#FoxFriday I was so thankful when this little vixen decided to dip down into the shadowed and still snowy embankment. With this winter being the warmest on record for Hokkaido, snow was a bit hard to come by, especially enough that the usually tall grasses were covered or at least bent. Finding clean compositions and then having the wildlife cooperate in positioning themselves within those frames was a challenge. Northern Cardinal female. No argument here that the male Northern Cardinal is one of the most strikingly beautiful birds we have here in Georgia and North America, but often overlooked is the female Northern Cardinal. Although females are more muted in color as they are the ones who must blend in as they sit on nest, the highlights in the feathers are simply beautiful to me. I have 4 or 5 pairs in the yard currently and love seeing them come to the feeder, and appreciate them stopping by for a portrait! Tufted Titmouse. I have a friend that tries to post an image of a Tufted Titmouse every Tuesday calling it Titmouse Tuesday. I like the idea, so I might do it every once in a while. I have lots of Tufted Titmouse in the yard, they may actually be my most common bird that I see. In a month or so they will be by far the noisiest in the yard as the babies like to let their presence be known as they beg for food. They are fun to watch as they do some silly things that often have them hanging upside down from a branch. Feeling insignificant under the stars at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. This was the night after the amazing display of Aurora Australis. I have really opened up the shadows on this one to see if there was any colours captured without playing with the tint and colour adjustment. The wing span on these magnificent birds is nothing short of impressive. Steller's Sea Eagles are often easy to spot by their dark bodies, contrasting white features, and bright-yellow bill. It is believed that they are glacial relics that have evolved throughout the years. Red-bellied Woodpecker. Woodpeckers get somewhat of a bad rap in the bird world. Sure they can be known to damage the siding on a house extracting the bugs that have gotten into the wood, or drumming on a house to attract a mate, but they are very important birds for a balance. When they peck holes on your house, they are actually letting you know you have an insect issue by the way. When they do the same thing to trees they are helping the tree to break down and eventually feed other insects and plants as well. I have found that hanging a shiny aluminum pie tin near where they peck usually gets them to stop. If you are worried about your neighbors giving you odd looks because you have a pie tin hanging from your house, well, you might live too close to the neighbors. Wood Duck pair. By far one of the prettiest ducks has to be the Wood Duck. The male is incredible and colorful, the female no less beautiful with the subtle and hidden colors, but the feather pattern is fantastic. When my friend, George, stopped at a pond on our way to photograph the Prothonotary Warbler we spotted several Wood Ducks swimming. When we got down to the water we were happy to see there were 8 of them!
