Actually only standard for the mid 90s My second dinosaur fever lasted about four years and was sparked by Jurassic Park in 1993. The news that dinosaurs would be animated in a movie as realistically as never before electrified me again. In addition, Michael Crighton's books presented a picture of dinosaurs that was a complete surprise to anyone - who, like me, had been on hiatus for a long time. That the whole thing was intertwined with the then-hip chaos theory and a warning about genetic engineering and evil corporations made it all the more fascinating. I didn't bother to check out the info at the time. So the book and movie were able to get away with plenty of florid nonsense. Too-small, venom-spitting collar lizards, T-Rex only seeing movement, or how can he face the Gallimus herd alone if he first makes them flee from him. Of course, from 1995 on, the feathers were missing from the much too large velociraptors, which also could not push open any door handles. In case of doubt it was only an insufficient invention of genetic engineering or the fault of the used frog DNA. We were simply impressed. I'm still surprised at how many images and themes from the films have stuck with us to this day. The hype surrounding the film has given the whole of dinosaur research a boost and relevance and inspired countless people. So the makers are forgiven for all the Hollywood horror blockbuster nonsense. And back then, the fever only lasted until the second film in 1997. I haven't seen the third part in the cinema in 2001. Because the third, more violent fever began again only in 2012.
old fashioned - but beautiful In keeping with the previous two posts, here's another look at the past. Because actually these Diplodocus figures with their posture especially the tails are out of time. By now the tail tips would have to whip high up in the air. The necks would also be held somewhat lower, though not as horizontally as they were 10 years ago. Instead, the necks would now be thicker and the base of the neck wider. Meanwhile, points would also accentuate the line of the spine from head to tail. The bones found are still the same as they were 120 years ago, but the flavor of interpretation keeps changing. Nevertheless, these figures remain beautiful and were a huge step forward in 1974 compared to the Marx brontosaur and its Chinese copy, which was in my childhood room at the time. But how could I have gotten this model from the Invicta company in 1974 if one was not at home in the store of the Natural History Museum in London and instead only knew the toy store in Osnabrück in detail? For the Natural History Museum in London, this figure was especially important because the exhibited skeleton of "Dippy" has been one of the museum's stars since Andrew Carnegie gave a cast of his original to King Edward VII as a gift. Because this cast was as heavy as the fossilized original, a free-flying mounting of the tail was almost an impossibility. Statics alone made regrinding the tail a practical solution. Even if it made no functional sense. The current representation of a balanced equilibrium of head and tail is much more plausible. And the idea that the tail tip could be whipped as a defense weapon, reaching near sonic speeds, is an appealing one. As I mentioned, during my first dinosaur fever in the 70s, I didn't know this Diplodocus. Therefore, I did not acquire these figures antiquarian until about 10 years ago during my third Dinofieber. And committed the sacrilege of painting the originally plain sauropods myself. The motif was created with the help of a photo by Galyna Andrushko via Shutterstock.
Play it again, Sam. On German television, Torsten Sträter recaptures his childhood under this title when he buys the toys from childhood days on Ebay for bigger money to present them in the "Mach es noch einmal Sam" column. That is exactly what I have done here. Because this is exactly again the first dinosaur set with eight figures, which I got in the early 70s. With it, I was able to live out my dinosaur enthusiasm in a plastic way, and in addition to primeval adventures, the dinos appeared alongside cowboys and Indians in the city traffic of matchbox cars. The figures were so unique because there was little other way to get dinosaur figures in the province at the time, as Schleich didn't release its first dinosaurs until 1994. (This is shown by @dino.everything , when he chronologically shows his great collection, which starts around that time). Also, the figures exactly matched the illustrations in my first dinosaur book from WAS IST WAS. The set is a China replica of the first dinosaur figures from the Marx company from the 60s. So the T-Rex still has three fingers on the front claw and the Allosaurus looks like an upright little dog or like the monsters with zipper on the belly from Japanese monster movies, which I could experience as a child in the cinema on Sunday mornings at reduced prices. There, Godzilla alternated weekly with Bud Spencer. A Trachodon as a duck-billed dinosaur is now completely out of fashion. Name, head shape and posture do not exist today, just like the flat head deep above the ground of the Stegosaurus, which by the way still had two brains at that time. A walnut-sized one in the head for the front part and a second one in the pelvis for the tail with the thagomizer. Why a Dimetrion from the Permian got lost here, probably not even the Chinese copyists knew. But also otherwise there are some liberties to admire. How should the prehistoric people from the colorful printed cardboard ever hunt down a dinosaur, when there are a mere 100 million years in between? (It still goes on in the comments …)
A journey into the past. This is my first book about dinosaurs from 1972. The German WAS-IST-WAS book was still a translation of the American HOW & WHY. Only later were updated editions of volume 15 published, which Tessloff Verlag had written by German authors. This book was for a long time my most important information about dinosaurs. So in the Jurassic the Allosaurus - upright like a kangaroo - already hunted everything that was not at three on the palm fern. But it could not reach Brontosaurus, because the huge sauropod had to live in the water to carry its enormous weight. The Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't have an easy life in the Cretaceous either. The Ankylosaurus beats its head with the tail club and the Triceratops pokes its soft belly with its horn. Again, the upright posture is not an advantage. I was all the more amazed when a few years later I got another dinosaur book, which was a translation of an English book, curated by the Natural History Museum in London. Because there were suddenly so many new dinosaurs and some old acquaintances suddenly behaved quite differently. There was only the first necessary change of the secured believed "knowledge". Now 50 years later the heroes of the cover look already somewhat differently. This journey into the past is inspired by @dino.everything , who leads chronologically through his growing dinosaur enthusiasm, showing the books and dinosaur figures of his collection. An exciting and thrilling journey that shows how the image of prehistoric times is always changing, even in children's rooms. It's worth staying tuned.
