Today I have been continuing with my plans to diecut and reuse as much of the printed booklets by @dundeemonthofdesign I love how random patterns appear on the fish! The thinlits cutting dies apart from the mermaid are by Sizzix (Ocean Scene 665190) The hexagons are Bigz dies by Sizzix. I was die cutting in my studio today after a visit from a machine knitting friend. I have started making the recycled EPP (English paper piecing) hexagon patchwork kits I had planned to make. I had rescued some booklets by @dundeemonthofdesign with beautiful graphics and colours that would have been put in the recycling bin. A few pages of the booklets have lovely prints on them so I have saved and trimmed those for more die cutting/cardmaking uses. This hands-on workshop includes all the materials and tools needed to make a textured silver ring in one of three styles - medium ring, wide ring, or a set of three skinny stacking rings. Unfortunately we have had to make the decision to cancel our pop-up for December. The latest restrictions mean that quite a few of our makers as well as customers won't be able to travel to Dundee to attend. We hope that we can have the pop up in the new year once restrictions are eased. We are however working on taking the market back online - like we did back in May. We are taking our Makers for Maggie's market online!!! Join us over the weekend 16/17 May 2020 on our facebook and instagram accounts when the Makers for Maggie's are showcasing their stalls online and you can shop their wonderful creations from the comfort of your living room, garden, balcony or even while having breakfast in bed! Every maker will donate at least 15% of their sales to Maggie's Dundee to support their vital work. We will also be hosting an online raffle over on justgiving between 9 and 24 May 2020 where you can fantastic prizes. All the money raised will go to Maggie's Dundee. Link to the raffle will be announced soon. Corona virus is having a big impact on people with cancer and their families and friends. They need places like Maggie's more than ever. Maggie's Dundee is still providing their vital support online and over the phone. But they need funds to keep providing this service. Please spread the word of our online market and make it a great success - for Maggie's and for our makers.
One of our newest supporters is @furionstudios, an independent designer/ maker business based in Fife. They design and handcraft unique gifts that are made from either 100% recycled materials or incorporate recycled elements. Such materials include; acrylic, wood left over from construction projects, corian and whiskey barrels. Many pieces are one of a kind due to the characteristics of the materials they work with or by the supply of what is available to them. Diana graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone School of Design, Dundee ’98 – continued to design and make gaining 22 years experience. She works predominately in silver combined with cast resin and has complete collections as well as work to commission to fulfill the desired design brief. The pieces Diana makes are affordable and very wearable; considered to be everyday elegance. Diana believes being a designer/maker is that you can continue to evolve and create new exciting ideas, she often getting taken away in her imagination to see what can be created, using different materials often sends her off on a tangent and into an exciting new world! Diana’s influences are from the natural world around us, from flora and fauna to beautiful fluid simplistic lines that lend themselves wonderfully to jewellery and wearable pieces. Sheila's designs evolve from immersing herself in making collages, sketching, photography and experimenting with a range of techniques and materials. Taking these initial ideas Sheila makes a variety of individual elements using textured sterling silver, hand patterned aluminium and semi-precious beads. These pieces are used either individually or combined with each other to create her jewellery collection. Sheila's passion for making is demonstrated in her delicate and unique, easy to wear pieces. Some lovely jewellery by @trishyoungjewellery to start off this sunny week! These are all handmade and hallmarked sterling silver jewellery with the occassional splash of colour from resin and gemstones. From a love for all things sterling silver and a belief that jewellery should be enjoyed and worn on all occasions, Trish began her journey into jewellery making many years ago. She loves to create both bespoke pieces and old favourites and particularly enjoys meeting like minded and interesting artists and customers at events and fairs.
The ideal present for pet owners: Pet portraits! Sam of @sambaxterart is a freelance, multidisciplinary artist working from her home studio in Perthshire. She produces a variety of art and crafts through drawing, painting, mixed media and photography. All of her work is inspired by the natural beauty of plants, animals, and the landscape. She produces pet and animal portraits, prints, original art, as well as mini paintings of animals on little wooden discs finished as pins, magnets, and key chains. Today's Makers for Maggie's supporter is of interest to everyone who loves bold and unique jewellery: @gennadelaneyjewellery 💍. Designing and making jewellery is Genna's passion. She has been running her award winning, jewellery design practice since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone in October 2006. Her workshop was based at WASPS Studios, Dundee but she has recently opened her own jewellery studio in Tayport. Genna is inspired by the Scottish landscape, architecture, natural rock formations and the sea. Commissions are welcome. Now for some paper craft extraordinaire: @aprilblackdesigns . After graduating in 2016, April set up a small workshop just outside of Dundee. She makes a range of wood turned vessels, jewellery with silver elements, and at the moment she mainly focuses on papercut art. Every papercut she makes is drawn then hand cut using a scalpel from quality paper. She takes inspiration primarily from the outdoors, but also enjoys creating pieces that are colourful and fun. After taking part in @funadaydundee for the first time this year she created a new collection of book inspired papercuts, followed by a collection featuring sports, both of which can be purchased currently through her Etsy shop. A big part of her work is commission based and April loves working with customers to make a special piece that is personal and meaningful for themselves or for a gift. Some gorgeous art to brighten up your day? @rosmacdonald's "Inky Works" aim is to achieve bold, punchy pieces of abstract naturalism. Ros works mainly in acrylic ink and is inspired by the beauty of her native Angus, but loves the West coast. She tries to achieve an individual approach to her work and enjoys experimenting with textures and colour reflecting the seasons. She also has a quirky fun approach to her print work that often features the seaside and her garden visitors. You can expect to find lino cuts, woodcuts along with framed original art work, original mounted art, handmade leatherbound artists books, Inky Works mugs and cards.
