The Kalam Cosmological Argument is a central and easy to remember argument for the existence of God. There are many arguments we could marshal to give evidence of the existence of God. There is scientific evidence pointing to God’s existence. For example, whatever is in motion must be moved by another, for motion is the response of matter to power. In the world of matter there can be no power without life, and life pre-supposes a being from which emanates the power to move things, such as tides and the planets. Or there is the argument that says nothing can be the cause of itself. It would be prior to itself if it caused itself to be, and that is an absurdity. Then there is the law of life. We see objects that have no intellect, such as stars and planets, moving in a consistent pattern, cooperating ingeniously with one another. Hence, it is evident that they achieve their movements not by accident but by design. Whatever lacks intelligence cannot move intelligently. An arrow would be useless without a bow and an archer. What gives direction and purpose and design to inanimate objects? It is God. Aquinas’ third way is known as the contingency argument or the cosmological argument. This argument begins by stating that there are contingent beings and necessary beings. Contingent beings attribute their existence to something else and have the property of existing or also not existing without effecting the rest of existence. Necessary beings are things like mathematical laws, or truth itself. If there was a time when each contingent being didn’t exist, we could in theory, go back in time far enough when nothing existed. If there was a time when nothing existed then a contingent being could not be the cause of another contingent being because, well, there would be no contingent being in order to give rise to another. This would mean that there would have to be a necessary being who’s existence is self sustained and not contingent who is the cause of all contingent beings, God. An objection to this argument would be that there could be multiple necessary beings that caused contingent beings. A refutation to that objection would be that if there were multiple causes than the world would lack a unified coherent and orderly structure because the multiplicity of necessary beings would exist independently of each other and therefore possess its own being completely and totally wholly other from one another. Yet we don’t see that in the world. Been reading Samuel Clarke’s A Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God. Came to know of him from Leibniz and Hume as a defender of Newtonian physics and a novel cosmological argument from the principle of causality. Basically everything that exists must have a cause and can’t come from nothing so either must come from an infinite regress of finite beings or an infinite being, but an infinite series of dependent beings could not be the cause of itself and so depends on the existence of a being which is the necessary cause of itself. Ends up incorporating aspects of the ontological argument not from definition but from notions of existence and causality.
