River Red-gums alongside the Mount Emu Creek, Glenormiston, this morning. The old snag (AKA Wildlife Tree) in the first photo is home to dozens of different species of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects over the course of a year. Spend a quiet hour beside it, as I did this morning and you'll see a variety of bird species perch on what remains of its branches for varying periods of time. Some like Red-Rumped Parrots, Magpies, Long-billed Corellas, White-Plumed Honeyeaters and Black-faced Cuckoo Shrikes will play nicely and share the space, while others like Brown Goshawks and Peregrine Falcons will land to a cacophony of sounds as all the other birds make a quick exit. Not a Pink Robin...but a Pink Ribbon Robin . . . The dusky robin (Melanodryas vittata) is a small passerine bird native to Tasmania. A member of the Australian robin family Petroicidae, it is known by many other names such as Dozey, Sad, Sleepy, Stump, Tasmania/Wood Robin; Native Sparrow or Sad Bird. It was known for many years as Petroica vittata before being placed in its current genus Melanodryas. Two subspecies are recognised, one on the Tasmanian mainland and the other on King Island. 'Stump robin' was a name given to it by early settlers from its habit of sitting on stumps or posts. Large Egret. The sunset has not long past. It was a light show of daffodil yellow, burnt orange and a crescendo of scarlet red. Now, the beach is empty and the walkers have disappeared. Their unleashed fury friends are but a distant memory. Even the dedicated fishermen have packed up their ambitions in their tackle boxes, and march off with shoulders slumped and dent backs โฆ โฆbut the Great Egret and I stay on, in the blue light, revelling in opportunities. As we were about to leave Kaydale on Saturday afternoon this beautiful goshawk was chased in by the ravens. They're a gorgeous bird and I'm thinking an immature, as the eye colour isn't yet red. . . . In Tasmania, the Grey Goshawk White Morph is a large, pure white raptor, up to 55 cm long with a wingspan of up to 110 cm. Females are almost twice as heavy as males. The species nests in mature wet forest, usually in the vicinity of a watercourse. However birds can also be seen in more open woodland and around urban fringes. Most nests are located in the north and west of the State, but smaller breeding populations also occur in the south-east and north-east. They have big ranges, hunting from perches in the forest canopy and eating small mammals, birds and insects, and sometimes carrion. The Grey Goshawk is especially threatened by habitat loss, through reduction of mature wet forest - particularly blackwood swamps - by clearing for plantations or pasture. With a population currently estimated as less than 110 breeding pairs in Tasmania, the species is also at risk from deliberate shooting and accidents with powerlines, collision and poison. To assist with its recovery - retain mature native wet forest, forest along water courses and other connecting forest corridors; prevent disturbance within 100 m of an active nest; reduce the risk of birds coming into conflict with livestock and infrastructure. I never get sick of seeing the critically endangered De Visโ Banded Snake or Mud Adder (Denisonia devisi) in the Mildura region. This individual was seen on a coolish night a couple of weeks ago with the temp hovering around 15 C. Mammal Monday. A fearsome sight (if youโre an insect) โ the fat-tailed pseudantechinus is a marsupial that hunts for insects at night in rocky habitat in central Australia. Their tails are filled with fat that acts as a backup food supply. In winter, they enter a state of torpor at night, reducing their body temperature and metabolic rate. They will then bask in the sun through the day. This reduces the amount of energy they use, and the amount of food they need to consume to survive. #wildoz #dasyurid

Splish Splash ๐ง It was a pretty lean day on Saturday on the birding front ... until it wasn't ๐ A run back up to the Leven Canyon with @mouldynstale to see if the pink robin was around. Even though we heard him, he just wasn't showing himself. So, we dropped into Kaydale Lodge for some lunch and so Craig could photograph some Autumn colour before they close for winter. We were up in the vegetable garden when a flock of green rosellas lobbed in, and I got some lovely photos of these birds, including this one that was making the most of the sprinkler. For those that would like to visit the beautiful gardens at Kaydale, they close this week, on the 1st of May, reopening in September. ๐ . . . The green rosella or Tasmanian rosella (Platycercus caledonicus) is a species of parrot native to Tasmania and Bass Strait islands. It was described by the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin in 1788, and named on the mistaken assumption it came from New Caledonia. At 14.5 in (37 cm) long it is the largest species of the rosella genus, Platycercus. Found in a wide range of habitats with some form of tree cover, the green rosella is predominantly herbivorous, consuming seeds, berries, nuts and fruit, as well as flowers, but may also eat insect larvae and insects such as psyllids. Guess who finally got a mirrorless camera ๐๐ผโโ๏ธ One of my first sessions with my new Nikon Z8, the sun was just about to set and I wasn't seeing much. I decided to try and get a photo of a Black-fronted Dotterel that was nearby. I laid down and pointed my camera at him, next thing I knew, I was SURROUNDED by about 12 of them. They came so close I couldn't even focus on them. One literally almost walked on my mat. I'm around these birds often and have never had this experience. The difference here being the silent shutter. Gone are the days of scaring these tiny birds off by the sound of my camera!

AMBUSH. Olive pythons are skilled ambush hunters, utilising classic sit-and-wait tactics to capture unsuspecting prey. As frequent rocky country residents and capable swimmers, many olive pythons will utilise waterholes in their pursuit of a meal. I first saw an olive python using a small rock pool for this purpose nearly seven years ago, and about ten metres from where this photo was taken. The area abounds in diamond doves, peaceful doves, spinifex pigeons, and an array of finches, as well as wallaroos and purple-necked rock-wallabies. All of these animals are fair game for the python (body size permitting), which will wait patiently in this position - completely submerged except from the eyes forward - until something comes down for what might be its final drink.
