📸Ring-tailed Lemur 🖤Lemurs are one of the most scientifically fascinating primates. Endemic (meaning they are only found there) to the island of Madagascar, there are currently around 100 existing species and more are being discovered very frequently. 🤍Ring-tailed lemurs are more terrestrial than most of their relatives, which means they will spend a significant amount of their time foraging on the forest floor. 🖤Lemurs as a whole are considered to be one of if not the most heavily threatened mammal on planet earth. Since they are only found in Madagascar, their home territory is very limited and therefore every bit of land they lose is detrimental. Some of their biggest threats are human expansion for agricultural purposes, hunting lemurs for food, and illegal trapping for the local pet trade. You can help protect their natural habitats in Madagascar by recycling your paper products and purchasing rainforest-safe products- specifically coffee, chocolate, and anything else commercially advertised as coming from Madagascar. 🤍Ecologically, lemurs are fantastic seed-dispersers since they eat primarily fruit and the undigested seeds will pass through their system and help forest recovery efforts. Did you know that at Animal Kingdom they don’t sell balloons nor do they allow you to bring one in the park?! Why?!? Because if escapes from your hands, it can become a danger to wildlife who may consume it. So to keep the animals safe they don’t allow them. DID YOU KNOW: If you have already bought a balloon at the other parks or Disney Springs and then go to AK they have a Balloon Daycare! That’s right, they kindly keep your balloon safe with the cast members and you can pick it up after your time at AK! 📸Spotted Hyena: Scooter 🤎 Last Tuesday during a very long animal stop, a guest asked me if the painted dogs were hyenas. I said no, then went on to explain their differences and talk about hyenas a bit more. As I talked about spotted hyenas, I said that they are one of my favorite animals and he went “mine too!”. Even with Scooter no longer around, I’m still finding ways to talk about hyenas at every turn. 🐈⬛ or 🐕? Hyenas are not canines or felines— they're actually a part of their own family known as Hyaenidae. It's the fifth smallest carnivore family and only consists of 4 species: the spotted hyena, striped hyena, brown hyena, and aardwolves. They are considered to be "feliform", though, which does mean they resemble cats more than dogs. 🧠Did you know? Great Horned Owl 🦉 Feathered Friends in Flight delivers on the show's name. You will see almost all the birds in this show fly. Some will even fly over the audience. The owls fly the width of the theater. They fly low and silently. According to howstuffworks.com The design of owls' wings allows them to fly in almost absolute silence. Different parts of their wings and the characteristics of their feathers contribute to their silent flight. Owls have broad wings with large surface areas that help them to float through the air without flapping too much. Less flapping makes less noise. The main reason owls can fly silently is the uniquely designed leading edges of their primary feathers. When most birds fly, turbulence — created when air gushes over the surface of their wings — causes noise. Owls' wings, however, are unique because they reduce noise caused by turbulence. An owl's primary feathers are serrated like a comb. This design breaks down turbulence into smaller currents called micro-turbulences. Then, the edge of the feather muffles the sound of air flowing over the wing and shifts the angle at which air flows. These soft feathers allow air to pass through which eliminates sound. Here's a tiny selection of some of the MANY details that I saw for the very first time on my most recent visit to my favorite land at Animal Kingdom a few days ago. I've been visiting Dinoland for over 26 years, and I discover something new every time I'm here. The deep world building of the Dino Institute and Restaurantosaurus is incredible. The lore of Diggs County is very similar to paleontology and fossils in the sense that it is meant to be discovered by us as we explore the land and uncover new layers to the story of Chester and Hester and the Dino Institute.
