Tag 18: Pamplona nach Bayonne oder Vive la France. Die Nacht im 4 Bett Zimmer war unruhig und bereits um 6 Uhr sind die Ersten aufgestanden. Denn dann gibt es bereits Frühstück und ab 8 Uhr müssen alle Pilger wieder draußen sein, auch wir. Es ist immer noch kalt und es geht direkt in die Pyrenäen deren Ausläufer wir heute überqueren. 35 Kilometer bergauf. Mal flacher, mal steiler, mal auf der Landstraße und mal auf einem Radweg. Aber immer nach oben. Von 450 auf über 854 Meter und dann wieder hinab. Die Landschaft ähnelt dem Allgäu und sogar die Kühe haben Glocken um. Stopp in einer typischen kleinen spanischen Bar und dort zum letzten Mal eine Tortilla gegessen. Unten angekommen zieht sich der Radweg sehr lange durch ein schmales Flusstal. Immer wieder mal fährt man durch einen Tunnel der automatisch ausgeleuchtet wird. Ein freundlicher spanischer Radler ist von unserer Tour so angetan das er uns einen tollen, flachen Weg zur französischen Grenze zeigen will. Bereitwillig folgen wir ihm in der Hoffnung einige Höhenmeter sparen zu können. Am Ende haben wir in Behobia zwar 150 Höhenmeter gespart aber wir müssen einen 15 Kilometer längeren Weg nach Bayonne in Kauf nehmen. Nicht jede gut gemeinte Hilfe ist auch wirklich eine! Michael ärgert sich sehr und die Tatsache das jetzt auch noch Gewitter für den Nachmittag angesagt sind, was seine Laune nicht wirklich verbessert. Wir kürzen daher etwas ab und erreichen im Nieselregen dann nach 130 Kilometer Bayonne. Eine in die Jahre gekommene Schönheit und vom Trubel in Pamplona hier keine Spur. Dag 3 Manzanares el Real - Las Dehesas 24 km, 1046 meter geklommen #1pelgrimoppad, rustige kamer maar vaak wakker geweest, is weer even in het ritme komen. Dikke knuffel bij het vertek gehad. Vanacht veel regen gevallen, maar vandaag af en toe wat motregen tijd met jas aan gelopen. In dorpjes wat asfalt voor de rest alles onverhard. Paar keer gestopt voor café con leche en tortilla met uitgebakken spek. Calorieën verbrand ik wel.Geen pelgrim gezien. Brandweer was nog een stuk bos aan het afbranden! Wij mogen dan geen 130 km en moeten van het gas af. Het rookte best en gelukkig ging de wind de goede kant op. Daarna heerlijke geuren van de bloemen en de mooie geluiden van de riviertjes met watervalletjes, wat kan een mens toch gelukkig zijn. Bijna alleen maar natuur die werd begraasd door runderen met erg grote hoorns, met grote koebellen was even oppassen. Nu slaap ik in een grote jeugdherberg van de provincie. Morgen de klim naar het hoogste punt van alle Camino's, rond de 1800 meter. Tag 17: Logrono nach Pamplona oder es ist zäh. Heute morgen ohne Frühstück um 7.30 Uhr gestartet. Die Wettervorhersage hat ab 11 Uhr Regen vorhergesagt und da wollten wir schon einige Kilometer hinter uns gebracht haben. Es ging gleich richtig los mit 17% Anstieg raus aus Logrono. Da war der Rijoa von gestern gleich wieder abgearbeitet. Und immer weiter auf und ab. Bergab rein ins Dorf und bergauf wieder raus. Den ganzen Tag ohne Unterlass. Rauf und runter mal 150 Meter gewonnen und dann wieder 100 Meter verloren aber insgesamt bergauf. Es ist landschaftlich schön aber sehr hügelig und irgendwann hat es mir mental den Stecker gezogen. Ich hatte bei dem Tempo das Gefühl das wir nie in Pamplona ankommen. Micha hat mich dann wieder aufgebaut und nach einem Kaffee und Tortilla ging es dann weiter in den letzten langen Anstieg nach Pamplona. Auf der Passhöhe haben wir Rainer aus Limburg getroffen. Er ist in großen Teilen durch Frankreich in umgekehrter Richtung gefahren und fährt jetzt nach Santiago. Wir rollen nach Pamplona. Übernachten werden wir heute in der Pilgerherberge Casa Paderborn. Paderborn ist die Partnerstadt von Pamplona. Das Herbergspaar empfängt uns herzlich und nach dem vorzeigen der Pilgerpässe erhalten wir einen Übernachtungsplatz im 4 Bett Zimmer mit Stockbetten für 11 Euro mit Frühstück. Wie früher in der Jugendherberge, aber viele Pilger absolvieren so den gesamten Jakobsweg. Anschließend vorbei an der Stierkampfarena in die Kathedrale zum Samstagsgottesdienst am 3 Mai, der in Spanien als Tag der Entdeckung des Kreuzes besonders gefeiert wird. Built in 1963, its sleek exterior and interior blend seamlessly with the surrounding shops and restaurants, forming the heart of Pfaeffikon's town center. Step inside, however, and fascinating remnants of the past emerge. A striking Gothic wooden cross, crafted in the 13th century, stands guard within the modern space. To the right of the altar, a beautifully wood-carved statue from the 1500s depicts Mary cradling the baby Jesus. Even the Stations of the Cross offer a unique twist. Remove the highway and swap the bright plastic ponchos for some cloaks, and you’ve got the Fellowship of the Ring on their way to Mordor. The rain and mud made our trip about as much fun as theirs. At least I get a glass of wine at the end and not Mount Doom. 🍷✔️ 🌋✖️ 4. So that’s what they do with all the orange peels that don’t go into the zumo! 🍊 5. A Capela da Magdalena. Very cool and tiny chapel that has a possible historic connection to the Knights Templar. 6. A parade of cows!! See the guy with the stick? He’s using it to keep the cows from walking out into the path of a tractor. I had no idea that cows could be trained like that! 🐂🐄🐂🐄 7. We walked down that tiny, narrow, steep, rocky, muddy, and wet path! The beer afterward was well-deserved. 🍻 8. “Fear and guilt weigh you down. Move forward lightly.” 9. Een dag van stilte en geen stilte. Wat een geluid allemaal, het tikken van de wandelstok, en het fluiten ervan. (De wind waait door de gaatjes.) Het klotsen van de waterzak, de muntjes in de portemonnee. Het schuivende grind onder mijn schoenen, best gevaarlijk soms. Het gehijg van de wandelaar. Het in m'n zelf mompelen. Laat ik eens stoppen. Helemaal niets meer te horen. Wat een stilte, bijna niets te horen. De vogels, de hagedissen en de konijnen die wegschieten. Een ruig landschap met onderweg 1 plaats voor koffie en broodje en dan weer 17 kilometer niets, ja een boerderij op kilometers afstand. Een prachtige dag. Slaap nu bij iemand thuis, dacht een handje te geven, maar dat werkt hier anders. Meteen een warme omhelzing met 2 dikke zoenen, een warm welkom. Alles uitgelegd en mijn kleren konden meteen in de machine. Camino de Finisterre Day 30 ***** We made it. Our small family of three with a baby that's 8 months old reached "the end of the world" - Finisterre. We've been on our way for a month. It's been an unforgettable month. Finisterre/ Fisterra is a magical place wherever pilgrims walking the camino have ended their journey for centuries. Typically, a pilgrim would conclude by picking up a shell on a local beach as a symbol of completed pilgrimage. This last part was not easy for us and we're really happy we are finally here. We made it in spite of feeling sick when leaving Santiago. During this last week, we had to take our first day off in Vilaserio. This stop helped us get our strength back and brought some very nice people into our way. On the way to Cee, we got completely wet when we experienced the powerful mix of rain and wind, which seems very different here at the end of the world. The experience was strong. We felt so small. And again, there was light at the end of the tunnel when a beautiful family welcomed us in their albergue. It's 16,6 km between the town of Cee and the lighthouse of Fisterra. Then another 3km to return to the town of Fisterra, so almost 20km total. Most of the way, it was rainy and windy again. But nothing compared to the day before. We were a bit sad, when we arrived to the foggy and cold Fisterra. We wished for good weather to be able to dip baby's feet in the ocean. It would only make sense that his first experience with the sea is at the end of the world. The town is nice. A bit touristy but still chill. So we decided to stay for two nights. Let's hope we'll get a window of opportunity for feet dipping in the ocean. ~ 🇩🇪 Aus Ourense heraus führt der Weg hinauf, am Bahnhof vorbei und teilt sich dann in zwei Varianten. Wir wählten die westliche mit einer Steigung bis zu 19%. Bei César wurde dann Rast gemacht. Etwas mulmig war mir zumute als wir in eine Jagd gerieten. Während wir das Gebiet schnell durchquerten, wurde mit dem Schießen glücklicherweise pausiert. Abends gab es dann noch das in Cea beliebte Pan de Cea. 🇬🇧 From Ourense, the path leads uphill past the railway station and then split into two variants. We chose the western one with a gradient of up to 19%. We then took a break at César. I felt a bit queasy when we came across a chase. Fortunately, the shooting was paused while we quickly crossed the area. Dag 1 Madrid- Tres Cantos 22 km. Vanmorgen een beetje uitgeslapen en om 8.15 vertrokken. Ik zat in een buitenwijk van Madrid. Na een half uur op de route. Diverse keren fout gelopen, markering ontbrak vaak. Maar met een goede app op de route gekomen. Wat industrie, niet zo'n mooi stuk, de Camino is net het echte leven, af en toe een minder stuk. Daarna mooie natuur, onverhard, los zand en grind. Toch maar de wandelstok gepakt. Bijna 800 meter geklommen vandaag, niet verwacht. Het was zaterdag dus veel mountainbikers. Als afsluiting met @truitje73 een menu del dia. Alleen maar locals en geen Engels sprekend personeel. Lampen gingen uit, bij Spaanse familie werd oma 81, hele restaurant zingen met kaarsjes. Camino de Santiago: Día Uno Sarria to Portomarín 14 miles / 22,5 kilometers / 36,666 steps Blister total: 1 1. Have I ever looked lovelier?? I think not. 2. Cool old church in Sarria. 3. Important words of advice as we start the Camino. 4. See how lush and green and beautiful all that is? Yeah, that’s rain. Lots and lots of rain. 🌧️ 5. More gorgeous, rain-soaked scenery. 6. Fun graffiti, in galego and español. 7. Lots of the tiny towns on the Camino have these old churches and cemeteries. They’re so pretty and really suit the landscape. 8. This is a corn crib! Apparently the design helps dry the corn cobs in this really damp environment. (Did I mention that it rains a lot here??) The cribs are awfully small, and Spaniards don’t eat a lot of corn, so we’re guessing it’s to feed the cows. 🌽 🐄 9. Anti-galego graffiti. As Rozas is written in galego, but in español, it would be Las Rozas. Note the tiny L someone etched on the sign. (Never mind, it doesn’t show up. But trust me, it’s there.) 10. Portomarín! Gravel paths led us past a protected nature area, offering a glimpse of idyllic farmland bordering the lake's tranquil moor on our right. Tag 16: Abfahrt um 8 Uhr in Burgos. Es ist kalt. Nur 2 Grad. Aber das macht uns heute nichts aus. Denn es geht die ersten 30 km nur Bergauf bis auf 1150 m und da wird es uns schon warm werden. Der Jakobsweg verläuft überwiegend gerade aus an der Nationalstraße N – 120 die Burgos mit Logrono verbindet. Die Rucksack Pilger laufen neben der Straße und wir grüßen uns mit einem herzlichen Bon Camino. Nach dem wir die Passhöhe nach knapp 2,5 Std überfahren haben geht es nur noch bergab. Km um km rollen wir angetrieben von einem kräftigen Rückenwind Richtung Logrono. Je weiter wir herunter kommen desto wärmer und auch hügeliger wird es. Überall sind Weinberge und es erinnert uns ganz stark an das Breisgau. Aber wir sind hier im Rijoa einem der größten Weinbaugebiete der Welt. Nach Rekordzeit und 120 km in Logrono am Ebro angekommen haben wir dann 21 Grad und Sonnenschein. Fast 20 Grad mehr als heute morgen. Camino de Santiago: Día Cero 1. Starting our journey on our first train. Note the sun. It’s the last time we would see it all day. 🌞 2. Our second train. Fast! It goes up to 300 km/hour! 🚊 3. A view of Ourense and its Roman Bridge over the Río Miño. The landscape got drastically different as we went from Madrid through Castilla y León and on to Galicia. 4. El Río Miño. I can’t get over how wildly variable and diverse the scenery of Spain is, from one end of the country to the other. 5. Our final stop of the day and beginning of the pilgrimage - Sarria. The town is tiny and packed with backpackers. A lot of people start in Sarria because it’s the last place you can start and still get credit. 🎒 6. Some galego for you. Spanish speakers should be able to figure this one out! (Juguetería ~ toy store) 7. First course - fabada. First time I’ve been able to serve myself, both food and wine. Potentially dangerous! 🍷 8. Second course - pescado. When in Galicia … 🐟 9. Third course - tarta de la abuela. ¡Mi favorito! 10. Haven’t done any walking yet, other than from the hotel to dinner, but the first stamp has been obtained! Tag 15: Burgos Ruhetag oder erschlagen und repariert. Den Ruhetag in Burgos nutzen wir um den Körper und den Rädern etwas Ruhe zu gönnen und kleinere Wehwehchen auszukurieren. Unser Rad in eine Radwerkstatt gebracht um es für die nächsten Wochen fit zu machen. Wir machen heute auf Kultur und schlendern bei frostigen 6 Grad durch die schöne Altstadt. Burgos hat eine lange Vergangenheit als Krönungshauptstadt der Könige von Kastillien und als Geburtsstadt des spanischen Helden El Cid der die Mauren in den Kreuzzügen besiegte. Das imposante Stadttor Arco de Santa Maria und die Kathedrale von Birgos im gothischen Stil sind die Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten. Wir machen eine Führung durch die Kathedrale und sind erschlagen! Es ist einfach unglaublaublich. Von außen stellt Sie eine Einheit dar im inneren sind immer wieder wunderschöne Kapellen aus den verschiedenen Bauepochen seit 1200 angebaut worden. Eine schöner als die andere. Dann sind wir beide zum Barbier um die Haare wieder kurz schneiden zu lassen. Nach einem Wohlfühleis bei 6 Grad zu unserem Radmonteur unseres Vertrauens zurück und unsere Räder abgeholt. Here, pilgrims encountered the Holy Trinity Chapel, a welcome sight built in 1497 by the administrator of Einsiedeln Abbey. This strategically placed chapel served as a crucial waypoint for weary travelers, offering a place for prayer and reflection just before completing their journey across the bridge. The pilgrim-friendly infrastructure extended beyond the chapel walls. Soon after its construction, the first inns began appearing in Hurden.
