, but we are looking for the ONE person who can save her life. Help us find that person! At HSNBA, our average "Length of Stay" for dogs is only 15 days, but for some dogs, their stay with us is much, much longer. Concrete has been at HSNBA over 2 months and we are very worried he isn't going to be able to hold it together much longer living here in a kennel. He is wicked SMART and very athletic and is looking for an active home that can keep him mentally AND physically engaged. Since he came in as a stray, we have no idea what his life was like before he was brought here, but here with us he seems to really like other dogs and would enjoy having a brother or sister to goof around with. He is about a year old, 60 pounds, a pit bull terrier mix and already neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and heartworm negative. His adoption fee has been SPONSORED so he is free to adopt to an approved adopter. If forever isn't in the cards for you, he would also REALLY benefit from a foster home. 📣📣📣 TONGUE OUT TUESDAY ADOPTION UPDATE! 📣📣📣 "Daisy quickly made her personality known and took on the name Gertrude, or Gerty. She is also affectionately called Flirty Gerty as she has a way with charming every one that she meets, immediately. On adoption day Gertrude came home to meet her new BFF and adventure pal, Walter. They became fast friends and cuddle buddies. Walter has always been a timid guy, but his new sister really brought him out of his shell - and even helped him get over his fear of swimming! Gert is actually an award-winning competitive swimmer in the Upstream Stick Retrieval division. We’re the ones giving out the awards but believe that they are still noteworthy. Her favorite swimming spot is Boy Scouts on the Comal, but she hasn’t met a body of water that she hasn’t enjoyed yet. At the age of four, Gertrude moved to live at the base of Mount Rainier where she explored her way through acres upon acres of National forest. She has corralled elk, made friends with sheep and their lambs, but is still quite anti-cat (we know, we know, but not everyone is perfect). Most recently Gerty has taken on Oregon and has made quite the impression on the west coast. Her underbite is as vast and impressive as the Pacific Ocean, making her smile a truly magnificent sight to behold. She is SO loved, and we wish we could clone her. We hope that her littermates that we met, Pongo and Diamond, are just as happy and getting to explore and swim as much as our little goober.
