This funerary monument at Nudgee Cemetery has some interesting iconography beginning with the draped cross. Anything draped indicates sorrow or mourning, which is why you see so many urns and crosses draped. I found this lovely Celtic Cross at Nudgee Cemetery and Crematorium, which is owned by the Corporation of the Trustees of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane. The presence of a Celtic Cross means chances are good that the grave’s resident had Irish heritage and this is even more certain in a Catholic cemetery in Queensland due to the surge in Irish immigrants between the late 18th century and the late 19th century. Also of interest is the fact that cremations have only been allowed by the Catholic Church since 1963, when the ashes had to be buried in a ‘sacred place’ not scattered or kept at home.
