"The Holy Author persistently teaches that faith is the proper means of union [with God]." (Rev. Karol Wojtyła, The Issue of Faith in the Works of St. John of the Cross, 1948) According to Wojtyła, the teachings of St. John of the Cross become more understandable when placed in a specific historical context. On this basis, his doctoral thesis showed that the work of the Mystical Doctor was first directed "against erroneous tendencies [of the era] in striving for direct union with God." Their authors were the so-called "alumbrados" (Spanish: the enlightened). Based on the works of the Carmelite-Sanjuanists Father Chrysogonus of the Sacramental Jesus, Father Bruno of Jesus-Mary, and Father Louis of the Holy Trinity (all published in 1929), Fr. Wojtyła characterized the mystical doctrine of the "enlightened" as wrongly proposing a union with God as being: - "all visions and revelations", - "a desire for the felt tastes of grace" (Polutheran legacy), - "seeking salvation in faith-trust [unanimated by works of love] (a distortion of the message of Rhenish mysticism). Wojtyła put forward the means of uniting the soul with God, promoted by Saint John of the Cross, against such erroneous tendencies of Christian spirituality. These means feature "faith with all its consequences": - "complete self-emptying", - "austerity", - "obedience of the mind". Interesting fact: St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) also wrote about faith as a means of union with God in "The Science of the Cross". We encourage you to support the Discalced Carmelites Publishing House in publishing its next volumes in Polish as part of the project: "Give your voice to Edyta Stein" (https://wkb-krakow.pl/produkt/oddaj-glos-edycie-stein/). #stjohnofthecross #wojtyla #wojtyla #karolwojtyla #karolwojtyła #popejohnpaulii #johnpaulii #janpawel2 #janpawełii #ethics #faith #thomism

“O God, Who didst enlighten Thy Church with the wondrous learning of blessed Thomas, Thy Confessor, and didst enrich Her through his holy life, grant us, we beseech Thee, both to understand what he taught and, by following his example, to do what he did.” –Collect for the Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, Missale Romanum of 1962 Pictured: The skull of St. Thomas Aquinas, which was one of many parts separated from the Angelic Doctor’s body by the Cistercian monks of Fossanova Abbey, who sought to protect the saint’s remains from being stolen following his death at the abbey in 1274; this skull, together with a number of St. Thomas’ other relics, were relocated from Fossanova Abbey to the Dominican Monastery and Church of the Jacobins in Toulouse, France, where they were venerated until the outbreak of the French Revolution, during which they were protected at the church of St. Sernin. . Thomas Aquinas died 750 years ago today! Saint of the Day March 7th . Thomas attended the University of Naples where he encountered the philosophies that later informed his writing: Greek - Aristotle, Islamic - Averroes and Jewish - Maimonides. He endeavoured to reconcile their theories on logic with his Christian ideology but couldn’t agree with Aristotle’s idea of beginninglessness in the universe. He decided to join the Dominican Order but his family did not approve and grounded him. His brothers arranged for a courtesan to visit him and show him what’s what but Thomas drove her away with a burning log. Spoilsport angels helped to strengthen his resolve to stay celibate. After a year, he was released from his confinement and travelled around the important centres of learning, mixing with living philosophers and future saints. Although Thomas was so shy that people presumed he was stupid, he wrote numerous key works of theology. He later dismissed his writings as worthless straw and devoted himself to praying and weeping and occasionally levitating. While riding on his donkey along the Appian Way, he hit his head on a tree branch and never recovered, dying on 7th March 1274, exactly 750 years ago today. His writings are still influential, his aesthetic theories affecting James Joyce and Umberto Eco. He insisted that the beautiful must possess Integritas (wholeness), Consonantia (proportionality) and Claritas (radiance). ~ Visit @lamplifeboatladder to see Thomas, helped by two angels, resisting a good looking devil-woman. . #March7 #thomasaquinas #aristotle #averroes #maimonides #thomism #aesthetics #jamesjoyce #umbertoeco #naples #appianway #theology #philosophy #temptation @chriskenny.art www.chriskenny.co.uk

"The Essentials of the Philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas" is a lecture based on the famous 24 Thomistic theses published by a group of Thomists in 1916. After distinguishing Thomism from the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, individual theses are discussed, starting with the ontological ones. Each of these theses was formulated using basic Thomistic concepts - the definitions, varieties, and application of which are found in the system of the saint's philosophy. We are trying to explain St. Thomas. This procedure is carried out slowly, with a great emphasis on the student's understanding of the problem. In the background of the lecture, there is also a discussion on the possible application of Thomistic philosophy to contemporary philosophical problems. #CourseSpotlight #philosophy #Ethics #religion #philosopher #philosophicalthoughts #StThomasAquinas #Thomism #study #studying #studentlife #academia #AcademicSuccess #academics #learn #LearningJourney

St. Thomas Aquinas on the Natural Law: According to St. Thomas, “the natural law is nothing else than the rational creature’s participation of the eternal law.” (Q. 91; Article II Prima Secundæ Partis) “Every act of reason and will in us is based on that which is according to nature,… for every act of reasoning is based on principles that are known naturally, and every act of appetite in respect of the means is derived from the natural appetite in respect of the last end. Accordingly the first direction of our acts to their end must needs be in virtue of the natural law.“ (Q. 91; Article II Reply 2 Prima Secundæ Partis) “Even irrational animals partake in their own way of the Eternal Reason, just as the rational creature does. But because the rational creature partakes thereof in an intellectual and rational manner, therefore the participation of the eternal law in the rational creature is properly called a law, since a law is something pertaining to reason… Irrational creatures, however, do not partake thereof in a rational manner, wherefore there is no participation of the eternal law in them, except by way of similitude.“ (Q. 91; Article II Reply 3 Prima Secundæ Partis) #catholic #stthomasaquinas #favoritesaints #patronsaints #summatheologiae #primasecunda #naturallaw #lawofnature #theology #godthecreator #saotomasdeaquino #santomasdeaquino #theologian #philosophy #naturalscience #doctorofthecatholicchurch #angelicdoctor #dumbox #aquinas #staquino #thomasaquinas #thomistic #thomistictheology #romancatholic #romancatholicism #holycatholicchurch #onetruecatholicandapostolicfaith #oneholycatholicandapostolicchurch #thomism

HE WHO IS now available: This Angelico Press edition contains a new foreword by The Rev. Dr. Robert MacSwain, who writes that “I can think of at least three reasons why He Who Is should still be read by a new generation of theological students. First, despite its age, it remains a substantial contribution to the study of Thomism. Second, its primary themes of the existence and nature of God are of perennial and vital interest. Third, it exemplifies the ecumenical endeavor that was at the heart of Eric Mascall’s life and work, namely, that of an Anglican theologian seeking to learn not only from members of his own communion but from Roman Catholic and Protestant thinkers and from the Orthodox tradition as well.” See our bio for link to SHOP NOW. #thomism #aquinas #theism #reprints #angelicopress

Dueling Books. In an age of people talking past one another or yelling at each other, we look at both sides of a topic in an attempt to gain better insight and knowledge. In December, we continue our look at Integralism by now taking up the Con side. Dr. Kevin Vallier has kindly accepted my request to do a Q&A. We will have one or two group discussions (all via video chat) before the Q&A. We read *Integralism* by Dr. Alan Fimister and Father Thomas Crean OP in November. Dr. Fimister joined us for a Q&A last week. We will be meeting with Father Crean in January. If this topic interests you, and you would like to participate with Dr. Vallier, send me a message or comment here. #DuelingBooks #NowReading #catholic #Integralism #kevinvallier #alanfimister #thomascrean #politicaltheory #politicalphilosophy #thomism #thomasaquinas

Argument from Contingency, Possibility and Change part 4: The other option is all possible states have an essence which would entail that they all exist simultaneously which also entails contradiction e.g the cup of coffee would be simultaneously boiling hot and not boiling hot and frozen and evaporated simultaneously since all these states are possible states and possible states have an essence. To have them simultaneously instantiated as you see, would entail a contradiction and is therefore impossible. To put it in a syllogism: P1 if essence and existence were identical or existence was a part of essence, then anything with an essence would exist necessarily P2 a state of a being has an essence C a state of a being would exist necessarily Then: P1 change requires a potential state to come into existence and the formerly actual state to cease existing P2 a necessary state of being in a thing is unable to cease existing or to come into existence C a necessary state of being in a thing makes the thing unable to change Or P1 if essence and existence were identical or existence was a part of essence, then anything with an essence would exist necessarily P2 contradicting possible states of a thing have an essence  C contradicting possible states of a thing would exist necessarily  Then: P1 necessary states always exist and are unable to cease existing P2 the contradicting states of a thing in the former argument are necessary C the contradicting states of a thing have always existed in the thing and are unable to not exist (violation of the PNC) #catholic #catholicphilosophy #catholictheology #catholicism #theology #philosophy #aquinas #thomism #classicaltheism #apologetics

Argument from Contingency, Possibility and Change part 3: The consequences worsen. If essence and existence were identical or existence was a part of the essence, change itself would be impossible. For every possible state of a thing has an essence, a whatness, a principle of distinction or individuation that makes it the specific state it is rather than another or nothing. Possible states are essential to change because change is merely something existing, having another possible state of existence and then having that possible state become instantiated (receiving existence) whilst the former state ceases to exist.  If essence were identical to existence or existence a part of the essence, then either one state exists of necessity which would mean no other possible state could exist since the state which exists, has existence as a part of its very nature meaning that it would be unable to cease existing. This would entail contradiction if it tried to acquire a new state for change to occur e.g a cups state of being completely white and not blue exists necessarily and if it somehow acquired the state of being completely blue without any whiteness its former white state would be unable to cease because of its necessary existence and yet it has acquired an all blue state. Therefore the cup would be completely white with no blueness and completely blue with no whiteness, which is impossible as it violates the law of non contradiction. #catholicphilosophy #theology #catholictheology #catholicism #christianity #philosophy #apologetics #classicaltheism #aquinas #thomism

Argument from Contingency, Possibility and Change part 2: Same thing applies with fat monkeys, kangaroos and sponges. All such things do exist but they didn't HAVE to exist. They could have potentially not existed if the conditions were different. For example, some psychotic maniac could kill all the koalas, kangaroos and even the sponges and therefore all will cease to exist. Sure, it may sound implausible but it is possible. Even aside from that, there is no apparent reason that any of these things must exist or necessity. Infact there is opposing reason, reason against claiming their necessity such as their coming into and out of existence. Many things come into and out of existence and we ascribe this to contingency. However, if essence and existence were identical or if existence was a part of the essence, then such things would be incapable of not existing. They would necessarily exist. Infact everything would be necessary and be unable to come into or out of existence because the very nature of the things in question would include their existence. Since existence is a part of their nature/essence/definition (as definition is merely an account of the essence of something) or identical to it, to deny existence of them would amount to saying "something which has existence essentially, does not have existence". This is equivalent to denying three sidedness of triangles and we know that such a thing is impossible because triangles are by definition or nature or essence, three sided. To deny triangles as three sided would be to say "something which has three sides essentially, does not have three sides" a patent contradiction. #catholic #catholicphilosophy #catholictheology #theology #philosophy #aquinas #thomism #classicaltheism #christianity #apologetics
