🥾 Day 33 * Los Arcos ➡️ Viana * about 18 km * Started at 7 am and arrived at 12h15 (Forgot to turn on the app this morning, so dont have reliable data today🙃) 🗣️ Quote of the day Jens: "We zijn de lente in gelopen" 💪 How did it go? Leaving Los Arcos at 7am felt good, we saw the beautiful morning colours and enjoyed the (real!) fresh morning air, knowing the heat was coming. We went quite fast, and we were both surprised we were feeling better today. The care of Annet her feet has really helped and she could walk without pain. As for Jens, his splint shin seems to be getting better as well, or at least not worse! Arriving at 12h15 in Viana, we were doubting whether we should not continue to Logroño. But we learned an important lesson on the camino: you can always keep going, but, 1st of all - it is not a race, and 2nd - we can actually enjoy the ease of the day as well. It felt great to have a day without rain, mud, pain or other hard or difficult events.The elder pilgrims on the camino showed us again how important it is to make time and take time for life, for others, for the things that are happening in the here and now. A great reminder. And somehow our physical pains allow us to slow down mentally as well. And so when we arrived at the albergue, we went straight out on the streets of this beautiful lively town again, for a drink and some patatas bravas. We met a kind woman from Brasil, with whom we shared a drink and a chat, and saw a lot of fellow pilgrims that we now know pass by. We took it easy, showered, Annet did her new feet care ritual, and we still had plenty of time to enjoy the sun and the summer vibe. It doesn't get much better than this 🌞 🙏 Friendly people along the way Grateful to meet Vanda (not sure if thats how you write it..) who was so kind to invite us at her table at a local bar. We had a very interesting conversation about her home country Brasil, and her life here. Day 32 * Estella-Lizarra ➡️ Los Arcos * 21 km * 400m uphill and 370m downhill * 4h13 walking time 🗣️ Quote of the day Annet, langzaam trekkend aan haar blarenpleister: "mijn huid ligt eraf.. en er komt pus uit!" [Een inkijkje in het leven van een wandelaar met blaren. But little did we know; geel vocht uit een blaar is blijkbaar normaal..] 💪 How did it go? We slept great. Earplugs and eyemasks are the best. We got up at 6.30, drank our tea and left at 7.30. It was a beautiful sunny day. We walked with views on green hills crowned with fortresses and small villages with medieval churches. We walked in shorts and sunglasses, had small brakes here and there, a cup of coffee in a bar, breakfast in a meadow and strawberries in the shade. We met a pilgrim who is now a blacksmith apprentice. We even found a wine fountain! This was around 9.30, so we limited our intake of red wine to an amount appropriate for early mornings. We met friendly people on the way and arrived early in Los Arcos where we got offered a private room in La Casa de la Abuela, with very nice down blankets, without extra costs. We feel like a king and queen. Annet however suffered from some mean blisters and visited a doctor which desinfected, punctured and wrapped her toes and feet in bandages. Her feet now sort of look like they are being mummified. Jens his shin was doing better today, it seems to help to not carry the backpack and not walk too far. Also, we found a super small grocery store with, wait for it, vegan tiramisu! Heavenly evening with watching Poldark and eating desert in bed. Tomorrow will be a warm day (28°C) so we will leave early. Good night everyone! 🙏 Friendly people along the way Grateful for the energy of the group of high school students walking a week on the camino - we passed each other several times today and are now staying in the same hostel. 🥾 Day 31 * Puente la Reina ➡️ Estella-Lizarra * 22 km * 430m uphill and 370m downhill * 4h45 walking time 🗣️ Quote van de dag "Je loopt de camino door te stappen, anders kom je niet vooruit 🎶" (Met dank aan Floor, Fien en Henk voor dit catchy en behulpzame deuntje voor onderweg 🤗) 💪 How did it go? We took off before 8 this morning and enjoyed the morning freshness. We met new people on the way, amongst who Charles, and it was great to have a chat walking together for a bit. We advanced well and didn't have problems, until after a lunch break at about 15kms. This seems to be a turning point where for the both of us the pains become more painful. We took it easy afterwards but still managed to arrive early in Estella at 14h, in a very quiet albergue. This was great as it allowed us to choose our beds, and our own little corner. We took a shower and went out to see the little city of Estella, which has beautiful old buildings. We were very happy with the many (about 10!) pharmacies they have here, to find Jens a pair of .... compression stockings! And people are so friendly here, helping us find a store where they had them, though looking a bit confused 🫢 We met kind new French, Spanish and Argentinian people in the hostel, and slowly getting to know the group that now surrounds us on the road. It was very nice talking to a man who has done all the different routes of the camino, and is now walking from one albergue to the next, helping out as a volunteer. The camino is very special in the sense that there are people from all over the world coming together, offering a chance to share and exchange if you want. 🙏 Friendly people along the way Very grateful to the unknown people who move our belongings along the camino with us, so that we may walk lighter and can keep going! We are gathering nice pink ribbons on Jens' bag, and Annet is now happily using the service through Jens, stuffing his bag with her things too, as this alleviates the pressure on the feet 🙃 #elcamino #donejakuebidea #estella
🥾 Day 30 * Pamplona ➡️ Puente la Reina * 26,3 km * 490m uphill and 580m downhill * 5h38 walking time 🗣️ Quote of the day Annet: "Met doorzettingsvermogen raak je ver van huis" (Hier verbazen we ons sinds we in Spanje zijn steeds weer over) 💪 How did it go? We had a good rest in Pamplona, but to say we have fully recovered wouldn't be true.. Jens is afraid of a real injury and so he decided to have his backpack sent to the next stop (this was mentally not easy to choose for him), and walk as light as possible. It was a good decision, because now he arrived with pain, but not too much. Annet on the other hand thought her blisters on her heel were looking better, but was walking badly the last 5km. Lets see how that goes tomorrow. We will send Jens his backpack ahead again, with as much of the weight from Annets backpack too, in the hope that we will both arrive in good condition to our next desired stop tomorrow, 22km from here. Step by step we will get there 🥾🥾 Otherwise we had a good day, it was warm (22°C!) and sunny and so we had our first day of hiking in shorts 🌞 We also had nice views on Pamplona and the valley surrounding the city, and then towards the valley and destination ahead of us. Last but not least we passed el Alto del Pardon today - a place where you find a monument dedicated to the pilgrims on the camino de Santiago. There was also a monument dedicated to the victims of Francos regime which impressed us and which we did not know anything about before (do look it up of you're interested). We are now staying in a dorm room in a hostel again, never a dull day meeting all the different people who are on the camino! The hostel itself is being run by a very nice man, and it has a lovely garden with trees that are blossoming (and this might just make up a bit for a little bit less clean sanitary conditions 🫢). 🥾 Day 27 * Zubiri ➡️ Pamplona * 20,8 km * 260m uphill and 340m downhill * 4h10 walking time 💪 How did it go? We had another day of sunshine and high temperatures, and feel like the days of rain and mud are far behind us. What a relief! At the same time, new challenges will always present itself. We are feeling pretty tired after a few weeks of walking without a proper rest. And so we will stay an extra day here in Pamplona tomorrow, which we are very much looking forward to. Time to rest and recover 🙏 At the end of the day we went out onto the street to have a drink with some of the people we met, which was so nice! The streets were full with people enjoying life, spending time with family and friends. And so did we, sharing stories and laughing. It was a very uplifting atmosphere. And Pamplona seems to be a beautiful old city, we're feeling lucky were getting to explore it further tomorrow. 🙏 Friendly people along the way It's such a nice thing to be able to pass time with kind and like minded people. 🥾 Day 26 * Roncesvalles ➡️ Zubiri * 22,1 km * 320m uphill and 750m downhill * 4h58 walking time 💪 How did it go? Leaving Roncesvalles this morning we were looking forward to a day going downhill instead of up. The walk was mostly over forest paths with beautiful views, which we very much enjoyed. We had good company, the sun on our faces, and were able to take it slow as it was not very far or difficult today. Unfortunately for Jens he was in a lot of pain towards the end of the hike, and it was there that we had to descend a lot towards the village of Zubiri. When you're not in pain a very nice path down! But we made it to the albergue municipal, and are in the dormitory with a lot of the people we met before already. A big group of people from Korea are here as well, and as we learned they get up early (5!).. and so, after a few nights of less sleep (for Annet at least) we'll make sure to go to bed really early, to get enough hours of sleep 🙈 because when one is awake, all are awake... 🙏 Friendly people along the way We had a coffee in a small cafe where we met a Colombian man who had had to flee the country and told us his life story. El 1 de abril de 2023, para empezar el mes bien arriba, quise retomar el Camino del Norte y realizar la novena etapa. En esta ocasión, si todo iba bien, cambiaría de región y entraría por fin en Cantabria. La previsión meteorológica para ese día no era muy buena y, de hecho, el cielo estaba bastante tapado por unos nubarrones grises, pero, decidida a lograr el hito y sin pensarlo mucho, salí de casa a eso de las 12:15h y puse rumbo a la playa de La Arena (Zierbena-Muskiz), el punto donde el 5 de noviembre del 2022 había finalizado la etapa anterior. Primero tomé el metro a Portugalete, donde posteriormente tenía que coger un autobús hasta la playa. Cuál fue mi "sorpresa" cuando, al salir del metro en Portugalete y ver que ya -antes de comenzar a caminar- estaba lloviendo, me percaté de que me había olvidado el paraguas y también la capa de lluvia. Fail. Pero como decía, ese día yo no estaba dispuesta a que nada se interpusiera en mi Camino, nunca mejor dicho, así que seguí con el itinerario y a las 13:35h mis pies ya pisaban la arena de la playa y comencé, ahora sí oficialmente, la novena etapa. El tramo inicial lo conocía. Consistía en atravesar la playa, cruzar el puente de Pobeña y, del otro lado del río Barbadun, recorrer la vía Itsaslur por la costa. La lluvia iba y venía, pero no era molesta, y, aunque algunos desprendimientos de tierra invadían el camino en algunos tramos, en general llegué sin demasiados inconvenientes hasta el parking de Kobaron (donde, por cierto, aproveché para firmar un geocache). Continué por Itsaslur con un clima cada vez más desapacible, y fue justo a la altura de la frontera entre ambas provincias cuando empezó a caer un chaparrón del que apenas pude cobijarme, y que me caló por completo las zapatillas y los pantalones. ¡Planazo! Mas en cuanto la lluvia dio una pequeña tregua metí el turbo, y, sin muchos miramientos, alcancé el municipio cántabro de Ontón. Allí me surgió un dilema. Molidos pero enteros, esta fase de acondicionamiento muscular, nos va a poner como mulas 💪 Pocos peregrinos y todos foráneos, hoy de momento no ha llegado ninguno hasta este enclave especial, quizá la última cuesta sostenida les haya disuadido. MENDIZORROTZ (416m) Entre Orio e Igeldo se extiende un cordal con base de roca arenisca, cuya cúspide es el centenario Mendizorrotz. La cima catalogada, como tal, no es muy atractiva, ya que se encuentra copada por antenas y un manto de "otakas", bajo las cuales se esconden los restos de un fuerte de la Guerra Civil. Pero encontraremos otros atractivos en la ruta para pasar una agradable jornada. El área recreativa de Lusarbe es el perfecto inicio para nuestro recorrido que, enseguida nos lleva a visitar los 4 túmulos de las edades del Cobre y del Bronce de Tontortxiki; por un sendero bañado de erizos en el que hacemos buen acopio de castañas. De vuelta a la carretera, abriéndonos paso por el cerrado sendero, avanzamos hacia nuestro objetivo siguiendo el asfalto; dejando a un lado la cruz de Aitzasate. Al encontrar la pista que sube a las antenas de Mendizorrotz, coronamos nuestro objetivo, que lo mejor que tiene son las vistas a Donosti, Getaria y los principales cordales gipuzkoarras. Para el regreso iremos en busca del Camino del Norte, la idea era usar el sendero de Buztinzuri para ello, pero lo encontramos cerrado por la maleza. Así que retrocediendo unos metros, vamos en busca del camino que desciende directamente hacia la loma de Arrizorrotz (250 m). Visitada la cima situada tras una charca, volvemos al camino jacobeo que nos llevará entre peregrinos de vuelta a Lusarbe y con ayuda del PR-GI 159, ascendemos directos a Kukuarri (377 m). Esta cima sí que resulta de interés con sus inmejorables vistas, una inmensa cruz blanca y la escultura de la Andra Mari de Kukuarri, obra de Oteiza. Volviendo sobre nuestros pasos y siguiendo la carretera, retornamos a nuestro punto de partida; no sin antes llevarnos una agradable sorpresa al encontrarnos con una curiosa raza de vacuno.
