The screening will be on Princess Mononoke, a 1997 Japanese anime set in the late Muromachi period of Japan. The term mononoke is not a name but a Japanese word for supernatural, shape-shifting beings that possess people and cause suffering, disease, or death. The story follows a young Emishi prince named Ashitaka and his involvement in a struggle between the gods of a forest and the humans who consume its resources. The event will begin with a seminar held by Professor Petros Babasikas (Director, Honours Bachelor of Arts, Architectural Studies) and conclude with an open discussion with members of the Daniels Faculty. ☕️ Meet the Artists: Alex Gaskin Alex Gaskin is a workshop assistant in the fabrication workshop. His background is largely based in Art and Fabrication, holding degrees in Sculpture from NSCAD University, Computation Art (Tangible Computation) from Concordia and Wood Shop Technology from Humber. His interests were heavily influenced by the Bauhaus syllabus of materials. His work navigates gender and identity roles in Art, Craft and trades, as well as domesticity and the comforts and conflicts that it may contain. His subjects of study are often Flora, Fawna, Fire. ☕️ Meet the Artists: Diana Guzmán Valencia Diana is a polyglot multidisciplinary creative, able to create from the digital to the territorial scale! She possesses an extensive background in design, including a bachelor degree in industrial design, a dual master degree in architecture, urban planning/design and landscape design; college certificates in: digital media, user experience design, graphic design, web design and development. She also developed her skills in community art creating vertical community gardens and products, showcased at the Milan Design Week, The Bentway and the Mackenzie House Museum; winning different accolades, among them the Design TO People's Choice Community Award. She is an entrepreneur running her design studio IDITA, offering design and art services with a holistic approach to provide sustainable solutions as well as thoughtful digital and physical experiences. She aspires to continue expanding her mind with meaningful experiences and collaborative projects like the Coffee with Artists at Daniels Art Directive! ☕️ Meet the Artists: Sukaina Kubba @sukainakubba Sukaina Kubba is a Toronto-based artist with a multi-disciplinary and material-based practice. Her work is rooted in material and cultural research, story-telling, drawing and drawing connections. Kubba works with industrial materials in their capacity as signifiers and concrete indices, and investigates traveling objects, textiles and vehicles as containers of cross-cultural histories and relational narratives. Recently, Kubba has been researching rugs -primarily from the Iraq/Iran region- as peripatetic heirlooms, artifacts and units of architecture. She is interested in how they are made, purchased, rolled, wrapped, transported, settled-or-acquired in deserts, homes and museum collections. Kubba references these rugs through drawing, printmaking and embroidery, using materials such as rubber, liquid latex, 3d-filament, found thread and re-used packaging. Kubba’s work has been shown at The Next Contemporary, Toronto; Art Toronto; Aga Khan Museum, Toronto; Art Gallery of Ontario; Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow; Glasgow Project Room; Glasgow International Art Festival (2016 & 2014), Hilary Crisp, London; and Kendall Koppe, Glasgow; among others. Recent residencies include International Studio and Curatorial Program, NYC, and La Wayaka Current in the Atacama Desert, Chile. Kubba is a sessional lecturer at Daniels Faculty, University of Toronto. From 2013 to 2018 Kubba was lecturer and curator at the Glasgow School of Art. ☕️ Meet the Artists: Amelia Ehrhardt @amelia.np.e Amelia is a dancer, choreographer, and multidisciplinary artist. Their work has been performed and supported across Canada and internationally: notable engagements include OFFTA (Montréal), SEAD (Salzburg), Mile Zero Dance (Edmonton), and the Art Gallery of Ontario. Amelia’s choreographic practice is deeply influenced by their work as an interpreter, and they have performed in works by Susie Burpee, Willi Dorner, Julia Sasso, Menaka Thakkar, Deanna Peters, and Suzy Lake. Amelia is the former Curator of Dancemakers and is the founder of Flowchart Modular Performance Projects. Amelia was 2017 danceWEB recipient and a 2016 Toronto Arts Council Leadership Lab fellow. Currently Amelia is enrolled in the Masters in Visual Studies program at the University of Toronto. Amelia is also a practicing counseling Astrologer with a private practice. Meet our Jury: Daniels Art Directive @danielsartdirective Founded in 2019, the Daniels Art Directive (DAD) is a student-led group that creates exhibitions, workshops, and community art projects. These include DOMUS (2019), the "Support Black Designers." Mural (2020-21), the Daniels Mural Project: umbe magada (2021-Present), and Doorways (2022). The murals won awards in the @designtofestival. We stand for accessibility, equity, diversity, inclusivity, and creativity. As a co-founder of the group, Michelle Ng has been part of many of its projects (not always as an exec). She hopes to create more art opportunities for, with, and by more students. She is a Tkaronto-based artist interested in visual, literary, architectural, and interactive storytelling. Meet our Jury: AVSSU @uoft.avssu The Architecture and Visual Studies Students Union (AVSSU) represents & advocates for the rights of the undergraduate student body of the Daniels Faculty. We dedicate our resources to helping a range of clubs at Daniels and host events. Our goal is to foster an inclusive, diverse and safe environment for everyone and we strive for easy access to resources and facilitate communication between students, professors, and the faculty.  Zikra Hotee-Beekun is a fifth year undergraduate student in the Comprehensive Stream. She is the president of the student union for the 2022-2023 term. She co-founded the Student Equity Alliance in 2020, co-chaired the alliance as Equity Commisioner during the last term and look forward to using these experiences for her current term to create a safe and comfortable space that encourages participation. Meet our Jury: Black Students in Design @blackstudentsindesign The Black Students in Design, formally the Black Students at Daniels, was founded in July 2020, and was made to uplift, support and create space for Black and Indigenous Students within the professional design industry. What was once a group for Black students attending the Daniels Faculty became a larger club that eventually grew to include design students across Canada. BSD hosts monthly events for their members during the school year to give students a safe place to unwind and have engaging conversations with their fellow members. Rayah Flash is a third-year undergraduate Architectural Studies student at Daniels. As one of the event coordinators for Black Students in Design, she assists with the communication and planning for the group. Through her position, she would like to encourage Black youth to pursue their passions and higher education. In the past, she has participated in mural teams and led art clubs and events. Rayah is excited to share her passion for design and urbanism with her community and to be a part of this DAD initiative. Image Description: 1.
