I loved the look of this tree. The green and gold moss growing on it. And the ubiquitous yellow arrow marking “the way”. Yellow arrows are used throughout Spain to mark the way of St. James or the Camino de Santiago. I sometimes say out loud “thank you for the arrow” just to the universe because anytime I doubt if I’m going the right way within a few meters another yellow arrow will pop up. Día 5: Pontevedra a Caldas de Reis Hoy marcamos un hito personal: 24 kilómetros de pura belleza y desafío, desde Pontevedra hasta Caldas de Reis. Pontevedra, conocida como “La Boa Vila”, nos recibió con su historia que se remonta a la época romana. Esta ciudad, con el segundo centro histórico más importante de Galicia después de Santiago de Compostela, es un tesoro de arte e historia. A medida que avanzábamos por el sendero, compartimos sonrisas y palabras con otros peregrinos que también buscan respuestas, reflexiones y experiencias en este camino ancestral. Nos rodeaban almas valientes, cada una con su propia historia y motivación. Algunos caminaban por fe, otros por desafío personal, pero todos compartíamos un propósito común: llegar a Santiago de Compostela. Caminando hacia Caldas de Reis, nos sumergimos en la naturaleza y la historia. | 16/04/2024 Étape 24, J2 : Auvillar ➡️ Lectoure 👣 37,85 km - ⏳10h de marche. 📍540,10 km cumulés depuis le Puy-en-Velay en 2022. Total 168 h Chez Retno nous avons fait la connaissance de Mechthild une Allemande partie de Nuremberg. Une très belle rencontre aussi. Nous l'avons aidée à trouver un gîte sur La Romieu, notre étape du lendemain. Elle avait eu beaucoup de mal à trouver où dormir car tout était complet partout. Cette étape a été très marquante de par la personnalité de Retno, une pèlerine Indonésienne au parcours de vie aussi bouleversant qu'incroyable. Malgré la fatigue de la marche et d'avoir parlé allemand toute la soirée, j'ai tout de même trouvé la force d'écouter Retno me parler de sa vie jusque très tard dans la soirée alors que mes voisines de lit étaient déjà montées se coucher depuis bien longtemps. J'ai rejoins à mon tour ma chambre où ça ronflait sec, toute tourneboulée mais en même temps avec du mal à m'endormir. Le lendemain, nous avons eu un petit déjeuner incroyable comme jamais pèlerin n'a eu. C'est la marque de fabrique de Retno semble t-il 😊. Vandredag 10. Navarette - Azofra, 23 km Solo hiking idag, med små hyggelige møder med nogle af dem jeg har mødt on and off. Skøn dag! Lange passager med vidder og det er jeg ret vild med 🤗 Noget af det langs noget motorvej, men for mig blev bilernes susen forbi bare en del af lydbilledet og høre det ikke rigtig fordi jeg går ind i en form for meditativ tilstand 🙂 Der var 17 km fra Navarette til næste by…så det er vigtigt på de stræk at have snack/mad og vand. Vand kan nogle gange fyldes op ved vandposter men ikke idag. Lænden driller fra 20+ km men blir heldigvis også bedre, dog vil jeg købe en lille dagrygsæk imorgen (til vand og snack og sådan), og så sende min store rygsæk afsted til næste sted jeg skal sove så min lænd kan få lidt ro. Fedt at man kan det! Og imorgen blir en kort dag på kun 15 km. | 15/04/2024 Étape 23, J1 : Moissac ➡️ Auvillar 21 km - 502,25 km cumulés depuis le Puy-en-Velay en 2022. Ma rencontre avec Nicole s'est avérée très intense sur presque tous les plans. Auvergnate pur jus (je ne me lancerai sur aucune polémique), c'est une belle personnalité brute de décoffrage et cabossée par la vie comme beaucoup de marcheurs qui entreprennent le chemin de Compostelle. Une femme très touchante. Et il se trouve que nous avons plusieurs gîtes en commun. C'est ainsi que nous cheminons ensemble quelques jours et que je l'écoute parler. Elle avait besoin de parler. Le Chemin parfois c'est une thérapie à ciel ouvert. Une amie rencontrée sur mon dernier tronçon, m'avait justement dit que souvent, il s'opère cet échange bienveillant entre pèlerin, tantôt c'est nous qui avons besoin de parler, tantôt c'est nous qui écoutons et la marche permet cette présence à soi, à l'autre. La météo du jour est mitigée, la marche pas trop difficile encore sur cette étape et nous arrivons chez Frédéric au Par'Chemin, un gîte qui m'avait été conseillé par un contact IG. Les réseaux ont du bon parfois. En chemin, Nicole n'avait pas de logement pour le lendemain. Comme j'avais réservé sur Lectoure déjà, je lui conseille donc d'appeler Retno. La joie d'une marche solo était de courte durée, non pas que je n'aime pas marcher avec quelqu'un, mais je n'avais pas prévu de rencontrer et faire le chemin avec quelqu'un aussi tôt. À peine engagée sur le GR à la sortie de Moissac qu'une Nicole m'alpague gentiment et me demande si j'étais d'accord pour marcher avec elle. Ma foi, voyons où cela nous mène et surtout si nous parvenons à marcher au même rythme car s'il y a bien une chose que j'ai intégrée lors de mes précédentes marches, c'est qu'il est très important de s'écouter et de marcher à son rythme. | En attendant le dîner Je me pose dans le jardin du Carmel pour noircir quelques lignes, m'organiser pour les stories, histoire de partager mes aventures avec ceux qui avaient envie de me suivre. Je me suis tellement sentie portée par les pensées de mes proches que ça valait bien le coup de prendre un peu de temps pour relater quelques rétrospectives pour la postérité, haha. Alors pour ceux qui ont loupé les stories, voici le re-making of de mes aventures 😅 J'ai retrouvé avec joie l'ambiance pèlerin au dîner et les contacts se font très fluides. Certains reprennent comme moi à Moissac, d'autres marchent depuis Conques déjà. Nous avons tous beaucoup rigolé en évoquant nos différents chemins, nos anecdotes. C'était comme retrouver des repères. | Toutes les sensations, les émotions me reviennent en mémoire. Je monte déposer mes affaires dans la chambre qui m'est affectée avant de ressortir me balader et je me rends compte qu'elle est déjà occupée. Un rapide coup d'œil et j'en déduis que ce sont celles d'un homme car elles ne semblent pas très féminines. Légèrement intriguée par la possible erreur d'affectation, je n'en fais pas plus cas que cela car il m'est déjà arrivé de partager des chambres en formule dortoir avec des hommes, sauf que là, ce sont des chambres de deux donc ça fait quand même bizarre. Blue skies. Red wine. Red back spider and losing my way on The Way “Blue skies, smiling at me. Nothing but blue skies from now on....” We prefer the optimistic Willie Nelson to the pessimistic Professor Higgins and his “rain in Spain.” A chilly morning though. 2 degrees when we left, but after a brisk walk and a hot coffee, we soon warmed up. After a few kms, we found the fountain of youth. Our wayward son had walked the Camino a few years earlier and regaled us with stories of free red wine flowing from taps on the trail. We had always put it down to wishful thinking on his part until we came across a very elaborate fountain of youth spewing out red wine. I quickly emptied my water bottle intending to top up, however after a couple of swigs, I thought I would be the fountain spewing out red wine. Those other trekkers with lesser fussy palates were soon queuing up for their fill, patiently waiting for Wendy.... Ok. I’ve covered the blue skies and red wine. But a red back spider in Spain? A large steelwork shop was nearby selling all things metal Camino pendants. Door handles. Horse shoes, hooks etc. On one dusty shelf we came across a steel/wire spider. No price tag. The artist said he had made it just for fun not expecting to sell it. However upon learning we were from Australia where we advised him these arachnids were simply everywhere, he was pleased to offer it to us at a bargain price. The remainder of the walk was simply stunning. In the distance, rows of small villages flanked by an exposed stone escarpment reminiscent of the Blue Mountains. Just 20km brought us to the small town of Los Arcos. It has been just one week since completing the Nantes marathon so I am due for a recovery run. I found a simple 12km loop on the Strava app but on closer examination, I saw a faint dotted line I could follow to reduce the run to around 8km. Off I went on my merry way. The wide gravel path soon shrank to a narrow trail covered mostly in rocks and weeds. A goat track the goats avoided. Stunning views however. I soon realised the town wasn’t where it was supposed to be so clambered up a steep hill to get my bearings. Had well and truly lost my way on “The Way.”

Vandredag 9. Viana - Navarrette Blev til 24,8 km i sol sol og mere sol 🥵☀️🤗 Dejlig dag igen idag - dog meget asfalt - og langt til og fra den storby jeg sku igennem idag, Logroño og en slags parkområde hvor mange af de lokale er. Men også flotte passager af natur og vinmarker 🤗 Gik de første par timer solo, efter 10 km kom jeg til Logroño spiste morgenmad, og mødte så Raye som også sku spise morgenmad, så jeg tog en kop kaffe mere 🙂 Og ja vi slentrede lidt rundt og ud af byen (en stor by) i 1,5 time. Vi fulgtes ad det meste af dagen og snakkede lidt om livet, og vi mødte Steffan fra Horsens som jeg mødte for nogle dage siden - hyggeligt! Efter dagens hike blev det til en dejlig kold øl i godt selskab med Steffan, Raye og Lindsey som er ny for mig. Fedt Albergue, og en skøn dag! 🥰 Idag har jeg også forladt Navarra regionen og gået ind i La Rioja regionen. The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.....and us! Damn you and your forecast Professor Higgins. We hoped the snow would stop. It did. Instead it bucketed down raining. What the heck! How about lightning and hailstones while you’re at it Professor! Okay. Enough! Our walk today? Rolling hills. Ancient stone walls adorning the well worn path. Stone bridges with arches. Churches with bells. Spring colours. Red, yellow, white and blue flowers. Green crops. Rainbows. Ploughed brown fields. Black tar roads.....Hang on? Tar roads.....You probably thought the ancient trail of the Way of St James would be 800km of cobblestones worn smooth by pilgrims leather sandals and colourful Hoka trail shoes. Noooo indeed. Instead it is a real mixture. The surface ranges from concrete footpaths, asphalt roads, rocky trails, sand, cobblestones and today, puddles of water intersected by mud and bogs of quicksand. The width varies from 4-5 metres wide to a single trail which disrupts those on mountain bikes trying to squeeze past. Unless the bikers ring their bells, call out, or send me an email, they can wait until I find an appropriate place for me to let them past. (I pretend not to notice them for at least 20 metres at which point I give them a startled look.) At each village, we search for a well deserved coffee. Many times we are disappointed. It is actually easier to buy a beer or wine than a cafe con leche. (Latte??) And after lunch or morning tea, the people of Spain seem to disappear. Gone. All doors and shops shut. Feels like a Covid shutdown. Siesta seems to be a real thing. Except for us lowly Peregrinos who must push on. Arriving too late into a village without a booking is always a worry. Many Albergues (pilgrim hostels) fill quickly adding to Spains homeless. So far, we haven’t been troubled. Technology abounds on the trail. E-sims. Camino apps. WhatsApp. Google maps. Google translate. Many challenges experienced by earlier pilgrims have now all but disappeared. We promise ourselves to forgo this technology and try out our luck the old way. I will retain my magic finger though which just ordered me a very large Cerveza for a miserly 3.5 euros.

第二十一日目→レドンデラ、33.2km。サンティアゴデコンポステラに到着して巡礼到達証明書をもらうには、徒歩で100kmをあるく必要があります。それゆえ100km地点の街から歩き始める人が多く、「フランス人の道」ではサリア、そして私が歩く「ポルトガルの道」では昨日宿泊したトュイがそれにあたります。さらに今日滞在する街は、ポルトで分かれた海岸ルートとの合流地点。アルベルゲも満室、歩いていても前後に人がいることが多くなりました。でも大丈夫、今日から前回のカミーノで知り合ったオランダ人女子が私と合流し、この先の宿泊予約も全部してくれています！このインスタを見て途中参加を決めた彼女のセリフ、「仕事だけするには人生は短い」、カッコいいでしょ‼︎ そして残り85kmを切りました。 The 21st day to Redondela. Bulls and Bumble Bees One challenge in a foreign country is communicating with the locals. (Actually, I have this problem in Australia as well). In this case, speaking Spanish. I studied it briefly and can confidently order essentials. “Un Cerveza por favour Amigo.” Works every time. And I practice every day. So how does this now work out in downtown Spain? Think of the communication between Basil Fawlty and Manuel. Apart from my practiced, singular, linguistic skill, I get by. However I have a magic finger. When confronted with a wide array of sweets, beers, tapas and other gastronomic delights at the bar, I simply wave my magic finger and life is good. Trouble is, the finger gets out of hand. For lunch yesterday, cheese cake, carrot cake, some kind of sandwich with eel, a coffee and finally, a leg of duck with makes a lamb shank look utterly miserable. Later that night at a packed bar, the finger pointed at the big glass for a beer. The finger chose two scallop shells crammed with some kind of seafood chowder. Then the other fingers joined in and it got messy. Our early night, early rise plan disintegrated. I ran with the bulls. Wendy gave me her finger. So the next day, though short in distance, it was surprisingly long. No rain. No snow. And when the sun came out, it was actually quite warm. Until you take off your jacket and jumper and the temperature drops once more. The trail today was very significant. Apart from several villages adorned with obligatory churches and their soaring bell towers, the path was lined with brilliant red poppies. Anzac Day. Actually, not sure of the exact dates with Australian time zones etc. Not even sure what day of the week it is. Seriously. Our lives currently on a village to village schedule. Today. Tomorrow and yesterday. That’s it. Currently resting in the Aloa Bar in downtown Puente la Reina where the barmaid proudly assures us the vino is locally produced.
Vandredag 8. Los Arcos - Viana / 20,1 km Min første plan var at dele den officielle etape som idag er 28 km op i 2 dele - og gå 8 km fra morgenstunden og så stoppe og gå 20 km imorgen. Skal passe med byer man kan sove i. Men det var alt for tideligt at stoppe efter kun ca 1,5 time og havde det fint - var også et kedeligt sted! Så gik videre, og det jeg glad for 🤗 Smuk tur - godt vejr bortset fra et par kæmpe byger. Den første efter et par timer - den næste som jeg kom til Viana og skulle finde mit Albergue, et municipal dvs man kan ikke booke og får en seng efter først til mølle. Gik kl.7 -12.30 idag med en halvdårlig mulighed for morgenmad. Første by efter 7,5 km var en spøjs lille butik hvor det kunne blive til en form for kage, banan og en kop kaffe. Næste by efter ca 0,5 km et flute med omelet, bacon og ost som blev spist på vejen 😄 Har gode snack med altid, så klarede mig fint de næste 13 km uden byer. Kom idag forbi et sted hvor man lægger en sten, et flag måske et billede med hilsen til ens døde der er savnet. Havde læst om det - og meget fint sted. Blev helt rørt og lagde en sten til min far ❤️ Igen en tur med op og ned - og ja bare flot. Det er fedt bare at være i natur. Idag dog også flere korte steder med vandring på vej. Det er ok. Bedre i min ømme hofte og lænd især i højre side, er en gammel skade men driller nu først efter ca 18 km, og går så væk igen efter lidt tid. Det skal nok gå 🙂 Det siges, at kroppen får det bedre i uge 2 og 3, og det tror jeg på 😄 Kan mærke jeg bliver stærkere 🤗 Fulgtes kort tid med en ung kvinde Ray, fra USA idag - og solohiking også. 第二十日目→トゥイ、25km。どすん、そしてうめき声…。今朝、5時半。2段ベッドの上に寝ていたスペイン人女性が梯子から落ちてしまいました。背中と頭を石の床に強打してそのまま身動きできず。たまたま同室だったお医者さんや看護師さんが診てくれましたが、とても痛そう。心配しつつも、周りは出発の準備。取り残される不安な気持ちを思うと可哀想ですが仕方ない。幸いにもパートナーが一緒にいますし、どうやらタクシーを呼ぶみたいです。小雨の中、20km近くを歩いて国境へ到着。その名も国境橋という橋をてくてく渡り、スペインへ。元検問所には「ここでは巡礼者にスタンプはしません」と貼り紙がありました。 The 20th day to Tui,25km. Oporiño to Redondela. We started our morning with a delicious breakfast at Pasó a Nivel Café in Poriño. Despite the heavy rain, we embraced the adventure, setting off at 10:30 am and trekking through nature until we reached our destination at 3:46 pm covering 10.2 miles. Pampered in Pamplona The snow all but disappeared. Now just a mist to enjoy whilst walking through soft trails sheltered by trees tinged with the green growth of spring. One could even describe it as pleasant walking. To top if off, we cross an ancient stone arched bridge only to be met with an angry Fiat blocking our path. Im not sure of the etiquette of a stone arch bridge, peregrinos and a Fiat. Who has the right of way? The windows of the Fiat were opened. The driver stared me down and reached into the back seat (which is virtually in the front seat of the small Fiat) and grabbed a large baguette with which to beat me. However he broke it in half, thrust it out the window shouting “Buen Camino!” His donation of half a baguette was accepted graciously. I was stunned at this simple act of generosity. I called out in my limited Spanish, adios amigo. Gracias. The remainder of the days walk is uneventul. Up down. Down up. Bridge. River. Single trails. Picturesque villages guarded by crumbling monasteries. And peregrinos. No matter how many we pass, others lie waiting ahead determined to block our chance of passing. Eventually we arrive in a large town. Taffic lights, pedestrian crossings. Ordinary people going about their daily lives only to be interrupted by the constant peregrino flow. They must get sick of responding to a cheery “Buen camino” from each of us. And at last, massive stone walls and a drawbridge announcing we had arrived in Pamplona. I was particularly excited as one of my bucket list items written in a drunken stupor several decades earlier was to run with the bulls at the San Fermin festival. Fortunately, we had arrived too early and instead ran with tourists through winding cobblestone streets adorned with awesome looking bars. Checked into our room for the night. No dorm bed as most Albergues were full. I reminded Wendy the best way to see a new city is to join a free walking tour. After 3 hard days of walking, this didn’t go down too well. My dream of running with the bulls were realised as I ducked her swinging trekking pole. Instead we dined and wined at the Cafe Iruna. An experience I’ll recount after I finish off my duck leg.
