I also discuss some of Dr. Jennifer Bird’s ideas concerning misogyny in the Old Testament. I kinda agree with Bird that ‘woman’ is probably, in most cases, a better translation of “אִשָּׁ֫ה„, or, transliterated: ‘ʔis͡h-s͡hấh’. • Pivot Point • ‘Pivot Points’ is a follow-up to Marvin Olasky’s ‘Lament for A Father’ which tells of Olasky’s dramatic tale of God’s saving grace as he shares his difficult relationship with his father. In this sequel, Olasky takes the reader on his journey from Atheism to Marxism, the story of a man who becomes captivated with his Lord and Saviour and goes from intellectual dissatisfaction to Christian contentment. In Olasky’s own words “this is a memoir, not an autobiography”, therefore, the focus is not on his entire life but specific moments e.g. his career in journalism, his journey from Communism to Theism to name a couple. I loved Olasky’s honesty and vulnerability throughout the book, even when it doesn’t paint him in the most glorious light. This book, like the prequel is emotional in parts and Olasky is immensely reflective as he explores his struggles. Like many of us, Olasky’s life was one full of tumultuous junctures and throughout these pivot points, he displays redemptive truths and principles that illustrate how he lived out his Christian faith in all the ups and downs, victories, and defeats. Pivot Points is a wonderful reminder of the Sovereignty of God, especially as we endure turbulent changes in our own lives. My one bit of advice would be to read the prequel ‘Lament for a Father’ in which he describes the early years of his life before reading ‘Pivot Point’. There’s a small amount of overlap but nothing too tedious. I typically don’t tend to read memoirs, however I enjoyed this and would recommend.
