2 weeks ago this guy wouldn’t even let me get within 10 feet without going crazy. Now he jumps on my back to eat bananas. Working with our 3 cyclura has been such an eye opening experience for me, we’ve all learned to trust one another and let our guards down. This guy used to try to take a finger off if I even tried to touch him and through a lot of patience and listening to @crutchfieldreptilefarm on how to train reptiles we’ve made leaps and bounds in mere days! The Blue Iguana (Cyclura lewisi) is a large, 1.5 meter, 10 kilo+, herbivorous lizard species. Endemic to Grand Cayman island they are one of the rarest and most endangered reptile species in the world. This is due to habitat destruction and the introduction of humans, cats, dogs, pigs, rats and green iguanas to their island. Maak in deze fase gebruik van die energie en ga leuke dingen ondernemen. FASE 3 de ovulatie fase: Deze fase is erg belangrijk want het is de periode waarin je als vrouw de mogelijkheid hebt om zwanger te worden. Vlak voor de eisprong neemt de progesteron een flinke sprint. Ook het hormoon oestrogeen bereikt in deze fase een hoogtepunt. Wat erg fijn is aan deze fase, is dat het een positief effect heeft op je gemoedstoestand. In deze fase ga je helemaal schitteren, je voelt je zelfzekerder en vrolijk. FASE 4 de luteale fase: In deze fase wordt progesteron geproduceerd. Vindt er geen bevruchting van de eicel plaats? Dan daalt de oestrogeen en progesteron in je lichaam. Door daling van deze hormonen kun je meer stemmingswisselingen ervaren. Daardoor kun je sneller geïrriteerd raken, je hebt minder zelfvertrouwen en je zit wat minder lekker in je vel. #fridayfacts 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒂 𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰𝒈𝒖𝒂𝒏𝒂! The Mona Island Iguana (𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘫𝘯𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘪) used to be considered a subspecies of the Rhinoceros Iguana (𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘢), but the two are now designated as separate species. Some prominent characteristics they do share are their hefty dewlaps and their “brain bumps”—pads of fat that form a helmet of sorts. Research has suggested that the horns, bumps, and jowls may function as protection against fights and sharp rocks. And with their habitat, they can use a little padding! This species is found only on Isla Mona, an island off of Puerto Rico, which is mostly limestone rock. The Mona Island Iguanas use crevices, caves, and hollows in the rocky formations as retreats. But softer soil sinkholes are prized locations used by both males and females. Females use these sinkholes for laying eggs when they can, and even fight over them. But most end up making the trek to the coast to nest in sandy areas there. The Mona Island Iguana population is currently stable, thanks to dedicated conservation efforts. However, the species remains listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered, due to invasive predators, human activity, and habitat damage from storms. The San Salvador iguana (Cyclura rileyi rileyi) is one of the most endangered iguanas in the world with only around five hundred left. Invasive predators like dogs, cats, hogs, and rats have decimated their populations along with large scale clear cutting of forests on mainland San Salvador. Additionally, an introduced moth has decimated prickly pear populations in their island making it difficult for them to find food. In our study abroad we were lucky enough to see four reintroduced individuals on mainland San Salvador and an another wild individual. Cyclura iguanas are the largest remaining terrestrial herbivores across the Caribbean and as a result fill essential roles as seed dispersers and ecosystem engineers. 𝔹𝕖𝕒𝕔𝕙 𝔹𝕖𝕒𝕦𝕥𝕚𝕖𝕤—𝕒𝕥 𝕙𝕠𝕞𝕖 𝕚𝕟 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕤𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕤𝕦𝕟! 🏝️ ☀️ 🦎 The beautiful Turks and Caicos Iguana (𝘊𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢) is the largest native land animal in the Turks and Caicos Islands. It is one of the smaller species of rock iguana, though, with males measuring about 14 inches in head and body length and weighing about four pounds. Males tend to be larger than females, with a more pronounced crest and scales on their neck and back. Turks and Caicos Rock Iguanas live the island life, found among the limestone rock formations and vegetation along the sandy strand and at the beaches. On Little Water Cay and Mangrove Cay, the iguanas make their burrows by digging them in light soil or soft marine limestone. On other cays that are made up of hard limestone, they use the sinkholes and crevices in the rock for their retreats. Mostly they eat plants, munching the leaves, flowers, and fruits of more than 100 plant species. But they have been known to nab insects, mollusks, and crabs if they can get them. At one time, this iguana species was found throughout the Turks and Caicos, but the introduction of invasive predators and habitat loss took their toll. In the 1990s, the species was listed by IUCN as Critically Endangered, with a rapidly declining population. Yikes! However, conservationists stepped in to make a difference. Efforts including the removal of invasive predators, moving iguanas to cleared islands where they could successfully reproduce, conducting ecology studies, monitoring and tracking the populations, and establishing protective legislation and education programs all helped this species to recover. And conservation works! In 2020, the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana’s status was changed from Critically Endangered to Endangered, because the population is stable and now on the increase.
