Another week, another album review! And this week, it was @coldwarkids' 2019 album, New Age Norms 1 that I had the pleasure of listening to! While the artist is relatively new to me, the sound and style of the music is one that I am kinda familiar with, but definitely something that I overall liked even if there were no real standouts. But as I stated in the last slide, it actually works out in favor of the album, because I couldn't really decide a 'favorite' as they were all pretty equal. There were moments that I heard similarities with music from The Black Keys (whom are also an indie/blues rock band), which is a band whose music I am a very big fan of, and even a little bit The Revivalists as well. I will look out for some more music by Cold War Kids, if this album is any indication of the rest of their discography, then it sounds like it is right up my alley! Klô Pelgag - L'alchimie des Monstres (2013 - singer-songwriter, art pop, chamber folk, chamber pop, nouvelle chanson française, baroque pop) "A grass-coated beast whose best friend is a tiny sprite" In the summer of 2020, when there was nothing to do but lounge about in a post-graduation haze of alternating fun and sadness, my brother and I spent a day marathoning random movies from my long and varied to-do list. One of the first films we encountered during this deep dive was Ma vie de Courgette, a French production otherwise identified by the title My Life as a Zucchini on our American streaming platforms. It was a little bit of a slice of life, especially considering the stop-motion puppetry of each character and backdrop, but I found the overall aesthetic of the picture far more captivating and memorable than its story. It's been years since that experience, but the visuals of that quirky yet thoughtful movie remains pleasantly stuck in my mind. The work of Klô Pelgag is sort of the musical equivalent to this kind of cinematic eccentricity. The French-Canadian singer-songwriter sifts through orchestral atmospheres to initiate miniature scenes of simple but dreamy-eyed poetry, her every move not unlike those of the clouds and buildings in an animated movie's homemade world. L'alchimie des Monstres sets up bunting flags and decorative clotheslines for a festival of friendly fascination, its forty-eight minute event time lending just enough extra imagination to its audiences to invite them into Pelgag's own mind. Her lyrics, written in French but sung with universal finesse, are descriptive in a straightforward and physical way. Atop a bed of chamber pop and woolly folk, this artist's anecdotes might as well be animated, and her stringed instruments might as well link to puppet mascots. L'alchimie des Monstres and Ma vie de Courgette have nothing to do with one another in real life, but the moods of both French-speaking creative productions could not be more playfully alike. Klô Pelgag's debut album winds up art pop's jack-in-the-box until a little marionette clone comes out to serenade the crowd. She would only discover more colors and toys from here. ★★★½

Odyssey | Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, 1988 (Polydor, AU, '88) Too often accused of technique over songwriting, it must be said that on Odyssey, Yngwie does try to make a collection of solos into a credible group of songs with tunes and themes. The moody acoustic bookending for 'Dreaming (Tell Me)', for example, points toward genuine efforts to conjure a mood. Despite some appalling lyrics, 'Deja Vu' has a genuinely catchy riff that converges with late 80s Megadeth, while 'Crystal Ball' is more-Dokken-than-Dokken (JL Turner is literally wrapped in chains). The focus on songs is not always successful, and on some songs (eg 'Riot in the Dungeons') I'm just waiting for the solos to take off. But that's always the case in the land of Malmsteen... Did I need this shred-fest? Probably not. But does it wail? Yes it does. #346 Mi Sangre 9.06/10 Juanes - 2004 - Rock - 🇨🇴 Nada que se pueda escribir sobre esta joya de la música latinoamericana le va a hacer justicia. Juanes nos deleitaba con su tercer álbum de estudio allá por el principio del milenio cuando la música latina era una carrera de ver quien pegaba la mayor cantidad de sencillos, la música era menos desechable. Todo el álbum está hecho de las ya conocidas baladas bajo un ritmo de rock suave, al estilo de Juanes. Me gusta porque es rock en su mayoría acústico, si bien su punto fuerte no es la música, sino más bien las letras, no quiere decir que se descuide la música, hay varios riffs de guitarra bien memorables y varias melodías que se hicieron populares hasta el día de hoy. Las letras, como de costumbre, hablan de amor en su mayoría, algunas más que amor son simplemente sugerentes y tiene ciertos chispazos de conciencia social como en la canción de protesta “Sueños”, lo cierto es que independientemente del tema, las letras son muy pegajosas y realmente están bien escritas. Hay pocos álbumes tan icónicos como este, tiene una energía muy relajada pero en el buen sentido, derrocha talento y coloca a Juanes como uno de los artistas latinos más importantes de la historia. I've been listening to this album over and over again. I've become a huge Bladee fan over the years and I have to say, at first I didn't understand the overwhelmingly positive opinion everyone had about it, but the more listened to it, the more I realized that my opinion hadn't really changed. That being said, I loved it, just not giving it the "10/10 perfect score" that every other fan seems to be initially giving it. It's a long album, and I wanted to give all the songs a ranking because I didn't hate any of them and had an opinion on all of them. I think it's one of DG's best albums in at least the past 4 years. The production on the album is very good, it's not my favorite, but it's unique and fresh all the same. DILLOM - Por cesárea: Post Mortem había dejado la vara altísima pero Dillom no la elevó, la destrozó totalmente con este trabajo, mucho más maduro y superador en todos los aspectos. Es un disco muy oscuro, dónde si bien no puedo asegurar que sea conceptual, se nota que hay una temática común dónde encarna un personaje cargado de traumas y agresividad hacia él mismo y los demás, acompañado de bases al tono, mucho mas sombrías, fuertes y por momentos mas orgánicas. Funciona además porque dentro de esa oscuridad hay una variedad de géneros muy grande, no se centra mucho en el trap sino que hay un rap mas clásico y agresivo con influencias muy claras de rock, punk-pop, D&B y hasta funk. Está mas cerca de sonar como Deftones o los primeros RHCP que como Post Mortem (y que lo lloren los gordos rockeros). En lo lírico creo que da un salto muy importante, ya que toca temas mucho mas delicados con una solvencia y contundencia geniales en las barras, sino que incluso los chistes y punchlines están mucho mas afinados cuando se da la oportunidad no tomarse tan en serio. Además está muy bien arreglado, porque se esperaban riffs y rulos de batería presentes (shoutout al gringo) pero lo que sorprende realmente son los arreglos de cuerdas y sintetizadores que acompañan casi todo el álbum y le dan una profundidad sonora y emocional tremenda. Además la producción es excelente, con el uso justo de efectos como el autotune para enmascarar errores puntuales, o el sidechain y los filtros en voces como la de La Carie que sumado a los interludios le dan mucho mas contexto al álbum. In this time, the literary work's area of expertise had been revolutionized time and time again by researchers, inventors, and so on. But Jeff Wayne was the only one to take on its personality, its sense of adventure and boundless curiosity. The ensuing theatrical audiobook-esque LP is nothing shy of unparalleled, its all-star cast second only to its cosmic spouts of disco and prog. Even more cinematic than most films, this is ninety minutes well spent. A rigidly faithful adaptation of an iconic novel's neverending relevance, Jeff Wayne's take on The War of the Worlds exists in a space just slightly separated from H. G. Wells' initial brushstroke of genius. An audience member need not experience one of the two takes on the story before the other, nor do they need to pair them up at any point. The original edition may have nailed its futuristic tone and blazed the trail for science fiction to eventually become science fact, but this generation-defining rock opera interpretation of The War of the Worlds is special in a ridiculously well-organized way. With this album oozing through the speakers like the aliens it so beautifully describes, one can almost picture the civilization of another planet. ★★★★½
ALBUM REVIEW: Released 30 years ago today - Anotha Level’s debut album “On Anotha Level,” a very dope but overlooked LP from 1994, filled with smooth, laidback beats and funky, skilfull rhymes. Then look no further than 1994’s On Anotha Level. The perfect soundtrack to all of the above, this album bucked many of the West Coast gangster rap stereotypes with its playful, party-orientated sound and subject matter. Discovered by Ice Cube – who executively produced and featured on the album – LA’s Anotha Level were strictly on the hittin’ skins, smoking blunts, bugging out, and coolin’ in Cali tip. OK, Bambino, Ced Twice, Stenge, Stix, and Stones aren’t exactly what you’d class as upper-echelon MCs. Stenge sounds uncannily like Imani from The Pharcyde (who feature on the final track and album highlight “Phat-T”) – but they can definitely spit. Just don’t expect to hear anything deep and meaningful on this record. By and large, this is an album full of flavour by five emcees simply having fun with it – capturing the vibe of long, hot summer days and good times in the City of Angels. Every song on here is so incredibly written, and the album has so much versatility, and replay value. You want heavy stuff? This album has it. You want soft stuff? This album has it. You want smth in the middle? This album has it. The whole album has everything you could possibly want in a Metal record, and it holds nothing back at any point. Nothing here is filler, every instrument sounds EXTREMELY tight, and this (imo) is Ryan’s best vocal delivery. The solos are incredible, the breakdowns are crushing, the chorus’s are catchy and memorable, and the whole record Is just extremely fun. I feel that DH took a risk on this record with more synth stuff, but it paved the way for the rest of their catalogue (imo), and it definitely payed off, even if it has some of the most underrated DH tracks (Beyond Me). Spawn Review: Genres: Improvised Grindcore, Noisecore Year of Release: 2013 Rating: 6.1/10 Favorites: Distortion, Wristwatch Type Equipment “Visceral Tavern” Sete Star Sept is a Japanese Noisegrind band that consists of two members, Kae Takahashi on Vocals/Bass and Ryosuke Kiyasu on Drums. Both members utilize the art of improvisation as a key factor on this LP. Which turns into mayhem not even less than 10 seconds in, and considering the brevity of Grindcore, the short songs on side A are quite messy. Before anyone says it, I know that Grindcore is built on excessively short tracks, but that brings down the style of what I can call “Improvised Grindcore”. The sheer amount of pick and go tracks that leave more than necessary are great, but the instant that a track that has gone by and nothing was left, thereby leaving the listener just continuing to listen is kind of annoying. The first few tracks are great by a very low standard, but hence the continued pace of the album, they have me going for more. Kiyasu’s style of drum improvisation is more noisy than an actual rhythm, but assuming the style that is played, I give it a pass; Considering than Kiyasu has been touring with an over the top, avant-garde style playing of a snare drum, nothing is stranger than this. Kae’s approach is of distorted bass, and what I can tell is intelligible screeching, and growling, which is fine, but rest assured that it’s more of another element passing by. The track that had at least a progression, and is kind of nice, has to be the penultimate track, Distortion. This song is filth, nothing more than filth. (Continued in the comments)

En la oficina hay unas cajas con galletas de Costco que, por razones que no importan, no puedo consumir, y me estoy muriendo por ello, siento que las puedo oler a través de la caja de plástico, puedo sentir la textura en mi boca y la voz aguda de las chispas cantando en mi oído: “cómenos, cómenos a todas, ignora lo demás, somos la solución a todo lo que te acongoja, ¡oh Dios mío, sácanos de la miseria de vivir encerradas, que la libertad de tu antojo sea la libertad de todas las chispas y galletas del mundo!” Hablando de ello, Simz se aprovecha de la libertad que le da este proyectito, se anima a dejar a un lado la gran conceptualidad de sus últimos larga duración para presentarse en ritmos más bailables, entiendo que puede ser algo que aleje a quienes quieren más de su faceta seria, pero si algo prueba este lanzamiento es el enorme talento que Little Simz se carga, no todas las canciones me gustan y el aporte de algunas es nulo para la artista por su corta duración o falta de desarrollo, y aún así logra mantenerse consistente en su habilidad vocal e interpretativa, no solo se adapta a los diferentes ritmos sino que los hace suyos, y vale la pena su escucha por este testamento de sus habilidades. Quién sabe, chance esta es una probadita de lo que vendrá o una simple desviación, sea como sea, podemos estar tranquilos pues el talento de la artista sigue tan alto como en sus obras pasadas. Deep Lyrics with a bit of an 80‘s sound to it. This Album feels very nostalgic and also modern in it‘s own way. A track that really stood out to me was „Garden Life“. It‘s really beautifully written. It captures a bit of overthinking - because it shows that whilst your happy and loving life - you can still worry about the future and what comes with it. 🦋 Another track that I really love is Benny. The instrumentals here make it really addicting. I just want to have it on repeat.☺️ I feel that this is going to be an comfort album for me. I just love the vibes I get from it. When I listen to it I feel like I’m in a little bubble 🫧 I just wish there were more songs.
