Week 12 - Krong Kampot, a mountain town with #preaektuekchhuriver running right through, with views from the top of #bokornationalpark you can see from the Gulf of Thailand to South Vietnam ⛰️ There is sooooo much to see and do here… I spent half of my week in the main town, lots of great restaurants and restored French colonial buildings along the riverbank, including the #entanoubridge 🌉 I then moved up the river into the countryside staying in my own hut; where you can swim, kayak and cycle about exploring. Was the Saigon Post Office really built by Gustav Eiffel? 🇻🇳🍚🛵💌✨ Save this post! ✨Completed in 1891, The Saigon Post Office is an interesting mix of European and Asian architecture ✨The architect of the building, Marie-Alfred Foulhoux, moved to Saigon from France before becoming the city’s Architect in Chief. He also designed the Palais de Justice, the Customs Department, and the Lieutenant Governor’s Palace. Some attribute the work to Eiffel, although this is incorrect ✨The inside is reminiscent of a French station, but visitors pass under the watchful eyes of Ho Chi Minh’s portrait overhead ✨A famous sight to see here is a man named Duong Van Ngo. He has worked at the post office for more than 25 years; his job is writing letters for those who cannot write. Madame X Mansion. This circa 1825 three story Creole townhouse was the French Quarter home where the infamous Madame X grew up. She was the subject of a controversial portrait painted by John Singer Sargent in 1884 that showed her in a strapless black dress and roiled the Paris Salon where it was received. (as well as a 1966 film where she was played by Lana Turner). Her father, the Civil War veteran Philippe Avegno, owned the home in her youth from 1822 to 1861. The Forstall House 1858. This building’s sophisticated neoclassical-influenced facade is a remodeling by James Gallier Jr. of a preexisting three-story brick building that banker Edmund J. Forstall and his wife, Clara, purchased in 1857. The first story is rusticated with round-arched windows, the two floors above are united by two-story high Corinthian pilasters, with round-arched windows at the third level, and the building is topped by a low attic above a heavy cornice. The keystones of the third-floor windows are shaped as grotesques. Small iron balconies in front of the windows add a local touch, and the entire facade is painted in shades of a creamy color. This is an unusual design for New Orleans and reflects Gallier’s broad knowledge of fashionable European and American East Coast styles. Taken by surprise at the Jardin d’agronomie tropicale in Paris which is like an open-air museum that holds within itself the French colonial history. Suddenly we are brought back to French Indochina and other French colonies, represented by traditional architecture and memorials as well as indigenous plants!! The French used to organize exhibitions here to showcase to its citizens how their colonies were like back in those days. And the garden was where the French colonial empire did research on and grow indigenous plants and herbs to ship to the colonies to serve French citizens living there. The Creole Cottage was a major urban house type in New Orleans during the first half of the nineteenth century. Unquestionably of French origin, these cottages, while small in size, make use of typical eighteenth-century French planning rules, the most important of which is the omission of any sort of interior hallway. The early examples of this house type were often placed close to the ground, with only a minimal foundation. The street facades usually contained four openings: either two full-length entrances fitted with French doors, the upper sections of which were glazed, and two windows, all of which were held hinged to open into the house; or four doors with no windows. On some of the early cottages, the openings were round arches, with fanlights of glass fitted into each arch. The facades were flush with the front property line, with no front setback or yard, conserving the private space to the rear of the house for a yard. These early designs were most often of briquette-entre-poteaux (brick between post) construction, which was covered over with plaster to protect the poor-quality brick made in the city at that time. 🌳 Welcome to 794 Springdale Road - an important example of Historic Renovation within City of Atlanta’s Druid Hills Landmark District. Originally known as “Dogwood Terrace”, this French Colonial style home was designed by Georgia architect Edward Emmett Dougherty and built in 1912 for Coca-Cola executive, Charles Veazey Rainwater, and his family. The home is considered one of the earliest examples of the fine estates of Druid Hills. The interiors retain all the original period details and the Italian antiques furnished throughout the home are the homeowners family heirlooms. The property’s historic gardens were designed by original owner, Hattie C. Rainwater (a member of the Peachtree Garden Club of Atlanta) and included bridle paths for the Rainwater’s horses. Discover the original horse barn at the back of the property and look to the neighbor’s yard to see the remains of the stone grandstand, it’s where the Rainwater boys staged horse shows. The Creole Cottage was a major urban house type in New Orleans during the first half of the nineteenth century. Unquestionably of French origin, these cottages, while small in size, make use of typical eighteenth-century French planning rules, the most important of which is the omission of any sort of interior hallway. The early examples of this house type were often placed close to the ground, with only a minimal foundation. The street facades usually contained four openings: either two full-length entrances fitted with French doors, the upper sections of which were glazed, and two windows, all of which were held hinged to open into the house; or four doors with no windows. On some of the early cottages, the openings were round arches, with fanlights of glass fitted into each arch. The facades were flush with the front property line, with no front setback or yard, conserving the private space to the rear of the house for a yard. These early designs were most often of briquette-entre-poteaux (brick between post) construction, which was covered over with plaster to protect the poor-quality brick made in the city at that time.
