Something struck me differently today than it had before. I spent last week mostly studying grace. I thought I was ready to move to a new topic this week, but then Hello @hellosaints posted a video that got me asking different questions. What is the difference between trying and surrendering? How can I do my part when my part is only possible because of Jesus Christ? Then I thought about the yoke. Once we take Christ's yoke upon us, we dont move unless both of us press forward. He isn't pushing us down the path of discipleship, and our own efforts won't move us without Him. It is both 100% possible because of Him and a joint effort. It is both surrendering to His yoke and trying to take it a step at a time, grace for grace. As with all symbols, there is a lot more to it, but this is what it taught me today. If processing trauma were easy, everyone would be doing it, and we’d all be happy! happy! all the time. As those of us who have stepped inside our trauma and walked around a bit can attest, facing painful past experiences is not for the faint of heart. And it’s not just because it’s painful and upsetting to stand inside our hard memories (although it most definitely is!). You aren’t just fighting against whatever fear, sadness, and anger your memories hold. You are also fighting against your own brain. Why? Because when we experience trauma, the human brain creates a barrier between any future experience that resembles the trauma that our brain has deemed dangerous. Some things become truth for us when they get replayed often enough. That is the power of advertisements. You are convinced that you need an extra box of cookies every time the oreo-twist-milk-dunk ad comes up. Even the truth of God can become twisted for us when bible verses are misquoted and applied out of context. The internet is a breeding ground for such errors, and each time they get forwarded or repeated in sites, people start to believe them as truths. If only we are like the Bereans. They did not take even Apostle Paul’s words lock, stock and barrel, instead they examined God’s Word for themselves to compare them with that men say before taking in the message as truth. We know from the book of Acts that as a result of their diligence in studying the Scriptures, many of them believed in God. That is a testament to faith that comes from hearing the Word of God. God Never Changes Between the year 640 to 608 BC, the prophet Zephaniah spoke to the people of Israel. He warned them of God’s judgment, but he also reminded them of God’s promise for their future. “The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17 ESV We aren’t the people of Israel in 640 BC hearing this, but, as students of God’s Word, we can also find comfort in Zephaniah’s words. We know that God came into our midst through Jesus and that He gave us His Spirit when we believed (John 1:14; Galatians 4:6). We also know that we are deeply loved by God (1 John 4:16). Paul teaches that the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus when we pray to Him (Philippians 4:6-7). So although we are not Zephaniah’s original audience, we can find comfort in knowing that God is the same throughout all generations. He is still in our midst, He still actively rescues people, He still rejoices over us, and He still covers His children with His unending love. He is still our mighty God, and He cares for those who come and call on Him. So today, take some time to thank God for His faithfulness and reflect on His unchanging character.
