“The water is bad out here.” I had just landed in Los Angeles, this is the only small talk I could gather. I was exhausted. And was in the final stretch of travel before I could return home and watch the sky change for months on end. And ride horses. I want to ride horses. “The water is bad here.” he agrees, then pauses before mentioning “There is a huge dialysis business because of the amount of kidney failure.” “Because of the water.” I said flatley. “Because of the water.” He mentioned how he got this information but I’ve already done limited research after constantly being mildly sick whenever I arrived in Los Angeles. “How much?” my mom yells through the phone, “Arsenic?!” 430x the amount we should be drinking is found in the water. Along with chromium and other chemicals that I didn't recognize immediately. But don't worry, the Los Angeles waterboard says it's completely safe and that the study is old (2013). The light is always reaching for you… Will you reach back? I was a pretty melancholy young man as I was developing. I didn’t really have much reason for allowing myself to slip into those pensive states of sadness. And really, I was a melancholic that wished he was sanguine. I hear the saying all the time that, “Happiness is a choice.” And I actually do believe that sentiment. But what I don’t believe is that happiness is a light switch that you can turn on and off. If you spend enough time in the dark, the light can be overwhelming and harsh on the senses. The healthy choice comes when you decide to take action steps towards the light. Going from one to the other requires adjustment and transition. Sometimes you have to realize you’re in the shadows to find the cracks wherein which the light shines. I love people that are happy, I love being around happy people, and I love being happy myself. But we also have to remember that even standing in the sun casts a shadow. I hear the term ‘growth mindset’ thrown around a lot, but what does it actually MEAN? How does it show up in organizations? This has actually been studied a lot, and one particular longitudinal study over 10 years by Kenan Flagler Business School identified 4 main factors that accounted for an organization’s lack of learning, growth, and innovation. They are: Bias towards talent vs learning Bias towards success vs progress Bias towards conformity vs creativity Bias towards working hard vs working smart So the good news is that basically, if you can identify the areas where your organization is leaning towards fixed mindset actions, you can start to shift more towards the growth mindset manifestation of that area. Developing a growth mindset culture is creating one that acts in accordance with the belief that employees can improve with effort and support. That kind of culture believes that an organization as a whole can transform outside of the current boundaries and past structures. It’s not simply a way of thinking, but a way of doing business. And, I’ve written before, and I’ll write again: the goal isn’t simply effort, it’s effort AND progress… When you get this right as an organization, it’s not just some fluffy “feel good stuff” that comes from it… you’ll start to see some pretty substantial benefits: Better alignment with company values and mission Increased competitiveness in the marketplace Increased productivity Lower attrition rates Increased profits Stronger culture And last time I checked, those were ALL very important things for business and organizational success. Allí descubrí la importancia de cultivar una relación amorosa conmigo, de aceptarme con todas mis luces y sombras, a disfrutar de mi propia compañía. Aprendí a vivir en los momentos de cambio, donde lo viejo daba paso a lo nuevo. descubriendo que la vida la tejemos cada día , que la vida es efímera, inconstante, impredecible y mágica. Es un eterno fluir, una danza entre el pasado. Presente y futuro, donde cada paso que damos nos acerca mas al alma.
