Tusker House at Animal Kingdom is hands down one of my favorite character dining experiences! You can see Mickey, Goofy, Donald and Daisy dressed in their safari gear. The African inspired food does not disappoint, it’s always on my list of recommendations!! If you’re on the fence about character dining, DO IT. It’s a great way to see characters at the park and they come to you! It makes making memories even more magical ✨

Check out my stories for a photo of a 3 year old Dakari from @virginiazoo Jan 2012 A young African lion will be leaving the Virginia Zoo on Thursday and heading to Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando for a potential breeding situation. According to a Virginia Zoo news release, Dakari, a juvenile male lion, was born at the Zoo on May 2, 2009 to father Mramba and mother Zola, along with two other male cubs and one female cub, in their second litter. Dakari is the last of the siblings to move to a new home. The other male cubs went to the Pittsburgh Zoo and the female went to the Knoxville Zoo. Dakari is being moved as part of the Species Survival Program to a potential future breeding situation. The move also frees up Dakari's parents to breed again. Species Survival Programs are designed to help endangered species through a range of activities, including cooperative breeding, research, public education, fundraising and field conservation projects. Lions are the second largest living cat after tigers. With some males exceeding 550 pounds, Dakari weighs 438 pounds. Greater Kudu This beautiful female antelope is named Seven. All the greater kudu and bongo on Kilimanjaro Safaris are currently females. Greater kudu are browsing herbivores, eating leaves, flowers, fruits, tubers and shoots from a variety of trees, bushes, grasses, herbs and vines. Their large ears are extremely sensitive to noise, making these shy antelope difficult to approach. Under normal circumstances, kudu will sneak away and hide from potential enemies. Corra 🐘 Have you seen this little girl on Kilimanjaro Safaris yet? Baby elephants stay very close to their mothers for the first couple of months. The calves drink their mother's milk for about two years, sometimes longer. They drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day! At about four months old, they also begin eating some plants, like adult elephants, but they continue to need as much milk from their mother. They keep drinking milk for up to ten years! At first, baby elephants don't really know what to do with their trunks. They swing them to and fro and sometimes even step on them. Mandrill A rare safari sighting for me. Mandrills use their teeth for defense, but they also expose them as a greeting. With most animals, baring of teeth is a warning of aggressive behavior to come. With mandrills, it is more often a friendly smile, much like how humans communicate. They are found predominantly in western and central parts of Africa, residing in rainforests and, occasionally, savannahs. The largest population is found in Gabon, a country located on the west coast of Africa. There has been so much added since then, with Expedition Everest and Avatar: Land of Pandora. And Dinoland USA, an opening day section of the park, is slated to start construction on a complete redo, adding South America to existing Africa and Asia lands. Happy 26th Anniversary Animal Kingdom Only one more day until Earth Day 2024 and the Anniversary of my favorite Walt Disney World theme park. The drive down into the west savanna is supposed to be the dramatic visual highlight of the safari. For me, this particular landscape view is my favorite. On this morning, it was dazzling. I have seen so many combinations of skies and animals on my hundreds of safaries. I have seen it shrouded in a blanket of peaceful fog, drenched in water during afternoon Florida, I mean, African thunderstorms, scorching mid-day sun, golden sunrises and sunsets and even at night during nighttime Safaris. I have seen running giraffes, sable antelope, zebra, Patterson’s eland, wildebeest and pronking springbok. This scene is never the same on any two trips and is why I always look forward to my next safari. Thank you to Walt Disney, who had the original vision of an attraction like this and to the imagineers, animal experts and construction crews that brought it to life. Thank you to the veterinary teams, nutritionists and zookeepers that care for the animals that live here. Thank you to the drivers who teach us about the animals, conservation and what we can do to be better stewarts of our planet. Corra 🐘 Happy 26th Anniversary to Disney's Animal Kingdom. The addition of this little girl this year has had a huge impact on the safari. Drivers and guests alike get all giddy when there's a Corra sighting. While I missed her on two Caring for Giants tours, I have had some luck on safari rides. At birth, calves weigh between 198–265 pounds (90–120 kilograms) and are about three feet (one meter) tall. They are usually covered in hair. Calves can usually stand on their own about 30 minutes after birth and walk on their own about an hour later. Calves drink their mother's milk for the first several months of their life, and then start eating vegetation such as leaves, fruits, and branches as they get older. Cheetah girls How adorable is this? It is often difficult to catch the cheetahs in a good place to photograph them. So when I saw them like this, I was beyond thrilled. I also knew I had an Animal Kingdom 26th anniversary photo. Adult cheetahs’ weight averages between 75 and 125 pounds. They can measure from 40 to 60 inches in length, measured from the head to the hind quarters. The tail can add a further 24 to 32 inche, bringing the total overall length up to 7.5 feet. On average, cheetahs stand 28 to 36 inches tall at the shoulder. Cheetahs have a thin frame with a narrow waist and deep chest. They have large nostrils that allow for increased oxygen intake. Cheetahs have large lungs and hearts connected to a circulatory system with strong arteries and adrenals that work in tandem to circulate oxygen through their blood very efficiently. With its long legs and very slender body, the cheetah is quite different from all other cats and is the only member of its genus, Acinonyx. Nile Hippopotamus 🦛 Happy #safiriversunday Life on the river is pretty relaxing during the day. During daylight hours, hippos spend almost all of their time wallowing in shallow water. In the evening, after the hot sun has set, hippos come out of the water for a night of grazing. Hippos are definitely adapted for life in the water and are found living in slow-moving rivers and lakes in Africa. With their eyes, ears, and nostrils on the top of the head, hippos can hear, see, and breathe while most of their body is underwater. Hippos also have a set of built-in goggles: a clear membrane covers their eyes for protection while still allowing them to see when underwater. Their nostrils close, and they can hold their breath for five minutes or longer when submerged. Careful boys! So many park guests are quick to misidentify these savanna residents as Hyenas. Nope, not even in the same family. With an impressive 80 percent success rate, African wild dogs are among Africa’s most effective predators. Lions only prevail around 30 percent of the time. Even with their finely honed hunting skills, African wild dogs count among the world’s most endangered mammals. According to the IUCN Red List, only around 6,600 wild dogs remain - mostly in Tanzania, northern Mozambique, and southern Africa. Kilimanjaro Safaris 🐘 🦁🦓🦏🦛🦩 As the 26th anniversary of Disney's Animal Kingdom approaches, I wanted to let all the cast members know how much I appreciate them. Dakari 💛, Kinsey 🖤 and Kamari 💛 The loss of Kinsey this past year really hit me hard. The sisters are such incredible apex predators and it was always fun to watch them show their tender side as they playfully interacted with each other. Kinsey always seemed to be the first to roar. It was like yawning, she got the others going. I cherish the time I still get to spend with Dakari and Kamari. These incredible cats demonstrate how to conserve energy. Lions are carnivores and the large amounts of protein they consume take a LOT of effort to digest. Kicking the week off... with the Hartmann's mountain zebra girls. Cricket and Dot were kicking up their heels as they entered the savanna for the day. A cast member saw my camera and was kind enough to give me my own row during the light morning safari attendance. This allowed me to capture this moment out the right side of the truck. If you follow me, you know that the left side of row 3 is my go-to spot in the truck. I find it offers the best cheetah and lion views with the least amount of bouncing and no canopy post to prevent look back photos. However, I often miss out on right side photos because of this preference. But my own row allowed bonus photos of the okapi, wildebeest and zebra on this safari. #safiriversunday 🦛🦛 When I rope drop safari, the girls are typically lined up on the backside of the island for some naps. On this safari, they were out front on the near side of the island hut off in the distance. It made for a unique looking photo - one of my new faves from the river. The name hippopotamus comes from the ancient Greek term for “river horse”, thanks mostly to the fact that these animals spend up to 16 hours a day submerged in rivers, lakes or any type of shallow water source. Given the amount of time they spend in water, it’s obvious that hippos love the water, and by love, they really love soaking in water and basking under the sun. Kilimanjaro Safaris 🦓🦓 Let's talk about framing and cropping for a moment. Whether I am adjusting the framing while taking a photo or cropping in post editing, I am always torn about how wide or how tight my shots should be. Wider gives perspective (oh look, I can tell where this is and what's happening) while a tighter shot shows all the beautiful details (especially animals) at the expense of the perspective and setting. With the exception of landscapes, I generally prefer tighter photos even if they don't necessarily reveal that they are from Animal Kingdom. Anyone can get wide photos on their phone. I prefer the impact of tighter photos. These are all from the exact same photo, just different crops. Which do you prefer and why? I am curious to hear some feedback on what you prefer as a photographer or when you are viewing photos from others. Normally, I try to minimize cropping and frame what I hope is the final image when I take the photo. Auntie Luna and Corra 🐘 It has been so amazing to have a new baby elephant on the savanna. How crazy will it be next year when there are two more babies? Both Luna and Kianga are expecting in 2025. I'll be praying that moms and babies do well during pregnancy and birth. African elephants are pregnant for up to 22 months. This is actually the longest gestation period of all mammals, which makes sense when we think about how big elephants are. A blue whale is only pregnant for 10-12 months, nearly half the length of an elephant pregnancy. 🦒 Black and White Wednesday: Animal Edition! 🦒 Let's be honest here, despite this cute little giraffe, this was the worst safari we have EVER been on. And it's not because of the animals outside, it was because of the animals INSIDE the safari vehicle 😅 We were sitting with the most obnoxious, rude and loud, group of humans, and the whole experience was ruined. We couldn't hear a thing the driver was saying, they were standing in the vehicle, loud video calling friends, screaming, etc etc. We almost asked for a new safari but it was the end of the day and we needed a drink after that ride. But, at least we've got this cute little giraffe pic. Thanks, giraffe. (TBH the other animals probably ran when they heard us coming) Anyway, don't be the people that ruin the experience for others. Kilimanjaro Safaris Not my typical KS post. On this visit we had a 9am Caring for Giants tour. The safari didn't open until 8:30am, so there was no time for a pre-tour safari. So we used this time to visit the gorillas at the safari exit. It also gave me a chance to enjoy the details here and get these empty park photos of the safari exit area. I love that this ride doesn't exit to a gift shop. Deanna The mandrill sightings have been nothing more than distant fleeting glimpses for me for months now. So on this multiple safari end of day visit, I figured a back row right side trip wasn't going to matter. Then, it became the only recent safari that the mandrills were out 😬. Not the sharpest photos but such a sweet moment seeing one of the elderly ladies enjoying some blossoms in the yard. Guess i am sticking with the left side always. Thank you @jambojessie for the ID ❤️ I prefer truck rows 2 thru 4 for their lower bouncing (the back row is a trampline). Row 3 has become my favorite because there is no post next to me - this makes continuing to get photos as we drive past much easier. And the left side is a must for me because it's the cat side. I do pay the price on the west savanna with giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and eland - but Corra and the east savanna cats make up for it. Cheetah 🐆 I was able to snap a photo of this beautiful cheetah girl that was looking back at me. We were on the Wild Africa Trek truck that had pulled off on to one of the side roads. So, while it was still a distant shot, I wasn't bouncing around and was able to use a slower shutter speed and get a nice crispy photo with lower ISO. Caring For Giants 🐘 So what do you do when you arrive at the viewing area and there are no elephants to be found? Credit will be given for those who answered panic, cry or cuss. I used this as an opportunity to photograph the viewing area itself. Swipe to see a 180 degree view of what you see from this side of the elephant yard (minus the elephants). It is a relatively long path with a wide range of views to accommodate that the elephants have a lot of room to roam around. A lot happens and changes during the 30 minutes at this viewing area. Just like a safari, everything that happens is unscripted. The animals can go where they want and do what they want. Every tour will be different - and that's the magic of the time you spend here. Nobody else will have the same exact experience - it's YOUR special moment just for you. The elephant ladies did show up eventually and we had a wonderful time watching them. Stella even had a situation where she got spooked by something and trumpeted to call the adults over for help. No confirmation if it was a bee 😆 I hope my photos and information help you decide if this experience is for you. I never imagined I would pay extra for a tour like this, I am so glad we tried this one just to see what they are like.
