Assassin bugs in Dahlonega? Or, kissing bug? What’s in a name? A lot of folks that get into studying nature love learning the common names. Why wouldn’t you, you are getting to know the world around you and all it’s diversity! But some sub-groups in particular try to steer clear of common names and use generally standardized scientific names. Why bother? Well for one, sometimes using a common name over a scientific name can mean illness or worse (we are looking at you mycologists and mushroom foragers… but we will wait until the summer to dive into that). Here we have two types of ASSASSIN bugs, both we found in Dahlonega this spring. Wait, actually those are KISSING bugs, don’t worry… Yeah, they are called both. The Spined Assassin Bug (Sinea diadema) and Orange Assassin Bug (Pselliopus barberi) both come from the Reduviidae family. This family is notable for a couple things: the cute (?) “kissing” can lead to Chagas disease in some countries, making kissing bugs one of the top 10 deadliest animals in the world, every year. BUT, Chagas is not found in Georgia. In a surprise twist, it is the “assassin” component that makes them considered a beneficial bug for controlling pest insects. *Potential lifer alert!* Newer to birding? Didn’t know that many folks call birdwatching birding? Well this is a good chance to get out in Dahlonega and find a less common bird that you may have never seen before, a “lifer.” Lifer= not yet on your life list. “Life list”= a list of all the bird species you have seen in your life. The rose-breasted grosbeak is a great one to keep an eye out for, and it sometimes goes to feeders, where that boy can EAT. I say boy also because the boys are the ones you will notice first. The ladies tend to be less flashy, as is the case in the bird world. Peers in Central Georgia have been reporting this species recently. We have kept an ear out as the birds migrate north for the summer. And today we recorded our first! Photos to come if we can get a good look. Dahlonega’s femme fatale?…It’s a great time of year to look for low flowering plants in North Georgia! The wild grasses have not grown too high and beautiful flowers abound. One that is not necessarily the most conventionally beautiful is the elusive jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum). Three prominent leaves above a flower that looks almost like a pitcher plant, with mainly green coloring. So, if not attracting pollinators with colors, what goes on here? Is it like pitcher plants, fly traps, sundews, and others? No! … Yes! Male specimens have a hole at the bottom that allows gnats that enter to crawl out. Females on the other hand have no escape hole. Entrance means becoming prey. Add this unlikely species to the group of female killers like praying mantis and black widows. So, you could head up to North Carolina to find venus fly traps (they live spottily in other areas but mainly NC)… or you could walk around Dahlonega and search for a Jack! Behold, a local Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea) sighting! We took this photo today in Dahlonega. Ever think all those red birds out in the yard are just cardinals? Well most all of the time you are right. There are some other neat ones like the Scarlet Tanagers, which have a stark color contrast in the black wings in males and no crest like cardinals. Not to be confused with the Summer Tanagers, which lack the solid black wings, or Hepatic Tanagers, which are mainly found in Central and South America, along with the US Southwest. Also not to be confused with Scarlett Johanssons, which played opposite Bill Murray in one of the best films ever made. Also, no wings. Happy Earth Day, everyone.
