Archival Image of The Jharna, a waterfall created for the Mughal pleasure. It was created with surplus water from the Hauz-e-Shamsi tank during the monsoon. Nawab Ghaziuddin Khan Firoz Jung, a nobleman at the court of Aurungzeb built the colonnaded dalan containing the water fall and a tank in front of it. Later, the Mughal emperor Muin-ud-Din Muhammad Akbar Shah built the double pavilion to the north and Bahadur Shah II added baradari in the center between the two tanks. The two tanks, one square and the other rectangular are connected by a water channel. The first time I heard the name Meena Bazaar, it was in the song ‘𝘒𝘢𝘫𝘳𝘢 𝘔𝘶𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘣𝘢𝘵 𝘞𝘢𝘢𝘭𝘢’. A group of women from the society had gathered with a dholak and a spoon, for a night of dance, song and music at our house, during my cousin’s wedding celebration week. Remembering that night, it felt so appropriate to find that the origins of the market itself are rooted within these spaces of feminine abandon. Meena Bazaars, or “Khush-Roz”, were markets organized by Mughal emperors for the women of the Zenankhaana, the living quarters of Mughal Queens and nobility. Female traders and artisans would come to the Mahal from all over the city, and the festivities and exchanges would be abundant and safe within the walls of the forts. No man, but the emperor, would be allowed in. #ToraniTales #MeenaBazaar

Pictured here is a rare photo of Feroz Shah Kotla followed by an intriguing story behind the Ashokan Pillar. Constructed in 1354 by Feroz Shah Tughlaq (1309 - 1388 CE), the third Sultan of the Tughlaq dynasty, Feroz Shah Kotla is a citadellocated in the centre of the city of Ferozabad. While hunting in Topra Kalan in Haryana's present-day Yamunanagar district in 1356, Feroz Shah came upon two Ashokan pillars. One of these pillars can be seen in this photograph and is still standing today. The second pillar which was brought back from Topra Kalan, was put in Firuz Shah's hunting lodge in North Delhi's Ridge region. Finding its mention in Afif's Tarikh-i-Firuz Shahi, Firuzabad was a thriving city with several mosques, caravanserais, and three palaces with the city also being well linked with Delhi resulting in a lot of traffic moving back and forth. #ferozshahkotla #ashokanpillar #delhihistory #delhiheritage #delhimonuments #delhiarchives #delhiartculturelanguages #delhiacl #delhigovt

India got freedom in 1947. In 1948, Miranda House was established. Miranda House chose its first student president in 1949. In 1950, it gave itself a constitution. Elections were first time held in 1950 as per the constitution. India got its constitution in 1950-51. First elections in India were held in 1951-52. How do we understand an institution which upheld the idea of democratic principles before the nation did? An institution built on the ideas of freedom, union, democracy and camaraderie. In a way to complete 75 years, Miranda House has emerged as an idea. An idea of a space which prepares women as free, uninhibited individuals. The board of our student's union presidents from 1949 is celebration of our long lasting principles of freedom and democracy. Qila-i-Kuhna Masjid, photographed in 1912-13. The most magnificent structure still standing within Purana Qila, the Qila-i-Kuhna Masjid, was built by Sher Shah in 1541 with a combination of marble and deep red sandstone. Architecturally, this mosque occupies an influential position in the development of the mosque in Indo-Islamic architecture, as it exemplifies the transitional phase from Lodi to Mughal styles. Its facade of arches, oriel windows and corner towers on the rear end are features seen in Lodi period mosques, such as the Bara Gumbad Masjid in Lodi Gardens. Inside the hall, the mihrabs are richly decorated with concentric arches. Over one million Indian troops served overseas, of whom around 75,000 died during the war. The Old Iron Bridge is from a series of aerial views taken in 1933. After the Great Revolt, the need to link the British-ruled territories by railway lines, desultorily discussed in 1853, acquired a sense of urgency. This magnificent iron bridge, completed in 1867, was at two levels, the higher one for trains and the other for carts and pedestrians. It carried trains from Calcutta to Kalka, near the summer capital, Shimla, through Delhi. Adham Khan's tomb as it was in the early 1908. Adham Khan's tomb, set on a high plinth with low towers at each corner, is located across the road from the Mehrauli bus terminal along the walls of Lal Kot, said to have enclosed Delhi's first city. The octagonal chamber has a dome crowned by a red sandstone finial. So thick are the walls and so many of the passages within them, that visitors often get lost or disoriented-a phenomenon that has given this tomb the popular name Bhul-Bhulaiyan, or "labyrinth". Adham Khan's mother, Maham Anga, was one of Emperor Akbar's wet nurses. However, tragically, Adham Khan was executed by the emperor because he killed Ataga (Atgah) Khan, the husband of another wet nurse, Ji Ji Anga. Maham Anga died of grief soon thereafter, and both were buried in this tomb that the remorseful emperor built-although there appears to be only one grave in the mausoleum today. . . #DelhiArchives #Archives #indianhistoryphotos #indianhistorypics #indianhistorypictures #AdhamKhan #AdhamKhanTomb #Mehrauli #Delhi #DelhiHistory #HistoryofDelhi #ArchivalPhoto #monument #monumentsofdelhi

An archival image of Ghantewala, Chandni Chowk, Delhi, established in 1790, was one of the oldest halwai shops in India. It was founded by Lala Sukh Lal Jain, who had arrived in the walled city of Delhi from Amber, India. There are several theories regarding how it acquired the name "Ghantewala". Some say it was named after the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II, who used to send his servants to get sweets from the ghante ki neeche wali dukaan, which in time became Ghantewala.  Another theory is that the founder, Lala Sukh Lal Jain, used to sell his sweets by walking from street to street while ringing a bell to attract attention. As a result, people began to refer to him as "Ghantewala" as he gained popularity. Later, when he opened a shop, he named it "Ghantewala". In 1954, B.R. Chopra produced a Bollywood film Chandni Chowk. The thought of Chandni Chowk without Ghantewala was unimaginable to him. So, to give the film an authentic feel, he made sure the shop replica appeared in it. . . #DelhiArchives #ChandniChowk #OldDelhi #Ghantewala #shahjahanabad #indianhistoryphotos #indianhistorypictures #indianhistorypics #DelhiPhotos #OldPhotos #Archives #Delhi6 #Delhi

Despite the majority of civilized countries at the time already using the Hallmarking System, the British Indian Government rejected the proposal by stating that goldsmiths and silversmiths were in a position to protect their wares with their marks. Sher Shah Gate or Lal Darwaza near Purana Qila, photographed in 1912-13. Sher Shah Gate was one of the entrances to the city that the Afghan noble Sher Shah Sur built after he conquered Delhi from its Mughal ruler, Humayun, in 1540. Sher Shah's city, called Shergarh, was built around his citadel, the Purana Qila, and archaeologists have determined that this city was very extensive. The Sher Shah Gate is located on Mathura Road, north of the Khairu'l-Manazil Masjid and opposite the Delhi Zoo. This structure is largely constructed of red sandstone and is therefore referred to as the Lal Darwaza, or red gate, an epithet it shares with the Khuni Darwaza. In the upper storey of the gate, sandstone is interspersed with grey quartzite. There is a curtain wall on either side of the gateway. Both the curtain wall and the gateway are surmounted by battlements. . . #DelhiArchives #Delhi #PuranaQila #Humayun #SherShahSuri #Suri #Shergarh #khairulmanazil #laldarwaja #IndianHistoryPhotos #IndianHistoryPics #IndianHistoryPictures #History #IndianHistory #DelhiHistory

#DocumentoftheWeek Connaught Place, or 'CP' as it is more commonly known, is a massive commercial and financial centre in New Delhi. It was originally a ridge covered with kikar trees prior to construction. As part of the creation of the Imperial City of Delhi, the British Indian Government acquired and evicted three villages, Madhoganj, Jaisinghpura, and Raja Ka Bazzar, which belonged to the Maharaja of Jaipur. These documents deal with the acquisition of land and the preservation of temples in those areas, like the Bara Hanuman Temple, Guru ka Bangla (Gurudwara Bangla Sahib), and other Jain temples. . . The tomb of Iltutmish with his white marble grave in the foreground, photographed in 1908-09. North-west of the Quwwatu'l-Islam Masjid is the tomb of Qutbu'd-Din Aibak's son-in-law and successor, Shamsu'd-Din Iltutmish. The tomb was built in 1235 by lltutmish himself, just a year before his death, and its arches and semi-domes reflect indigenous influence, but the decorative carvings on its entrances and interior follow Saracenic tradition. The tomb's main dome collapsed, perhaps due to faulty construction. Though it is believed that Firuz Shah Tughluq rebuilt the dome, even the replacement did not survive. . . #DelhiArchives #Delhi #DelhiMonuments #DelhiHistory #Qutubminar #Qutubcomplex #iltumishtomb #iltumish #qutbuddinaibak #qutubuddinaibak #Qutub #Mehrauli #OldIndianHistoryPhotos #indianhistoryphotos #IndianHistoryPics #HistoryofDelhi
