My favourite cosmic Americana playing troubadours, The Hanging Stars, were excellent last night in Norwich. The new album is fairly mellow, but the songs really came to life on stage. They kicked off with the lead track, Let Me Dream of You, which had a real Stonesy swagger to it and then played around half of the new songs, along with several older favourites interspersed, to switch up the mood. The band's playing was tight and the sound was spot on. London-based The Hanging Stars are a group of Brits making cosmic country inspired by the likes of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. They released a great new album called On A Golden Shore on March 8th. Along with the previously mentioned influences, the group has hints of Allah-Las, Mojave 3, Kurt Vile, and a “countrified” Lou Reed. That’s a cool blend there. The Hanging Stars recently spent some time in Nashville at Americanafest, and this new album is their fifth full-length release. They say it’s an onslaught of blissed-out electric guitars and wide-screen pedal steel, drawing on inspiration from the dying embers of the early Seventies psych-folk scene.
