They’re so incredibly cool. 🐟Pink backed pelicans get their names from a pink patch on their backs that is most prominent during their mating season. The pink you see is secreted from glands in their skin and spread around as they preen themselves. Think of it like putting on their best outfit for a first date. 🐟Pelicans can use their gular pouch, the large pouch below their bills, like a net. They will scoop fish (and anything else small enough to fit) into their pouch, squeeze the water out, and swallow those fish whole. What a great mental image for you. Additionally, anything— and I do mean anything— small enough to fit into a pelican’s pouch is fair game. They are not picky eaters. 🐟Did you know? Pelicans have been around for roughly 30 million years. The oldest known fossils of them date back to between 30-35 MYA, which is also halfway back to the dinosaurs. Check out my stories for a photo of a 3 year old Dakari from @virginiazoo Jan 2012 A young African lion will be leaving the Virginia Zoo on Thursday and heading to Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando for a potential breeding situation. According to a Virginia Zoo news release, Dakari, a juvenile male lion, was born at the Zoo on May 2, 2009 to father Mramba and mother Zola, along with two other male cubs and one female cub, in their second litter. Dakari is the last of the siblings to move to a new home. The other male cubs went to the Pittsburgh Zoo and the female went to the Knoxville Zoo. Dakari is being moved as part of the Species Survival Program to a potential future breeding situation. The move also frees up Dakari's parents to breed again. Species Survival Programs are designed to help endangered species through a range of activities, including cooperative breeding, research, public education, fundraising and field conservation projects. Lions are the second largest living cat after tigers. With some males exceeding 550 pounds, Dakari weighs 438 pounds. While not fully endangered, White Rhinos are still being poached for their horns, so it can be sold on the black market for traditional chinese medicine. 📸Western Lowland Gorilla: Grace 💚 This is a little bit of an older photo because today snuck up on me but HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRACE!! Time flies when you’re having fun and this little one is, indeed, always having fun. Whether it be hanging out with parents Gino and Kashata or babysitting little sister Ada, Grace is always having a blast. 🦍Although Grace is older now and has no issues whatsoever with climbing (as is obvious by the fact that she and Ada often climb close to the top of the almost 50-foot tall trees in the family yard), when she was little(r) she was slow to develop her climbing skills. Her keeper team monitored her progress carefully and, eventually, a decision was made to involve child development therapists. They were able to help her care team to better track and understand her developmental struggles and also create a plan for how to help her overcome them. And, considering how well she climbs now, I think it’s safe to say they did a fantastic job. It also just goes to show how similar to us gorillas truly are. You can see footage of all that and more featured in Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom on Disney+. 🦍Grace was named after a nonprofit gorilla rehabilitation center of the same name. GRACE, which stands for the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center, is located in eastern DRC and is responsible for monitoring nearby populations of Grauer’s gorillas, a subspecies of eastern gorillas endemic to the mountainous eastern Congo. GRACE takes in gorillas orphaned by poaching and raises them before releasing them into their education center’s population of other previously orphaned gorillas. They are working towards the goal of reintroducing Grauer’s gorillas with their entirely Congolese staff who work directly with the local people to help educate them and implement lasting change. Disney Day 3! It was a solo park day for me on Monday because Christian had to work. I stayed in bed a little too late to make it for rope drop at Animal Kingdom so no Flight of Passage for me. 😫 Instead I had a very leisurely (if not still active day) starting with the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. After that I headed to the Wildlife Express Train and made the journey to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. I was intending on taking a drawing class at Conservation Station but walked by the Veterinary Treatment Room first and saw that they would be doing an exam on a Eurasion Widgeon in a few minutes. Myself and fellow viewers watched for about an hour as the Vets took a look at the duck’s legs to assess it for arthritis treatment. After that I had a quick lunch (Tacos from The Smiling Crocodile,) saw Kevin, took some photos in front of the Tree of Life and headed over to the Kilimanjaro Safaris. There were lots of active animals on our journey. Greater kudu are browsing herbivores, eating leaves, flowers, fruits, tubers and shoots from a variety of trees, bushes, grasses, herbs and vines. Their large ears are extremely sensitive to noise, making these shy antelope difficult to approach. Under normal circumstances, kudu will sneak away and hide from potential enemies. 📸African Cheetah 🐆Back in the 70s, there was a myth that cheetahs would only run at top speed in short bursts to prevent themselves from overheating— as in baking their insides. This has since been proven to be false; cheetahs are able to thermoregulate very effectively even while pursuing prey. Science has actually shown that their internal body temperature doesn’t really change all that much before/after pursuing and even catching prey. That is what they’re made for, after all. 🐆So why are cheetahs often seen as being anxious and panting excessively after catching dinner? Well, they might not be baking their brains but they’re still tired. The panting is also one of their most effective ways of maintaining that steady body temperature. 📸African Cheetah Since there aren’t a whole lot of photos of the cheetah girls out there due to them being a little more difficult to photograph, I figured I should start pulling my weight and posting more of the photos I’ve gotten of them. I usually have pretty good luck photographing them which is nice since they’re one of my top 3 on the Reserve. 🐆Contrary to what some might hear, cheetahs are more social than is commonly believed. Current science and observations show that it’s fairly common for male cheetahs to live together in what’s called a coalition; this could be a group of brothers who stayed together after leaving mom or similarly aged males defending the same territory. For the females, they are more often seen living alone but commonly in overlapping territories with other females. The current speculation is that they are most commonly solitary due to resource scarcity, especially during the dry season. But the females who do have overlapping territories are observed to not be aggressive with other females (The Smithsonian). 🐆Speaking of prey scarcity: cheetahs often fall victim to retaliatory hunting from hunters who catch cheetahs going after their livestock or even just lingering too close to their properties. This is something that would be easy to get mad at farmers for, and to some extent I DO get mad, but they also need to protect their livelihood. Conservation organizations are helping to reduce these conflicts by providing livestock guardian dogs like Anatolian Shepherds and Kangals to these farmers free of charge to deter predators and stop the conflict before it even starts. Corra 🐘 Have you seen this little girl on Kilimanjaro Safaris yet? Baby elephants stay very close to their mothers for the first couple of months. The calves drink their mother's milk for about two years, sometimes longer. They drink up to 3 gallons of milk a day! At about four months old, they also begin eating some plants, like adult elephants, but they continue to need as much milk from their mother. They keep drinking milk for up to ten years! At first, baby elephants don't really know what to do with their trunks. They swing them to and fro and sometimes even step on them. 📸African Painted Dog 🦴Building on APDs being one of the most successful hunters in Africa and the way they bring down their prey (via group pursuit), painted dogs are not the best at guarding their newly-caught dinner. Because they are significantly smaller than many other predators, painted dogs need to chow down on their dinner as quickly as possible to avoid losing their meal to someone else. That means the buffet opens for first servings before their prey is, um, done with the process of becoming dinner. They just start eating ASAP. 🦴To help with this, APDs have teeth designed perfectly for ripping the meat off of bones and snapping through tendons and smaller bones in the process. 🦴Did you know? APDs are known for valuing their family. Not only do they greet one another every morning with little nose touches, but they also bring back food for both the young, the ill, and the elderly. This time last year we were in Walt Disney World with our lovely friend @adamhattan. One the highlights of the trip was Adam surprising us with the Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom. (Thank you, Adam! 😘) It was an amazing experience that included "backstage" hippo and crocodile viewing 🐊, walking across rope bridges and a private safari ride where we got VERY close to a protective daddy rhino called Doogan! 🦏 We also got to enjoy a delicious lunch served in "tiffin" cannisters along with some refreshing POG juice in a private pavilion against the stunning backdrop of the savannah. 📸Blue-Bellied Roller This one’s for @wild_feather_mb! I took this only a minute or so before the turaco 💩 on my lens 😂 🪺Blue-bellied rollers are a member of the roller family of birds found across Africa in a “narrow belt” from Senegal to the east Democratic Republic of Congo. Their breeding area is within that small band, but their populations do expand beyond that area outside of breeding season. They prefer to live in mature savannas in more moist environments (hence the presence in the DRC). 🪺The reason for their name “roller” is because their courtship behaviors include a lot of rolling, tumbling flights that impress anyone and everyone present. Their hunting typically involves much of the same dive-bombing tactics to snatch up the small invertebrates, small reptiles, and any fruits they might snack on. 🪺Did you know? Blue-bellied rollers will congregate near forest fires to make a buffet of the fleeing insects. Animal Kingdom 2/3 We were able to see both the Lion King show AND the Finding Nemo stage show from AWESOME seats today thanks to @melhoe1 🙇🏻♀️🙌🏼 Not only that, we were able to meet the cast of Finding Nemo backstage!!! 📸Western Lowland Gorilla: Ada Seeing gorillas walk on 2 legs is always so humorous to me. They’re definitely known to be one of the most quadruped of the great apes, so it’s just never what you expect to see while watching a gorilla. 🦍Do you see Ada’s little hands? They’re so much like yours. As primates, gorillas have hands that are nearly identical to ours- including opposable thumbs. They have hairless palms and fingernails just like we do as well as a very similar skeletal structure. The main differences lie in the third metacarpals (last bones in the palm) that have special adaptations including a ridge that prevents hyperextension of the lower joints while knuckle-walking. Gorillas also have interlocking bones in their forearms and wrists to help them bear their immense weight without damaging their joints, bones, or ligaments. 🦍Since gorillas have opposable thumbs, they also have the dexterity to use tools and to do things like learning sign language. Most famously, Koko the gorilla learned over 1000 different signs and could effectively communicate with her keepers and even with others who knew ASL. Koko played a huge role in transforming how the world at large viewed gorillas and helping others understand how incredibly smart and humanlike they really are. 📸African Painted Dogs This song is a great reference to the 2000’s live action Scooby Doo, which was a terrible franchise (the LA ones I mean) but this song will never not be stuck in my head. 🦴African painted dogs are a very social species of “wild dog” — more accurately a wild canine, as calling them a wild dog lends itself to strange ideas- who have never been domesticated. They are the largest indigenous canine in Africa and are found throughout a lot of (but not nearly as much as in previous decades) sub-Saharan Africa. 🦴By themselves, painted dogs would be pretty poor hunters with a very low success rate as they’re not truly that large and would be outweighed and overpowered by most prey and other predators on the savanna. But in a group of 10-15+ individuals they become one of the most successful hunters in Africa, easily beating out both cheetahs and lions. The APD’s hunting style is somewhat similar to lions in that they work cooperatively to catch their next meal, but I’ll elaborate on that another time. 🦴How closely related are painted dogs to other canines? 📸African Lion: Kamari Hearing and seeing Kamari roar is always one of the highlights of my day. 🦁A lion’s roar doesn’t sound like what you hear in the movies because most of Hollywood dub tiger roars in for lions because they believe tigers sound more threatening. 🦁A lion’s roar can be heard from up to 5 miles away, but there are some caveats here regarding noise pollution, the geography of the area, and also what “kind” of roar we’re talking about here. How loud are the lions trying to be? For the loudest roars that can travel those 5 miles, many sources report that they can reach 115 decibels (within a 1 meter radius), which is the same noise level as a chainsaw. 🦁Lions typically roar because they are warning other lions that this territory is theirs and not to trespass. These next two days I want to talk about doing things differently. It should be obvious to anyone who's so much as looked at my page, I go to Animal Kingdom a lot, like once or twice a week and I always have my camera with me. This makes it challenging to try and get different photos. These last few months I've been using the 300mm lens, but over the weekend I decided to switch things up and use my 35-150mm. This changes the type of photos I can get, with more of a focus on the environment around the animals instead of just the animals themselves. Having the 35-150 on also allows me to take photos of something else on the Safari, but more on that later. Thanks to their sloped backs and large heart and lung capacity, they are quite the speedy endurance runners with a top speed of around 40 miles per hour. 🛵Spotted hyenas are known to be one of, if not the most successful hunters in Africa. They are successful in killing up to 95% of their prey. They will often hunt in larger groups of 10-20 members of the clan in order to successfully bring down larger prey items like zebra or cape buffalo. 🛵Did you know? Spotted hyenas have been seen patrolling territories as large as 40 square miles.
