Still not running well , the ideal continues to rise up out of control at a given RPM , I had thought it could be an air leak, but it could be a ignition issue, so I removed the distributor and had a good look at the unit . It wasn’t the best inside the rotor arm was eating its way in to the cap and it could advise way to far could some of these be the problem 🤔 so ordered new points and rotor etc from alfaholics, and welded up the quadrant to only allow the correct max advance 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾fingers crossed . When i tried to carve this sign, i noticed the letters were getting thicker during the cut. The z axis slowly descended for unknown reasons. I did some dry runs and found it lost some 5mm height over the course of the letter shapes, so something's off with the drive when it has to do lots of quick rise and fall movements. I put some markings on the axis, belt and gears but these were solid, no slippage or jumping teeth there. So it must be something to do with the stepper motor itself. I reduced the acceleration in grbl which helped a lot - most likely it slipped some steps either during acceleration or near max speed when torque decreased since the new spindle and rails added to the moving weight significantly. Since the motors still ran cold, i also increased their current from 3.2 to 3.8 amps (datasheet nominal is 3.6, but they still stay cool). I wanted to change the gear ratio as well because the Z axis has a whopping 4800 steps/mm (20:60 belt times 4mm per turn of the lead screw) but i don't have the right belt lengths for the new gears at hand. I'm going to redesign the motor mount to get a wider range of distance adjustment options there but I'm currently lacking the aluminium stock to build it.
