We all know Mickey is the leader of the club! However, during the 1930s Mickey Mouse wasn't the leader. Steamboat Willie was Mickey Mouse's 3rd cartoon to be in but it was not love at first Mouse for the world. Two big ideas caused Mickey Mouse to become a worldwide sensation and a flop at the same time; the original 1930s Mickey Mouse Club and overproducing cartoons with the same plot line. By the mid-1930s; everyone knew who Mickey Mouse was but it wasn't good. People got tired of Mickey laughing his way out of trouble and never being able to do anything bad; after all, Mickey is the good guy and can't be disrespectful or throw the first punch let alone any for that matter. It wasn't until June of 1934 that audiences would see an aggressive character who took care of problems while creating a few of his own with his temper and not the villain but Mickey's close friend; Donald Duck! Upon seeing this fresh face in the cartoons that could react to situations in a more relatable manner; Donald Duck soared in merchandise sales and cartoons to the point where Walt had to pull Mickey Mouse cartoons back to protect his identity. Later in the 1930s; Walt cracked the code of putting Mickey, Donald, and Goofy together and letting them play to their strengths! Unfortunately between WWII, studio strikes, and overspending on full-length animated features caused Mickey Mouse and the others to go into hiding until there was a Renaissance-era when people could see their favorite Disney characters face to face in a magical kingdom in the mid-1950s! I love the fact the Disneyland Paris has their partner statue in the Studio park, I belive because the orginal idea of Walt Disney Studios was a behind the scenes/ making of movies.
