Last year Travel + Leisure ranked the Best U.S. Resorts for Families (ranked according to readers). There were a good amount of Disney resorts on the list, but let’s talk about the highest ranked at WDW. 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 🏨 🦒 • Animal Kingdom Lodge (AKL) was the highest ranked WDW resort on the list. The only other resort that made the list was Beach Club (BC). Funny enough AKL is my top choice for those who aren’t visiting the parks, and BC is my favorite WDW resort in general. But of the 20+ resorts at WDW, why AKL above all others. Well the predominant answer is described by the article as “a surreal sense of place”…… it’s the savanna of course! But more important than the savanna itself, in order to be ranked the 13th best family resort in the country, is how Disney utilized its savanna theming to create unique experiences. The diversity and nature (no pun intended) of these activities and experiences are what sets this resort above the rest. There are a variety of both animal and cultural activities that everyone in the family will likely enjoy. There are animal spotting activities (even ones that include night vision goggles), programs including helping prepare food for the animals, culinary tours, art tours, art and design classes like cookie decorating, etc. And most of these are guided and lead by an expert. This is a huge reason why I pick AKL as the best for a resort only stay. There’s so much to do and a lot of it is super educational in a fun environment. This is also why I love that the cultural representative program has returned to Disney World. Not even mentioned in the ranking description is how, in my opinion, AKL has the best overall dining lineup top to bottom - from pool bar to signature restaurant and everything in between. Obviously there’s room for debate there, but I think even the overall reviews of each and every dining option here are strong evidence of that. But yeah, Animal Kingdom Lodge…… if not for a stay, it’s a least worth a visit for sure.

Okay, one of my favorite table service restaurants in Disney World is at Sanaa located at Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the number one reason is this dish down below. The Bread Service at Sanaa is FANTASTIC. It comes with different types of naan and a variety of chutneys and sauces that are just 👌. They also have other African and Indian-inspired dishes like Butter Chicken! And, if you make your reservations early enough, ask for a table by the window! One of our favorite cast member interactions from this trip was with Blessed! We each took a turn trying to match the “Feces to the Species” and yours truly was the only one to get all 5 correct! (Must be all the diapers I’ve changed over the years!). He taught us about the different uses for elephant poop in his home country in Africa. We made it to Foodie Friday! This is the weekly post where I'm showcasing dining spots you should check out during your next Walt Disney World trip, places you should avoid, items that are especially amazing (or terrible), and dining locations I'd like your feedback on! This Foodie Friday is a full resort feature, where I'm recommending a spot to stay if you want lots of access to highly-rated dining options. Animal Kingdom Lodge is an all-around excellent resort choice. It's typically the least-expensive Deluxe resort (tied with Wilderness Lodge) and has plenty of cheap DVC rentals too. The theming is exquisite, and nothing beats having animals outside your room or the back porch of the resort. But even more impressive is the food. Especially from a table-service perspective, you can't beat the line-up at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Jiko, Sanaa, and Boma regularly rate in the top 10 restaurants at Walt Disney World. Even better, you can get quick service breakfast at Sanaa - one of the best options anywhere on property. Even the pool bars aren't slacking, with unique African beers (and other drinks), plus reliable food options. After every WDW trip, @theunofficialguides readers and @touringplans users can give each dining location they experience a thumbs up or thumbs down, and the options at Animal Kingdom Lodge get a lot of thumbs up. This week’s restaurant adventure was actually a birthday lunch for myself at Sanaa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. This one was new to me (I try to hit up something new each week), and if you don’t know, I’m a picky eater. But the bread service (5 breads, 9 dips) alone made me very happy. The salad and the samosas were good, but not superb. Overall? This is one of those “experience” meals - you go because of the ambiance and the views of the animals (which did NOT) disappoint. Zebras, giraffes, wildebeasts?, and some fancy cranes with crown feathers - I was so thrilled to see them all. If you go, I recommend doing daylight hours, and don’t forget to go out on the deck to get even closer views of the animals! #disneyanimalkingdomlodge #sanaadisney #animalkingdomlodge #localtourist
