Corn is tasseled and 8’-9’ tall with most stalks having 2 ears getting ready to pollinate. The double rows of soybeans are waist high between the double rows of corn. Albino corn, who would have known. Out of all the corn we've planted over the years, never have we come across an albino! It's not super cool because it will eventually die, but the genetics behind it sure are interesting! Albino corn is rare in nature due to its double recessive genotype. Both parents have to be heterozygous (carrying both dominant and recessive alleles for chlorophyll production gene) for this cross to happen. If one parent is homozygous dominant, the recessive gene can still pass onto the offspring, but the albino phenotype will not show in the next generation. With two heterozygous parents, the chances of a double recessive offspring are 25%. My assumption is that most corn plants carry dominant genes for chlorophyll production, as the albino trait simply leaves the plant unable to grow past the initial energy contained in the kernel. I get a lot of questions about corn interplanted with soybeans. It is hands down my favorite warm season annual. If I had to list one negative point about the two interplanted together it would be that you can’t mow it down where legal without shattering the beans. Knocking it down is my preferred method and it works perfect for the soybeans without shattering the pods. The 🚁 made its appearance today. We’ve been waiting a week for it to show up to apply fungicide on the corn. Given the height of the corn and when the fungicide needs to be applied an application via helicopter or plane is the best option. The fungicide helps keep the corn plant healthy for longer in the growing season which usually adds weight to the corn kernels. What do we have here?? Clearly, a bag of plot seed, but what kind of seed? We get to have a plot of Bayer's Short Stature corn! Ok, but what is short corn? Well...it's corn, but short. Why do we care about short corn? It helps add flexibly to things like late-season applications and of course is less likely to take wind damage. With a height of around 7 ft or less vs the traditional corn plant height of 9-12 ft it is less susceptible to green snap or other wind damage. As our climate continues to change, we want to be prepared for the challenges that Mother Nature decides to throw at us. More frequent and intense windstorms seem to be one of those challenges, and this short corn may be a key in helping us navigate that particular challenge. The idea behind putting a plot in is to learn about things we don’t see often, or try new ideas on a smaller scale before taking it to a big field. Plots are typically put in by a farm trying to figure out their plan for next year or a genetic company trying to learn more about their current & future products! Corns are a growing! Took the pest covers off since I haven’t seen the raccoons in about a week, and they tend to be afraid of the stalks. These are early sunglow corn so they are made to be grown in the colder conditions of late winter and early spring.
