WHAT'S WITH THE NAME?? We thought we should probably explain....... THE ORIGINS In Tour de France lore, a Gruppetto is a group of riders who have a) been dropped from the main peloton but b) stick together to avoid disqualification from the day's race (because TdF can't disqualify all of them altogether). THE MEANING Yes, it's a group of slower riders. But it's also a group of people who band together to stick it to the man - which is, depending on your politics, arguably more important. LONDON'S GRUPPETTO For us, Gruppetto is about getting outside & being with yer mates - no stress, no dropping, and definitely no egos, amicos. Biggest climb to date 18kms of Mare de Deu del Mont. It was hot and steep but the views were incredible. In awe of the fitness levels in the squad the climb was challenging but the steeper sections were manageable. The descent was slightly terrifying but I took my time with it especially when we turned off to a gravelly track. What I lack in speed I make up with technique and handling my bike well, and cycling in a way that doesn't gas me well before I get to the end. This climb is doable for many people. But I would definitely work on descending too because that's just as demanding. On the climb I saw a familiar face (if you follow cycling) the winner of the second ever women's Paris Roubaix race @aliactionjackson whipping past me. She said she would meet me up the top for a photo. And a Fanta was provided as a fair exchange. A cool moment at the end of a tough few hours in the saddle and love that she enjoyed the vibe of the club. She even named her ride after CGC. Ben popped into our Streatham store earlier this week needing some urgent repairs after a small collision on his way to Dover.
