Holiday time is coming up quickly and I find myself daydreaming about it way too much. It also reminds me of how excited I was when I was a kid when a holiday was coming up. Especially going to the sea. I'd prep my clothes a few days before (like my mom taught me, with to-do lists) and oh boy, when the day came, you could not do anything to bring my excitement down. And once there, I'd spend hours playing in the water. Did anybody else's parents shout at them from the shore to "spend more time on the shore" instead of letting you just basically be a mermaid? 😅 Anyway...my favourite thing was playing around in the sea. Why does this design work? The simple answer is COMFORT! We are always on the lookout for a comfortable and safe space. It’s in our nature. Over time we have evolved and learned to build beautiful spaces to grow and happily live in. As a result, we invented many interior styles along the way. Why is that? Because we all see the world differently. Everything is subjective to us. What you like, I might not. The beauty of this is that it brings variety & creativity to this world. 🙌 But no matter the design style, one thing links them all together. And that is COMFORT! To come back to this interior – it works bc of the feeling of comfort it creates. This is achieved by the clever use of materials and textures. It’s a known fact that wood warms up any space. From a visual pov, using lighter types of wood helps to create a cosy feeling, while keeping things sophisticated at the same time. Pairing the wood with light, linen/cotton curtains, and bedding creates a feeling of lightness. The space feels bright (the linen curtains let natural light in), and the textures (of the beddings) create a feeling of cosiness, while the white paint on the wall creates a feeling of space. Because of this, you feel that you can breathe in this room. Last but not least, having the right light fixture can help to make the space feel more sophisticated. If the light was more shabby chic, for example, it would have created a different look altogether. And that is the beauty of interior design! Nothing beats a beautiful bathroom design! I always felt that if a bathroom is well designed, the rest of the home can look bad. I can take it (mentally) and live/work on the rest of the space until it's done. However, if the home is beautifully done but the bathroom doesn't look great, I feel there is something missing (and it's slowly making me sad - in other terms, it's an energy leak - iykyk). Is anybody else like that? Ps: this was a restaurant bathroom that I visited in London, but the point is the same. The places we live in affect us directly. I remember the first time I laid my eyes on a white flower when I was young. It made me want to be a flower girl in a flower shop. How can something so beautiful, that looks like snow, exist outside of winter? I was just in awe as a little kid. I think it was the first time that I realised the beauty of colour (even though white is not considered a colour) and the vastness of it & flowers in general. It was also the first time it dawned on me that there are so many different colours and types of flowers out there. That there is so much beauty in the world. If we just stop and see it. There is a saying that your life is as good as your mindset. And this could not be truer for the process of transforming your home. It’s the most under talked thing in my opinion. There are so many blog posts and influencers and books and interior designers talking about all the things to tick off a list when starting this process but so few (close to none) talk about the huge importance of coming with the right mindset into it. Working on your home will be the scariest interior design project you’ll ever work on because on a subconscious level you are threatening your own security by taking away your own safety and comfort zone. The only sure thing in this world is that everything changes, constantly. So with that in mind, remember that what feels scary to you now, it too shall pass. So to jump straight into it, here are the best 3 mindsets/thinking to have as you tackle redesigning your home: 1. Everything is temporary! So any stage that now feels scary (especially the striping part - more on this in another post), it will certainly pass. Remember change is constant, you won’t be stuck in a worst-case scenario forever, no matter how much your brain wants you to think so. 2. You are not alone - you have specialists with you, working to help you throughout this process (be it tradesmen, interior designers, friends, family, etc.). And even if you decide to do this on your own, remember that you can always, at any time, ask for help. You don’t have to redo your home alone! 3. Imagination is key! Being able to imagine how things will look when the project will be done is so important. It helps you to not give in to that fear we talked about in no. 1. This will also help you to stay on track and to remember that by the end of this transformation, you will be so happy because you will have the home you wanted! Nothing makes me instantly feel about comfort, calmness and peace, then a well done white interior. Don't get me wrong, a full-on white decor can become cold at times, and very "clinical". Especially if it lacks any deviations of colour or texture. But if you combine it with, let's say, the warmth of a wooden texture (especially a light one), then it creates the feeling of light, brightness, comfort and cosiness. Add a little gold (or brass) in there and some flowers, and you instantly raise the feeling of quality and sophistication. However, if you want to keep it casual, then adding "distressed" textures, such as the beddings in this picture (linen/cotton) will absolutely help with that. So all in all, what I am trying to say is I love this photo/design for the subtle sophistication it has, while at the same time prioritizing comfort and cosiness. 💛 What do you peeps think? Why does this design work? The simple answer is this: COMFORT! We are always on the lookout for a comfortable and safe space. It’s in our nature. Over time we have evolved and learned to build beautiful spaces to grow and live happily in. As a result, we invented many interior styles along the way. Why is that? Well, it’s because we all see the world differently. And everything is subjective to us. What you like might not be the same thing as I like. The beauty of this is that it brings variety and creativity to this world. 🙌🏻 But no matter the design style, one thing links them all together. And that is COMFORT! To come back to why this interior works – it’s because of that feeling of comfort you pick up right away. This is achieved by the clever use of materials and textures. It’s a known fact that wood warms up any space. From a visual pov, using lighter types of wood helps to create a cosy feeling, while keeping things sophisticated at the same time. Pairing the wood with light, linen/cotton curtains, and beddings create a feeling of lightness. The space feels bright (the linen curtains let natural light in), and the textures (of the beddings) create a feeling of cosiness, while the white paint on the wall helps to create a feeling of space. Because of this, you feel that you can breathe in this room. Lastly, but not least, having the right light fixture can help to make the space feel more sophisticated. If the light was more shabby chic, for example, it would have created a different look altogether. And that is the beauty of interior design! A dreamy interior! ✨ But what is a dreamy interior, exactly? If you had £1 million to spend on creating your dream interior, what would you want in your home? We all dream about those perfect IG/Pinterest homes. We think of what we see online or in magazines as the end goal of what they should look like. But the truth is that not all of us want the same interiors. Not all of us like minimalist homes, dark/bright homes, or a mix and match (a bit of everything). Perhaps you want something different, something that is yours and yours alone. A home to match your personality, a home that just feels like…HOME! No matter which type of home is your dream home, you must make sure that your space, above all else, works for you and your needs! Let’s take this (gorgeous) interior for example. It’s visually beautiful and you might like it, but you cannot quite put your finger on why that is exactly. There are multiple things going on here, but the most obvious one is the play of colours and materials. The use of 2 main colours, white and brown, help to create a balanced space, where you feel at ease, where you can breathe and just be. This feeling is also achieved through symmetry. There are 2 artwork/panels on the walls and 2 round coffee tables, both of a similar colour. The wooden part of the tables helps to ground the space, whereas the tops appear to be floating in the air. The white wool rug blends in with the sofa and acts as an extension of it. As a result, your eye can’t tell where one ends & another begins. In so, it creates a feeling of space. And because of the accessories chosen, it also creates a sense of cosiness. I've found this image yesterday from @websterarchitecture and instantly fell in love with it. And I kept looking at it I kept wondering what I love about it. Ofc there are many things that make this bedroom beautiful from a designer's pov, but I won't bore your with those now. But I will say this. It's THE FEELING that I got looking at it! It instantly transported me to a different place. A place where calm, sophistication, (colourful) minimalism and that slow living feeling just came to mind, and to my heart. And that is what interior design is all about. It's about the FEELINGS, the EMOTIONS that you feel in space. People are not aware of this effect or don't notice it straight away. I've always been drawn to Japanese aesthetics, but even more so since Architecture Uni (my last project was literally a multifunctional public space, designed in a modern, Japanese aeshetics). There is something magical about the way they create their interiors. There is always a beautiful mix of minimal and warmth, that just brings inner peace. Well, this can be applied to any (almost) any room really. That Friday mood (board)...when has the time gone by so quickly that it's already Friday? I can't believe next week we'll be in November. Seems like just yesterday was April or May. Is it just me or time has completely lost all its meaning (since the pandemic started and we all stayed at home 😅)? But one thing is for sure, spending mote and more time in our own little/bigger space, has allowed us to either grow or not (depending on your situation). It is so so important that your home works for you. I cannot stress this enough. Maybe you didn't notice this fact before the pandemic (when we used to go to work) but now, spending all of our time indoors, it imperative that your home makes you feel comfortable, safe, and it enhances your ability to work, live, dream and thrive. It feels like all of the sudden, our homes needed to transform and take on our "social life" as well. It had to adapt and accommodate more than the usual requirements. It's no longer just about having a nice space "to come home to". It has to allow you to be creative and thrive! After all, creativity and confidence start at home. I really do believe that. I could talk hours on this subject. And maybe I should, because I can't convey everything I want to say on the matter within the max 2200 characters IG will allow me. But as today is all about Friday and about slowing down to relax and get ready for the weekend ahead. So I'll just settle for some visual home inspiration instead. Sunday inspo! A gorgeous take on a modern bookcase (the Addison Bookcase Wall Units from Room and Board)! What I love about this bookshelf is the balance of materials used. It is exactly the reason why it works. Just imagine if this bookshelf had a back panel all the way to the top. It would have still been lovely, but it would have been "heavier", more robust, a bigger "presence" in the room. If it did not have a back panel at all, it would have had a more minimal look to it, feeling lighter, a more "subtle" presence in the room. Either options (including the one in the photo) are correct. There is no wrong option, you can't make a mistake. It all depends on the look you want to create in your room. That is the beauty of interior design. You can pick and choose, create and mould a space after your needs, but more importantly, after your own, unique, personality! And I am all about unlocking that, allowing my clients to channel their personality through their interiors. Why? I never done this before but I guess it was about time to start! Introducing my very first #shelfie photo while giving a shoutout to @cataloginteriors for their beautiful styling of these lovely shelves (from their previous showroom - I have yet to go to their new one, which looks so amazing online - it's on my to-do list 🙌🏻). What I absolutely love about this setting is the beautiful mix of warm, light wood and a dark colour bakground. Not everybody loves a darker colour in their space, but my gosh, what a big impact such a colour could make. You would be surprised how calm and excited could a dark colour make you feel in your own home. That is why I am sharing this gorgeous example! Also, the key element that makes this image work (would not have the same visual impact without it) is greenary! Adding plants, bringing the outside indoors, is what fundamentally makes a space feel comfortable, at ease and safe. Think about it. We need nature in our lives, we long for it. If it's one thing that this pandemic made us realise is how little time we spent before in nature. Being so busy in our day to day lives, it's easy to forget. Where do you always want to escape (or go on holiday)? To the sea, to the mountains, anywhere in nature!! It's how we recharge. It's about time we realise that nature is a part of us and without it we wouldn't really be the same. But getting back on point, you could easily change the feeling/atmosphere of any room in your home by introducing plants. It's quite a cost effective option, one that has a huge visual impact. Friday mood (board)! I've realised that ever since this pandemic started, I haven't taken one moment for myself to properly relax, recharge, rethink everything that is happening, and how I am going to go further. I've gone through (perhaps) all the stages of panic, stress, anxiety but also through relief, joy, and mindfulness. And I want to further explore the last part. So as of this Friday onward, I am taking a break from posting regularly. I am not going anywhere, I will still be here and of course, jump on the feed from time to time with a mood board here, a fabric board there, an IG story to let you know what I am doing (as I do have some projects in the works currently). But mostly, I am taking a break from the pressure of always having to post consistently and perform. I know that might end up hurting my engagement but I also want this to be fun again, and authentic (to me). So...see you back here sometime soon. Nooks and niches can be a problem when designing your own home. It's not too much space to create a proper area for a certain activity and not too small to just "fix" or fill with some potted plants. So what can you do? Well, the first thing you should think about is what activities do you want to do in that said room. For example, if it's a living room, do you want additional space to seat friends or guests when you have them over? Do you want a space to read in the morning or afternoon while sipping on a cup of coffee or tea? Or, if it's a bedroom, do you need extra storage space? Perhaps a place to sort out your next day outfit? The idea is to, first of all, find the functionality of the space in that niche. What do you want to use it for? That will then give you an idea of what to do next. Take this beautiful example. It's a gallery wall for displaying art and a reading corner or nook at the same time. Every space, niche or nook of the home can be useful. You just have to figure out what you want. I know that is the hardest part! 😅🤷 But trust me, the journey is worth it. I came across this beautiful interior and it made me stop and look at it for a few good seconds. I bet you did the same, right? But why is that? Let me explain why this works. The first thing that stopped me (and possibly you) is the overall sense/feeling that it's a very calm and serene place. And that was achieved by the use of white colour almost everywhere. Now the trick is to create warmth and a cosy feeling, so using linen curtains that let light in but at the same time offer privacy. . Complementing white with it's opposite non-colour black, in thin lines created an interesting contrast and attracts attention, while still keeping things looking simple and delicate. I am referring here to the floor and table lights, the curtain rods and the window frames. . Using wood is a brilliant way to introduce both colour and warmth to an interior while using plants and greenery introduces a natural element. This results in a lovely balance and in a feeling of having bits of nature indoors. . It's also a feature item, as in it draws your in. But the real beauty and feature of the room is that beautiful decorative mirror on the wall. Which brings interest to the room. . And lastly, the neutral rug that holds all the furniture pieces on tp of it. This is done so on purpose so it ties the whole room together and divides the space into zones (if there are different zones in the living room for different activities). . It acts as a coffee table and small storage space at the same time, making this an ideal piece to have, especially for those of us who live in small spaces/apartments (where every storage space you get is like finding gold). Weekend inspiration from the amazing mf+arquitetos who have created this stunning interior. What I like about this is the warmth created by using lots of wood and light colour materials such as rattan and concrete (although, technically concrete is anything but lightweight)! The luxury feeling comes from using marble (instead of an element of furniture, lighting or decorations). It's part of the house "structure" and it's something that will always be there & will always be a feature. Using a dark colour marble instead of a light one creates, in this case, a sense of calm and cosiness because it subconsciously invites the mind to relax. Compared to this, a white marble would have creates a sense of brightness, freshness and would have energised you. It just goes to show how important finishes are in a room and how it can influence your way of life, without you even knowing it.
