Another super fun week doing the #makingarteveryday challenge with @bardotbrush What I loved the most about this week is using my own photos for most of the pieces. Most I took exploring my new super small town, which was fun! I also got reacquainted with an old love: pen & ink and watercolour and/or coloured pencils. In my 20s & 30s, I filled sketchbooks with drawings of all my travels using these mediums and techniques. So fun! Hello InstaFam! Thought I’d share what was on my plate for April to help keep me on track. I have a bunch of stuff on the drawing board for this month which I am very excited about! The first of which is a new medium I’ve just started playing with - #woolfelt. I did a tiny piece last month (8” diameter) just to see how I felt about the medium and I LOVED it! I’m now working on my first large piece - 14.5” x 19”. I’m adding the picture of what’s been done so far, and the photograph my father took on one of his treks that I’m using as inspiration. It’s of a fresh water spring up in Sikkim which is in the north of India, bordering Nepal. The other piece I’m working on is a digital pen and ink of a pelican. I’m also setting up my #Etsy store for my #artprints that I’m hoping will go live sometime next week. Robert DeNiro as Jack Walsh from the film”Midnight Run” A lot of people rave about “The Godfather II” or similar intense dramatic roles like “The Mission,” “Cape Fear,” “Goodfellas,” and “Casino,” being their favorite DeNiro movie. These are all fantastic movies, and it’s hard to argue with his performance in those films. Still, for me, his role as Jack Walsh, a frustrated bounty hunter hunting down and catching the accountant (the late Charles Grodin) for an infamous Chicago mob boss, played by the late, great Dennis Farina, in “Midnight Run,” will always be one of my favorite DeNiro movies. It has it all: great acting, great comedy, intense drama, suspense, and entertaining action. For me, it’s one of those perfect films. He’s one of my favorite people to draw. He has such an expressive face. Luther Allison (August 17, 1939 – August 12, 1997) was an American blues guitarist. He was born in Widener, Arkansas, although some accounts suggest his actual place of birth was Mayflower, Arkansas. Allison was interested in music as a child, and during the late 1940s, he toured in a family gospel group called The Southern Travellers. He moved with his family to Chicago in 1951 and attended Farragut High School, where he was classmates with Muddy Waters’ son. He taught himself guitar and began listening to blues extensively. Three years later, he dropped out of school and began hanging around outside blues nightclubs with the hopes of being invited to perform. Allison played with the bands of Howlin’ Wolf and Freddie King, taking over King’s band when King toured nationally. Mance Lipsomb. Mance Lipscomb (April 9, 1895 – January 30, 1976) was an American blues singer, guitarist and songster. He was born Beau De Glen Lipscomb near Navasota, Texas. As a youth he took the name Mance (short for emancipation) from a friend of his oldest brother, Charlie. His father had been born into slavery in Alabama; his mother was half African American and half Native American.[4] His father left home when he was a child, so he had to leave school after the third grade to work in the fields alongside his mother. For most of his life, Lipscomb supported himself as a tenant farmer in Texas. His mother bought him a guitar and he taught himself to play by watching and listening. I remember being about 6 years old when I first saw a therapist. My brother and I were there together. The therapist gave me some puppets to play with while she asked questions. I was, however, more focused on my brother who was upside down in his chair, his head hanging back. My young mind couldn’t understand why he did that. I don’t remember how long I saw the therapist but it was filled with numerous sessions where I could draw and create art. Looking back now I wonder if that’s where my passion for art took root. It offered me a means to express myself and feel secure in an environment that wasn’t my house because at the time our house was perpetually targeted by one of California’s most notorious serial killers, Joseph James DeAngelo, known at the time as The East Area Rapist and now as The California State Killer. I embraced any opportunity to escape reality because home was a fearful place. I often sink back into that little girl while I’m drawing. Now, as an adult, art is my way of processing life’s complexities. I can’t even begin to describe the laser focus I have when I drop into this kind of flow state and stay there for hours. It’s a kind of out-of-body experience. It’s wild. I believe those sessions have deeply therapeutic value even now as an adult. But it’s a weird state of presence. One that makes time go too fast. And time is precious to me now. Sometimes I wonder if art is stealing living seconds from me. Gregory Hines. Gregory Oliver Hines (February 14, 1946 – August 9, 2003) was an American dancer, actor, choreographer, and singer. He is one of the most celebrated tap dancers of all time.
