Last March, for the closing of Women’s History Month I had the esteem honor of providing tunes/being apart of My Sister’s Keeper Unconfrence (MSK) event along with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson. MSK is a NYC Department of Education Initiative promoting gender equality for girls & young Women of color, & and gender expansive for any other students who identify as Woman. One of The many initiative’s main goals are building communities of safe spaces in middle - high schools where girls feel valued, seen, & the strengthing of sisterhood from all backgrounds & walks of life. It was a full house of over 1,000+ students from schools all across the Bronx. This event was truly a celebration of empowerment. Truly was an honor to be a part of this past event & even amazed to witness again the amazing Choir from Harlem Songs Of Solomon. “Do you pick your feet in Poughkeepsie?” Heavy hearted after hearing the news of DJ Paul Nice. When I 1st started diggin’ I vividly remember my 1st ever collection of battle breaks record I ever bought was his 5 Fingers Of Death breaks along side Skratchy Seal records & many others at a local record shop. It was the 1st time hearing about him but after doing research- I was blown away! His mixes, remixes, & his work ignited in me a whole new fire for records. Especially 2nd slide pic of his set up😮💨🤌🏼✨ “Fists of the White Lotus” became a fav of mine & many other tracks opened my mind to his style of production & his blends were always on point. It was an honor to finally met him years ago after he saw one of my freestyle scratch videos of myself cuttin’ to his Lotus beat. He was a cool guy. He signed my 5 FOD record, & just talking to him about music & DJ battles was unforgettable. His passion for classic kung foo movies too was really dope to see the type of collector & fan he was. He was a unique & unforgettable soul with an amazing talent & passion for music. A couple months ago, I had the honor in DJing for Family Day: 50 Years Of Hip Hop & a NeON Arts private event for Carnegie Hall! Both events were a success! 🎉 Happy birthday to the talented @iammarkronson 🎉 Had not been for this guy and of course, a couple other DJ heroes of mine, I don’t think I would be the DJ that I am today. I remember waaay back when as a young Perlz I discovered his music from a Lily Allen album and found out he had an online radio show in Nyc. I would listen every Friday night to Mark's show Authentic Sh!t religiously on @eastvillageradio (about 15+ years ago) with Aaron LaCrate as co host. Those nights were like my classroom - mind you, I had nobody to teach me how to dj, I did it all on my own and listening to Mark was my teacher.I listened, studied, and imagined how it was done just by listening to the show: how a DJ mixed, blend and l tried to remember/figure out on my own the scratches/ techniques that they did in their sets, and tried to practice those rhythms from memory the next day. I was introduced to a world of new music from artists & DJs (Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Daniel Merriweather) and many more. I was too young to go to YOYO and Webster Hall Nyc parties to see Mark and Aaron live with a sick lineup of djs but I kept listening to EVR and kept practicing. Listening and seeing Mark kill it then and throughout the years was, and still has been, the spark of inspiration I needed as a kid to keep practicing and keep listening to dope music. His album “Version” and Lady Gaga “The Fame” (and many others to name) were amongst the 1st albums I bought when I started going diggin’. A couple weeks ago I had the honor of being apart of an amazing event held at one of NYC’s most legendary & prestigious venues, Carnegie Hall! Just won My 2nd U.S. title & it is so surreal🥹Took a moment to soak it all in- Tears of joy & gratitude🙌🏼🙏🏼❤️ can’t believe I’m the 1st Woman with 2 U.S titles- I’m overwhelmed with so many emotions. To AM⚡️ A mini tribute to AM, his ‘Wonderwall’ routine❤️ I’m not doing this for ‘clout’ or attention or anything of that nature - just sharing my utmost gratitude, thanks, and love to AM and his influence on us all❤️🙏🏼 And honestly, it was this routine of his (of course many many influential others as well) that got me excited about music, made me rethink creativity & I fell in love with DJ’ing over & over again. He's not only my hero but OUR Dj hero. He inspired not only myself but everyone worldwide to do what we love - music. Believe when I say I tried to get a fake ID in high school to see him live but no luck with my baby face.
