Spatialism was an attempt to synthesize color, sound, space, and time into one visual composition. Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), an Argentinian-Italian artist, was the founder and driving force behind this movement. Spatialism’s inception started with the publishing of Fontana’s manifesto, “Manifesto Blanco”, that documented what shape art would take post World War II. Spatialism sought to create a marriage between science and art, blending them into a cohesive unit. Fontana stretched the boundaries of what spacial art could be by forcing three-dimensionality within his compositions. He is one of the first artists to intentionally slash his own work, adding effect and dynamism. He forces the viewers to witness the space as something that they are a part of. Fontana was one of the pioneering artists in performance art– art that declared that its creative progression was the art itself. Fontana frequently revisited his idea of “Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept)” by creating different renditions, titled similarly. In the variation above, “Concetto Spaziale, Attese (Spatial Concept, Expectations)”, the spatial concept manifests itself into a pure white canvas that has been ripped apart and permanently soiled by the sharp, black slashes. The cause of the slashes is unknown– the slashes themselves are ambiguous. Fontana was the only artist to work with spatialism in mind, although modern appropriations have been made, including a sub-genre entitled “Cyber-Spatialism”. His work is difficult to classify, as he moves between baroque, cubism and futurism, after an early career linked to the academia. From 1949 onwards he began to paint surfaces in monochrome (a single colour) and “mistreat” the canvases. He first began by making holes, then incisions from 1958 onwards, razors! This is the first time that an artist, in the History of Art, “ attacks” the surface of the canvas. Fontana introduces the notion of space, of depth, into his work. . . Assassinato em nome da Arte! 'Lucio Fontana: Spatial Concept', curated by KoRICA (Korean Research Institute of Contemporary Art) in collaboration with Fondazione Lucio Fontana, and sponsored by the Embassy of Italy in Seoul and @iicseoul. The exhibition will be hosted by the @sorolartmuseum, a new museum in Gangneung, designed by Meier Partners studio, which launches its programming with this very exhibition. The project, the first major monographic exhibition held in South Korea, focuses on Fontana's Spatialist research, emphasizing the topicality of his poetics. A selection of works belonging to our collection and six Spatial Environments will allow a new audience to learn about and experience the research of this 20th century master. “I do not want to make a painting; I want to open up space, create a new dimension, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture.” – Lucio Fontana — In 1958, Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) began his signature knife-slashes, or Tagli. Each cut was made with a single gesture using a sharp blade, and the canvases were then backed with strong black gauze giving the appearance of a void behind. Fontana’s greatest experimentation with the format of the Tagli paintings occurred in 1959. Executed in 1959, Fontana’s “Concetto Spaziale, Attese,” on view in Acquavella New York, is one of only four pictures, all the same size, where the artist evocatively used pastel to create a lyrical, atmospheric backdrop for his dramatic slashes. A rhythmic sequence of ten evocative tagli are set against the shimmering silver canvas, their movement echoing the expressive drawing on the bottom register of the painting. For Fontana, the tagli that puncture the canvas created a perpetual space that would continue to exist despite the passage of time, a tribute to the world of science post-Einstein.
