Trying a new layout for Echo’s enclosure 🌱 I like to redesign all my reptiles’ enclosures about once every month or two, just to keep things interesting for them. They’re always eager to explore new hiding places or basking areas ☀️ I do always keep the locations of their warm hide and cool hide relatively the same though. As well as always keeping the water bowl in the middle. Also! She has yet to kill the little pothos cutting I planted a while back. This 7,5ft., 7kg baby is still one of my calmest, friendliest kids in the room. She might look intimidating at first but she's just a puppy. And that's what I love about imperators. It's that if You handle them regularly from an early age, there's only a very very tiny chance to raise a psycho. They're normally just chill lap dogs and I can't recommend them enough. But I also used to not recommend them at all. I feel like they're one of the most mistreated larger snakes kept in captivity. They're considered hardy and easy, and normals are very cheap which makes them a fast choice for someone too lazy to do proper research. This is a huge heavy animal that could live in their 30's and not enough new keepers even think about the lifespan and the long commitment. They're also only hardy IF You keep them right 🤷 I've had quite a lot of experience with common boas (and other boas) and they're easy peasy as long as the temps and humidity are correct. They can be forgiving to mistakes but once the visible damage has been done, it's not easy to reverse it or reverse it at all. Also, feeding. I go through groups every day and while there can be a lot different ways to raise a boa right, overfeeding is not one of them. It baffles me how many people feed adults biweekly, or WEEKLY (*faints in horror*). These animals SHOULD live on pretty minimal food intake. One proper sized meal once a month is more than enough and there are enough studies to back that up, it's not starving them, it's actually making them live longer. Unless yeah, the 30 year commitment is too long and most are fine with an obese snake that might not even reach 12. The ignoring or even hating on normals is also another way of mistreating these awesome animals. It's either something that looks the opposite of what the wild type should look like or no one wants it. New boa imperator girl! My first columbian boa in many years. I have more space for snakes now, and have really missed having this locality/species. This beauty is a pastel dream ghost poss. Jungle 100% het for sharp albino (a.k.a. Ivory Ghost) produced by @enochian_exotics . You can find his quality boas on morphmarket, including her siblings. I have a boa with a red tail, and have wanted one with a purple tail as a contrasting counterpart. Having no reds or bright color, she stands in sharp contrast to the rest of my snakes. With the pastel dream and hopefully jungle influence she will age beautifully. Not sure at this time if I will ever breed her. I may decide to pair her to my male Suriname boa or obtain a male boa imperator. I would like to produce some snowglow stuff with pastel dream. The pic has nothing to do with what I'm about to say. But maybe it's time we all collectively start noticing the bigger picture and stop worshipping youtubers and big scale breeders?...my most hated arguments are "but they did so much for the hobby", "but if it weren't for them, we wouldn't have so many morphs available"(maybe, just maybe that would be a good thing...🤷), "they are in it for the animals and they genuinely love them", "they educated so many people"...etc. and all of this, but at what cost? Throughout many years in the hobby, so many times I cringed hearing people talk about how they got into snakes because they were watching exhibit a, b, c...and if You'd ask those people if they saw anything wrong in those videos, they'd have no clue. It's easier to learn something new than to unlearn what You already know. Hence why a lot of people don't care that many morphs come with defects, eyeless snakes are cute, blind animals are cute, wobbles are cute and getting one almost qualifies as rescuing (🤮). Small racks, no enrichment, poops, stuck sheds, mites, overbred females, egg cutting at a very early stage, multiple "educational" zoos with subpar keeping conditions are the new normal and no one bats an eye. "But they do it for the love". Sure, the love of money. Lots of those people went in there for the passion and stayed for cash. And it's obvious when You compare their first videos and last. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with making it a business if You're good at it, but people are so blindsided by their favourite creators "exploding charisma" that they just don't see many of them treat animals like tools to make money. So maybe, idk, maybe stop patreoning breeders who already make millions out of their neglected animals, or think twice before buying from a "big name", maybe then You wouldn't need to complain in fb groups about mites, RIs, sick animals or something opposite from what You ordered.
