🚴🏼‍♀️ CYCLE FUN 🚴🏼‍♀️ Cycling is a little more nerve wracking nowadays. Since my accident, I’m a lot slower and a lot more hesitant 😕 • Today however, I felt great! The sun probably helped a lot because there were a lot more cyclists and the cars were a little more patient 🙏🏻 • I’m still as slow as a slug 🐌 but I felt more confident and I enjoyed the ride! I am looking forward to more cycling as spring comes into play 🤩 • Who fancies a bike ride sometime soon? I have a couple of dates secured for a group cycle and I would love you all to be invited! 🙌🏻 . . . . . #lipstickandtrainers #cyclist #cyclistsoflondon #londoncycling #cyclinginlondon #londoncycle #londonsports #richmondpark #triathlontraining #ironman703training #swimbikerun #bikelovers #cyclefam

This 25k circular route is short but not so easy. Cycle up the Ridgeway in Mill Hill, then towards Barnet Lane, and take the circular route there. 2: The Cuffley Loop: This medium-level route for the more courageous cyclist is a classic with moderate hills. Straight up north towards Barnet, Hadley Wood and then Potters Bar, off to Cuffley and back. A cool 50k. 3: Finchley to Hertford Return: A 70k route also via Barnet and Potters Bar, followed by Essendon. You’ll skirt Enfield, Waltham Abbey, Chesunt, Broxbourne and Hoddesdon and end in Hertford before your return. 4: Finchley to the Chiltern Hills: An 80-km round trip that's not for the faint of heart. Bike theft is more than just a petty crime... it’s heartache for those who rely on their bikes to get to work, school or to go to the shops. Tens of thousands of Londoners are on waitlists for secure cycle parking in their borough. It's time we saw these waitlists CUT! 🙅 . . . #ThisIsAwkward #biketheft #cycleparking #cyclistsoflondon #londoncycling @stolenride @poeticunity

#Londoners, do you have somewhere secure to store your bike? Or are you one of the tens of thousands stuck on a waiting list? 😞 If we want more city dwellers to ditch their cars in favour of bikes, then city leaders need to make it as convenient and safe as possible! In London, this means ending the huge waiting lists for secure cycle storage once and for all🙅 (🔗 Check out the link in our bio to see how each London borough is doing on secure cycle storage roll-out) . . . #ThisIsAwkward #StolenDreams #cyclestorage #bikehangars #biketheft #cyclistsoflondon #londoncyclist #londonlife #cyclinginlondon

When the name says it all @loudmobility ⚡🚲⚡ Recently Ive loved working with the Loud Mobility team (pic 1) to help kickstart their #sheselectric campaign. A campaign that aims to inspire and enable more women to cycle and discover the joy of e-bikes! Dynamic and stylish, and showing you don’t need to wear a single item of lycra to ride a bike, the shoot was an absolute blast! Ive also been a tad jealous of their recent epic e-cycling adventure from London to Amsterdam for the @cargobikefest and @fullychargedshow along with @fettlebike founder @jeydaheselton (pic 2) Here is to being LOUD and ‘raising the volume on joyful, sustainable journeys’. #ShesElectric #CargoCycle #Ecycles #Ebikes #everydayriding #joyfuljourneys #womenwhoride #cyclistsoflondon #bikelife #cyclinglife #womenintransport #womeninmobility #londonphotographer

Our mate @jeydaheselton Founder of @fettlebike joins us for the big e-cycle to Amsterdam 🎉 📸 - @beckymursellphotography ______ As female founders in the cycling world we're often invited to speak on topics relating to our gender rather than our experience, or worse be asked to explain why including women is important 🤦🏽‍♀️ As we make our journey to @cargobikefest and @fullychargedshow, we're clear that this trip is not about proving our place, it's about having a great time, enjoying cycling in the way we want to, and taking up space. Join us here as we share the journey with you all. Photographing the same place, over and over, from a rather fixed viewpoint, gives me a better sense of time, and how the continually changing sun path coincides with everyday lives of people. “We need to get more women cycling. That is really important. And women need to come forward and make contact with organisations like Joy Riders” 100 Cyclists of London ~ Mariam 🚲 📸 Recently I met with Mariam who is the CEO of @joyriders_britain, an organisation whose aim is to change Britain’s cycling equation. Their vision is to help shift the percentages. From 70% of regular riders being men, to at least 50% women/ 50% men. From cycling being the primary transport for 2% of the population, to 20%+ of people choosing to ride a bike as their main way of getting around. Based in London, Manchester, Oxford and Cambridge, Joy Riders offer fully led rides for women, by women. They help women gain confidence in their riding skills to the point where they are happy and comfortable riding a bike independently. “When I started cycling here in London, after I had my kids and stuff, I never saw any other Muslim women or many women at all cycling. I heard about this group of Muslim women who go on a bike ride and so I thought let me join them and see how it is.” She was quickly recruited as a ride leader, then took an opportunity to become a cycling instructor and now leads the whole organisation. It was her experiences of becoming a cycling instructor that proved most eye-opening. Having cycled all her life, ‘things like barriers to cycling and stuff never occurred to me because I never felt like I had any of those barriers. I never learnt to drive as I never thought it necessary.’ ‘A lot of it is the perception of safety. That is a universal barrier which I think most women have in London. Then there are cultural and social barriers. Things like the perception of cycling being a sport rather than transport. That you have to wear lycra which you really don’t. Then there are often individual barriers where people really feel wobbly on the bike or they never learnt to ride a bike and just don't know how.’ It was inspiring work to learn more about and thanks for such a warm welcome on a ride ✨ #cyclistsoflondon #photographyproject #personalproject #cycling #cyclinglife #bikes #womencycle #womenonbikes #getinvolved

‘We wanted to be a shop that got as many people as possible onto bikes. For the environment, for exercise as its good for you plus its fun! In order to get the right bike for you and to get the best service you can, we felt that you actually need to sit on a bike and develop that personal relationship with a bike shop. That's why we decided we didn't want to be online’ 100 Cyclists of London ~ Karina 🚲 📸 A few months ago I met Karina, one of the owners of @bonveloshop. Together with her partner John, they run two bike shops, one based in Herne Hill and the other in West Norwood. Born out of both of their passions for cycling and the desire to leave the rat race so as to not miss their first child growing up, Bon Velo first became established in Herne Hill 12 years ago. Starting off with high end road bikes ‘thinking we like these so everyone must’, the shops have slowly evolved ‘to what London is about really; commuters and kids bikes.’ Although now she mainly uses a bike to commute and get the kids around, growing up in Germany, Karina’s passion for cycling began with mountain biking and downhill racing 🚵‍♀️ Getting out of the house, getting on the bike with her friend and going into the woods ‘used to be a brilliant thing to do. Just fun.’ Her ventures into racing ‘weren’t serious. It was fun racing. I never won anything and fell off a lot.’ Never one to be fainthearted, downhill racing then became replaced by 100km round trips to work (apparently it was quicker than sitting in a car on the motorway!) and then triathlons. Rumour has it we might even be taking on a triathlon together this summer 😎 Thanks so much for being a part of this project Karina ✨ What to get involved in the project or know someone who should? “The Penny Farthing creates amazing social connections and also connects you with the cycling past.” - 100 Cyclists of London ~ Jeremy Vine 🚲 📸 @thejeremyvine wasn’t always a keen cyclist, and admits ‘I did actually really dislike cyclists for a long time.’ However, when he was in his 40’s he recognised that something had to change after experiencing overload and burnout. ‘I realised I had to get physically fit and do something that wasn’t work. A gym didn't work because I never got there. I had a one year membership and I just went once to the jacuzzi. So I then thought Im going to have to embed exercise into my routine. I started cycling to the BBC and back.” Initially discovering the ‘sheer joy’ of cycling through regular commuting, it wasn’t until 2015 when someone rode past Jeremy on a penny farthing did he consider getting one. He acknowledges that riding the penny farthing “completely changes the dynamic on the roads” for both himself and others. For if you follow Jeremy’s active twitter feed, it highlights the complex and often dangerous realities that cyclists face on a daily basis on London roads. However by riding the penny farthing, “You suddenly realise that cars aren’t cars. They are human beings in metal boxes. Once they stop and they like something, they will be completely different. They won't be angry any more, they aren't rushing They wave out the window and its lovely. It makes you realise that if you can get people to defocus on seeing other people as road users, and instead think of them as fathers, grandfathers, grandmothers, human beings, then suddenly we would all get on much better. The penny farthing does that. It just jolts people.” Thanks for such a fun shoot Jeremy - your warmth, sense of humour and time made it really special. “It is a good local little illustration that change is actually possible." 100 Cyclists of London ~ Jon 🚲 📸 What might be hard to tell at first glance from Jon’s portrait is that he is standing in front of a piece of infrastructure he has helped to change. To many, a small raised ridge on a path might seem fairly innocuous and a slight annoyance, however through Jon’s activism he has helped to literally level it out. “For other members of our community, who may be less physically able and who might be using wheelchairs or mobility scooters etc - those kinds of things can either be major discomfort and/or a real impediment for them to be able to access the green space which they should be able to benefit from. Its one of those things which is a real detail. I may never meet the people who can now actually use it but that's kind of not the point. For it now means that people can. I get very excited about that.” Jon’s bike itself also has a role to play in his political activism. Owning a cargo bike means he is able to easily distribute leaflets and communicate with his local community. Whilst his branded pannier bags also help to raise awareness and associate his name with his party, all things which are needed in local politics. In fact it was his branded pannier bags which caught my attention when I saw his bike parked up outside of a supermarket several times. So naturally, when I saw him cycling ahead of me down the road one day I rashly cycled up to him and asked if he wanted to be involved with the project. Although I have only shared a small part of your story here, thank you Jon for your kindness, openness and generosity in sharing your story with me. It was a real pleasure to meet you and a testament to how bikes can make you open to the world and create chance encounters ✨ What to get involved in the project or know someone who should? Cyclists of London - Norman 🚲 📸 “I knew what I wanted in life. I wanted to move to a city which was more bike friendly. I wanted to get a bike specifically that would expand how I could live.” Back in 2022, Norman made the big decision to move 17,000km from their home city of Sydney to explore setting up their life in London 🛩 They found that Sydney was a very car-dependent city and one which made it really hard to not own a car. Standing by their convictions that you don’t need a car to live a certain lifestyle, Norman made the decision to move and bought an e-cargo bike. Investing in a Riese & Muller Load 75, they chose a bike which allowed them great flexibility. “Its really designed to enhance my quality of life.” In the day to day, it allows them to easily carry fresh groceries from farmer's markets, bulky camera equipment and even a passenger. “If I thought about having kids later on then something like this would be wonderful.” Norman has even had some adventures in Epping Forest on the bike, “the nature of a bike like this means it lets you live an interesting life.” Building on their activist roots in Sydney, Norman has immediately got involved with @london_cycling_campaign, for living in a city which has the infrastructure to support safe cycling was really important in Norman’s decision to move. Although far from perfect, they had heard about the Cycle Superhighways and thought it a good place for them to start. “When the infrastructure is there and you feel safe it is just a lovely way to get around, run a bunch of errands or just enjoy a Sunday. Its a freedom thing. You are open to the world. You are not closed away like you are in a car. You have to be part of it. Sometimes rain happens. But its about the joy of being on a bicycle and all that entails.” ✨ What to get involved in the project or know someone who should? 100 Cyclists of London ~ Marion 🚲 📸 “It is the most rewarding job I have ever had. Seeing the impact that learning to ride a bike can have for people who are living in very very difficult and stressful situations.” For Marion, over the past 10 years, a bike has increasingly played an important role in her life. Initially she used it as a way to commute, socialise with friends and just generally get about on a ‘really shitty bike’. However, upon discovering the joys of riding a road bike, she became more adventurous and began to also see cycling as a sport. Weekends soon involved long rides and even bike packing trips! 🚴‍♀️ Then when Covid hit, she discovered a volunteering opportunity with @the_bikeproject and signed up for their Bike Buddy scheme. A scheme which matched her to a refugee in her local area so that they could go for bike rides together. The first person she was matched with had almost no experience of riding a bike. However with support from the Bike Project’s Pedal Power scheme, involving free lessons from a trained cycling instructor, alongside rides with Marion, they went from completely nothing to being able to ride. ✨ “It was really amazing to see her journey.” Being part of this then inspired Marion to explore becoming a cycling instructor herself. Becoming qualified through BikeWorks, she then started working for the Bike Project on the Pedal Power Programme herself “Which is just great and amazing. It is the most rewarding job I have ever had. No matter what level a woman starts at, you can really see the difference and it is really really beautiful. I love it. ” Want to get involved in the project or know someone who should? I am looking for 100 cyclists to take part and I would love to hear from you! “I work for London Cycling Campaign, trying to make the roads safe enough for kids to ride on.”🏙️🚲 From chatting to Katy, it is evident that a bike has always had a place in her life. A place and role that has continuously evolved to the point where she now works for @london_cycling_campaign Growing up, the bike was primarily a means of transport for her - allowing her to travel to friends’ houses, attend flute exams, or even using it to drop off washing at her aunt’s house whilst at uni! For a while she didn’t ride a bike at all, however, as she entered into the working world of London she found herself reflecting on how she commuted to work and what impact this was having on her health. “I was doing 40 mins each way on the Piccadilly line and I had read somewhere that that was like smoking 2 cigarettes because the air quality is that bad. I was thinking 'oh my god I don't even smoke and this is 4 cigarettes a day.’ I thought maybe I should do something about it.” Shortly afterwards she helped her work set up a cycle-to-work scheme which in turn helped her to buy a bik‍e 🚴‍♀️ For a few years she then changed career to become a cycling trainer. However, then found it hard when she heard parents saying “well that's really great, thanks very much, but they aren't going on the roads as it is far too dangerous.” Reflecting on these comments, she concluded that ‘maybe I need to help change the roads.’ Instead of sitting back and doing nothing about it, she now works as a network co-ordinator for LCC, an organisation that campaigns to make cycling in London safer and more enjoyable for everyone ✨ The inspiration for taking this portrait and creating movement behind her was based upon her approach to cycling around the city. Instead of aiming to go as fast as possible, her approach is to see how relaxed and chilled out she can be and where she can drink her ☕ on the go (helped by a bike with back pedals!). She hopes by adopting this approach it will help make the roads feel more welcoming to other people and encourage them to take up cycling. #cyclistsoflondon #photographyproject #personalproject #cycling #cyclinglife #getinvolved

Cyclists of London ~ Sinead and Martin 🚲 📸 “You save so much money that you are able to buy a bike.” Over five years ago, when they were newly wed and both studying for their masters, Sinead and Martin discovered that their local council ran a subsidised scheme designed to get people into cycling. Prompted by a desire to save money, cutting down on transport costs by riding a bike seemed like a good solution. However, they were initially put off by the expense of buying a bike. Instead, they paid £10 each to their local council who then loaned them a bike and basic equipment for a month (or two!). By using the bikes as their primary mode of transport “we saved so much money from travel that we were able to buy our bikes. We can’t recommend it enough - looking on your council’s website. There are so many subsidised ways to get into cycling” Since that moment they have become avid cyclists; using their bikes to commute, go to the supermarket, meet friends and even start to go longer distances 🚴‍♂️ 🚴‍♀️ For Martin “I feel happier and healthier. It is just like freedom.” What to get involved in the project or know someone who should? I am looking for 100 cyclists to take part and I would love to hear from you! 100 Cyclists of London ~ Jess 🚲 📸 “Cycling has become a huge part of my life.” Since moving to London from South Africa, increasingly cycling has played an important role in Jess’s life. The bike has moved beyond simply being a mode of transport to get from A to Z. From initially being hooked up with a bike by a friend to later working in a bike shop, Jess now works for two cycling charities - London Cycling Campaign and Bike Works, and has started to get into BMX. We chose to create Jess’s portrait in this place because, for her, it represents her conscious decision to seek out alternative quieter routes when cycling 😌 “When I started working for London Cycling Campaign I became much more aware of all the alternative routes to main roads. I started seeking them out and also became more willing to get lost! It is just much more pleasant and less stressful.” I am looking for 100 cyclists to take part.
