Remember back in early 2023 when the federal government announced it was mulling a possible ban on gas appliances? It instantly touched off a firestorm of criticism, with Texas Congressman Ronny Jackson vowing that if anyone came for his stove, they would have to “pry it from my cold dead hands.” To me, this was an apt metaphor for how overheated, and silly, our politics can be. Ironically, the phrase “cooking with gas ”– the title of my upcoming album and its lead song – originated in a gas industry advertising campaign from the late 1930s that tried to convince the American people that cooking with their product was the “classy” thing to do. The 2023 kerfuffle was what triggered me to write the song “Cooking with Gas” and, with recording sessions already on the calendar, we recorded it three weeks later. The phrase has also come to mean “hitting one’s stride” or doing something really well, so it seemed natural for the album title! [📸: @emreportss]

Yesterday was the historic “Mother of the Blues”, Ma Rainey’s birthday! Ma Rainey, born Gertrude Pridgett on April 26, 1886, in Columbus, GA, was one of the earliest Black professional blues singers and one of the first to record. She earned the title “Mother of the Blues” for her pioneering contributions to the genre. She began performing in minstrel shows and vaudeville in her teens, showcasing her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence. In the 1920s, she signed with Paramount Records and recorded numerous blues hits, including “Bo-Weevil Blues” and “See See Rider.” Her bold and assertive singing style, combined with her candid lyrics about life’s hardships and joys, resonated with audiences across the country. She was a mentor to many up-and-coming blues artists, including Bessie Smith. HEY LOCO FANS – Blues and soul singer Ann Peebles was born April 27, 1947 in Kinloch, Missouri. She gained popularity for her Memphis soul albums of the 1970s while signed to Hi Records. Her most successful single includes "I Can't Stand the Rain", which she wrote with her husband Don Bryant and radio broadcaster Bernie Miller. As a child she began singing in the choir of her father's church and with the family's group, the Peebles Choir, who regularly opened shows for gospel stars including Mahalia Jackson and the Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke. She was also influenced by R&B performers, including Muddy Waters, Mary Wells and Aretha Franklin. She began performing in clubs in St. Louis, and in 1968, she sang in a club with trumpeter Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, a popular local bandleader known for helping other musicians. Miller introduced her to Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell, who quickly offered her a recording contract. Her first record, "Walk Away" reached the R&B chart in 1969, as did the follow-up, "Give Me Some Credit". She began working with the Hi label's songwriter Don Bryant, with whom she began a relationship and married in 1974. She continued to have R&B hits including "I Pity the Fool," "Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love," "Breaking Up Somebody's Home," and "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down". After Hi Records closed in 1979, and with the rise of disco music, Peebles took a 10 year break from the music industry to spend more time with her family. She returned to recording again in 1989 with a variety of labels. She continued to perform, and in 2006 she released the album Brand New Classics, which consisted of re-recordings of some of her songs in an acoustic style. Peebles also joined Cyndi Lauper on a recording of "Rollin' and Tumblin'" on Lauper's 11th studio album, Memphis Blues. Where have you gone Jonny Lang? Jonny was one of my favorites growing up. After discovering Stevie Ray Vaughan, I found him and the classic “Lie To Me” album right after discovering Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “Ledbetter Heights.” Two guys only a few years older than me playing kick ass blues rock? My mind was blown. Since then, I’ve been a huge fan. His style is to unleash ferocity with complete abandon, whether it’s his tremendous singing or his wildly passionate guitar playing. Jonny likes to test you because he likes to experiment. He’s danced through all sorts of genres through the years (blues, rock, pop, funk, rnb, folk, gospel, Christian, etc.) and I’ve loved every step of that journey. Which brings us to 2017’s “Signs.” “Signs” is one of Jonny’s best and shows what makes him special. Screaming guitar. Impassioned vocals. Soul. Grit and sheen. Great grooves and songs. Did I mention soul? It’s a perfect mixture of all the styles he’s done through the years. Sadly, we haven’t heard from Jonny since 2021ish, as he has had vocal issues that caused him to completely stop. He’s also seemed to go completely radio silent. I hate it for him and I hope he’s doing well. I also hope he will return one day. Until then, we have 7 albums and a live album full of fantastic music. Come back if you can Jonny…

HEY LOCO FANS - The "Mother of the Blues" "Ma" Rainey was born April 22, 1866. She's one of the earliest African-American professional blues singers and one of the first generation of blues singers to record. Ma Rainey wasn’t the first blues singer to make records, but by all rights she should have been. In an era when women were the marquee names in blues, Rainey was once the most celebrated of all; the “Mother of the Blues” had been singing the music for more than 20 years before she made her recording debut on Paramount in 1923. With the advent of blues records, she became even more influential, immortalizing such songs as “See See Rider,” “Bo-Weavil Blues,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Like the other classic blues divas, she had a repertoire of pop and minstrel songs as well as blues, but she maintained a heavier, tougher vocal delivery than the cabaret blues singers who followed. Rainey’s records featured her with jug bands, guitar duos, and bluesmen such as Tampa Red and Blind Blake, in addition to jazz-band accompaniment, including Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, and Fletcher Henderson. Although her recording career lasted only a mere six years, from 1923 to 1929, she recorded over 100 songs and many of them, including “C.C. Rider” and “Bo Weavil Blues,” became genuine blues classics. After reaching the height of her popularity in the late ’20s, Rainey’s career faded away by the early ’30s as female blues singing became less popular. She retired from performing in 1933, settling down in her hometown of Columbus. In 1939, Rainey died of a heart attack. She left behind an immense recorded legacy, which continued to move and influence successive generations of blues, country, and rock & roll musicians.
