I applied for EAA Women Soar You Sour program for Oshkosh 2014 and I was accepted. My dad and I packed up my Explorer and hit the road jamming out to the Top Gun album. When we pulled up to Wittman Regional for the first time, I felt something like amusement park vibes. Navigating to our camping spot, passing the endless rows of airplanes, reading the aviation billboards, watching to the buzzing Airshow overhead, enthusiasts just like us everywhere… it was a wonderland! I felt bad leaving my dad on Monday at the camping tent but I adjusted to my shocking new environment… girls my age just as obsessed with airplanes as me?! All in one place. It was something I never had before. Up to this point it had always been just me and the old guys at the airport. The best part was our amazing mentors who guided us through the Oshkosh maze, answered our countless questions, and shared their knowledge and experience enthusiastically. @rihnharvey Debby Rihn-Harvey, brendahagoodlea Brenda Hagood Lea, @cindyhasselbring Cindy Hasselbring, and many more played a large role in my aviation beginnings and still do today! Throughout the week we were able to meet the WASPS, fly in the Ford Trimotor, see most of the exhibits, and explore options for aviation colleges. My cousin graduated from Liberty University and I had attended College for a Weekend to check out their aviation program, so I gravitated towards their tent throughout the week. I had no plan for how I’d continue my training or how I’d ever pay for college. Thankfully, the team had taken a liking to me and picked up on my deep desire to attend and fly, as I would soon come to find out unexpectedly…
I’m working on my last exhibition @wearedarts before my maternity leave begins (another little project I’ve been quietly working!) it’s called ‘The Pollinators’ and explores the role of our tiny but mighty insects that are vital to the eco system and help produce so much of our food and flora. The exhibition is centred around early years children so it’s colourful, tactile and sensory, and the work was developed with community groups (youngest participant 11 weeks old!) so it’s been a lovely way to ‘bow out’ for a little while with an exhibition focusing on little ones. The flowers in this picture were picked by my Mum from her beautiful garden, and my paper pollinators feel quite at home! It’s making me think about motherhood and the beautiful gift my Mum gave me in connecting me with nature; a childhood spent being encouraged to pick up rocks, learn the names of flowers, the calls of birds, to see the awe in nature, and how this is surely the greatest gift we can give children - connecting them to this beautiful planet and our role in protecting, nourishing and learning about all the beings we share it with. THIS WASP IS THE REASON I'M FREAKING OUT. So, as you all know, I GO APE SHIT OVER WASPS. ESPECIALLY THE REALLY WEIRD ONES. This one here I noticed nearby some Phacelia, and at first just assumed they were a Yellow Jacket, but I was still interested in taking a photo despite having taken a ton of them before. Then, as I began to notice their flight patterns, and that their body shape seemed to differ from Yellow Jackets, I realized something was off. Then, I can't tell you what tipped me off exactly, but I remembered that Pollen Wasps exist, and immediately my hands started shaking with excitement! There were two, but I only got pictures of this individual. They seemed to be following eachother along the fields of Scorpionweeds, and were gone as soon as they arrived. I sat in that moment for a while because I couldn't believe what I just saw. If you swipe to the second slide, THAT is a photo of the nests they make out of mud. See, I took that photo in 2021, years ago, and it was later identified as a Pollen Wasp nest, which introduced me to these wasps for the first time. Since then, I've always hoped I'd see one. AND TODAY WAS THE MOTHERFUCKING DAYYYYY. LOOK, these are REALLY COOL, because they're still wasps in the Paper Wasps, Yellow Jackets, and Potter Wasps family, but these are solitary, not social. They build mud nests like some other wasps, but they provision their larvae with NECTAR AND POLLEN, LIKE BEES! THEY AREN'T BEES THOUGH, THEY JUST POSSESS PRETTY MUCH IDENTICAL METHODS TO SAY, A MASON BEE! Turns out, they can be distinguished by their stubby, clubbed antennae! They're also seemingly more stout, cylindrical even, than your typical social wasp. I'M SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS ANIMAL, IT'S INSANE TO ME THAT DESPITE BEES HAVING BRANCHED OFF FROM THE WASP LINEAGE, THERE ARE STILL EITHER REMNANTS OR CONVERGENT SPECIES STILL ALIVE TODAY. ON TOP OF THAT, MUCH LIKE THIS INVERSE BEHAVIOR, THERE ARE BEES THAT HUNT OTHER BEES, LIKE MOST WASPS DO! (Such as the Beewolf)

La verdad son muy pocas las avispas de este género que eh podido fotografiar principalmente porque las encuentro de día y se mueven súper rápido al nivel del suelo buscando tarántulas para cazar, esta belleza me la encontré de noche y por eso le pude tomar una foto.
