A mud stained in blue Florida cottonmouth from North Everglades. I should take more photos of these…I skip over them so often due to how common they can be at times. 🐍 #snake #snakesofinstagram #snakesofflorida #snakephotography #cottonmouth #floridacottonmouth #cottonmouthsofinstagram #wildlife #nature #herping #herpingflorida #herpingtheglobe

Went to the Chouteau Waterfowl Unit in Wagoner County Oklahoma this evening. The snakes were out. The Cottonmouth (aka Water Moccasin). This is the first one I’ve ever encountered in the wild. This semi aquatic viper is a common resident found in southern Illinois ( they’re not really found in the central or northern part of the state. I saw this beauty wile visiting the famous “Snake Road” near Carbondale, IL. This road has become quite famous for its yearly snake migrations. Many species can be observed moving from the lower swampy areas to the rocky bluffs on the other side of the road. Twice a year the road is closed for a 2.5 mile section so that these extremely important creatures have protection to and from their hibernation sites. It was just an awesome thing to see, and I gave this particular snake a ton of respect while taking photos. #cottonmouth #cottonmouthsnake #cottonmouths #cottonmouthsofinstagram #watermoccasin #watermoccasins #snake #snakes #snakesofinstagram #snakelover #snakeloversofinstagram #reptile #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #reptilelover #vipersnake #birdsandblooms #birdsandbloomsmagazine #wildbirdsunlimited #natgeowild #animallover #animalphotographer #wildanimalphotographer #outdoorillinois #outdoorphotography #nature #naturephotography #naturelovers #audubon #audubonsociety

April is snake mating season! 🐍 Did you know that snakes can lay eggs or have live birth, depending on the species? Crazy cool! Most of the snakes that mate in April have their young through live birth. These snakes include our ribbon snakes, cottonmouth, copperhead, and the yellow-bellied water snake. Many of our resident snakes that mate later in summer lay eggs, such as our rat snakes, hognose snakes and coral snakes. Whether live birth or egg layers, most of the young snakes will show up in fall.

Despite the infestation of indoor people, I still found everything that I need. The colors of this cottonmouth are amazing. This snake was fully in the shade and lit up. I suspect there is a shed nearby... #confrontinggriefwithnothingbutnature #llamalife #charleston #chucktown #southcarolina #chs #cawcawinterpretivecenter #cawcaw #ravenel #lowcountry #onlyinsouthcarolina #cottonmouthsofinstagram #cottonmouth #Agkistrodonpiscivorus

Did I mention one beautiful majestic cottonmouth? Sooo beautiful. This one is really as long as I've ever seen. I really adore snakes. I've handled copperheads and timber rattlers but never a cottonmouth. Nor do I really want to. They have a well deserved reputation. I will say this however. I have encountered over 200 moccasins during my years living in the south. Exploring places like Bond Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, the Okefenokee Swamp, and the state parks, refuges, and wilderness of Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia has placed me in very close proximity to these snakes. I can also say with mild disappointment that I've never had a cottonmouth coil, gape it's mouth giving me the classic cottonmouth warning, or "chase" me as so many people often tell me they do. I often hear about these snakes running after people. I do find these snakes to be extremely alert. This one had it's head up and looking at me when I was still 20 yards away. They are so alert. I got within a ten feet from this snake when it turned it's head and worked it's way off the left side of the path. I talked to this one as I do every snake I encounter and thanked it for sharing some time with me. I really love wildlife ❤ #llamalife #charleston #onlyinsouthcarolina #chs #cottonmouthsofinstagram #cottonmouth #pitviper #bearislandwma #wildnessisanecessity #snek #Agkistrodonpiscivorus #watermoccasin #okefenokee #bondswampnationalwildliferefuge #iheartswamps #iheartnature #cellphonepic

No deep thoughts today, just incredibly grateful for the community being built at @wildandfreeofthepines and the adventures we have together! This morning we saw a young cottonmouth - everyone is safe, but it was such a neat find! I don't think he agreed, though. That little guy was worked up and ready to fight! 🐍 Weymouth Woods is a magical place, and it was the perfect spot for our meet up today!

Florida cottonmouths☁️👄 are "like a box of chocolates🍫, you never know what you're going to get." The FL Panhandle has two subspecies that integrate heavily. Some folks call them water moccasins💧 👞 others cottonmouths ☁️👄 . I think one thing we can all agree on is too RESPECT them. Always give them the space they deserve.

My reaction to when someone insists that they have been chased by a cottonmouth… 😂🐍 • Everyone say it with me: Cottonmouths 👏🏻DON’T👏🏻 chase👏🏻people👏🏻 • Many people have claimed to be pursued by a cottonmouth. Most likely the person being "chased" was between the snake and its water source or hiding spot. They don't seem to care if the potential predator is in the way, as long as they can get to the safest place unharmed. • A snake can assess that you are bigger than it is and isn't worth putting up a fight, plus it takes a lot of energy and time to make venom. They don't want to waste it on something they can't eat, unless it is absolutely necessary for their survival. • This scaly boi gaped at me for a good 5 minutes, but that's all. I even had to move it off of the road because it wouldn't budge. After being placed out of the way, the snake bolted for the woods. • This post features a juvenile cottonmouth, I love their bi-colored eyes. The bottom brown coloration makes them look extra sassy as it looks like they are angrily squinting. • What is the tallest tale you’ve heard about any animal? Let me know in the comments section. 👇🏻

Here is a juvenile cotton mouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus) I found on a dirt road last night. • As soon as I stepped a little too close, it coiled up and gaped at me - flashing the cotton-white mouth and exposing its fangs. This behavior is a warning, if I come any closer it will have to defend itself. Not surprisingly, that's all it did, it actually looked pretty silly as it held this pose for a good five minutes. • Cotton mouths are portrayed as very aggressive animals, a description that I find so incredibly false. Because of this stereotype based on false information, people fear this species and as a result too many snakes are killed every year. I heard of an incident where a man came across a cotton mouth in the woods and pulled out his knife in order to protect himself. This person really thought the snake was going to try and kill him. Luckily, someone was there to defuse the situation and educate this poor individual. • Snake bites ending in death are extremely rare. According to the CDC, there are 7,000 - 8,000 people who are envenomated every year and only 5 people die - there are over 300 million people in the US as of 2018. Did you know that a majority (85%) of bites occur on the fingers and hands? This is because the person bitten was handling a venomous snake or attempting to kill it. • Cotton mouths and other snakes will only bite if feeling threatened or are provoked. If you see a venomous snake, don't pull out your knife, just leave it alone.

This was the second cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorous) of the SC trip, and this one was much larger at roughly 4 feet. @nacyjody walked up on this one on the edge of the same Carolina bay as the last cottonmouth. This one didn't want to face us, and also put its head under its coils underwater. #snake #snakes #snakesofinstagram #viper #vipers #vipersofinstagram #pitviper #pitvipers #pitvipersofinstagram #reptile #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #herp #herps #herper #herping #fieldherping #fieldherper #herpetology #herpsofinstagram #naturalist #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #Agkistrodon #cottonmouth #cottonmouths #cottonmouthsofinstagram

The first snake of the SC trip this past weekend was this roughly 2.5-foot cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorous) that @louisaheidler walked up on on the edge of a Carolina bay. It didn't show its mouth much, but it did strike a few times and even hid its face under the water beneath its coils, which is a new behavior I've never seen before. #snake #snakes #snakesofinstagram #viper #vipers #vipersofinstagram #pitviper #pitvipers #pitvipersofinstagram #reptile #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram #herp #herps #herper #herping #fieldherping #fieldherper #herpetology #herpsofinstagram #naturalist #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #wildlife #nature #Agkistrodon #cottonmouth #cottonmouths #cottonmouthsofinstagram

Mid January 2015 on a not very warm day I encountered this plump cottonmouth in the water and hunting! Keenly aware of what's going on and knowing of my presence. Really shattered my understanding of these pit vipers. The sun was out that day but we just had a cold snap and that water was cold. Where I hoped I may encounter some snakes sun bathing I did not expect to see this aquatic hunting behavior. We were both well out of the den and active!
